Re: Breastfeeding Questions/Support/Learnings Go Here

  • Anyone using coconut oil for chapped/dry nipples? My left boob is really chapped and laniole cream isn't cutting it
Any other suggestions or recommendations would be helpful
    Tia

Express your own milk and use that. Then let it air dry before putting a shirt on. Best way to heal it.

  • Second that ^

I was using nipple butter in the beginning. As soon as I used my own bm and let them dry as often as possible in the open air they healed very quickly.
  • @grapesoda1111 my LO will be 6 weeks tomorrow. He used to always feed for 20 mins on one side but the past few weeks he has been eating 10 mins or so per side. If he doesn't stop and take his mouth away I will pull him off when he is clearly sleeping. Then I burp him which usually wakes him up and switch sides. Most of the time he eats less on the second side.

At night time I don't let him CIO for 30 mins. We are doing bed sharing and so rather than just throw my boob in his mouth I let him fuss a bit, put a pacifier in his mouth and "shush" him back to sleep. I usually repeat this a few times before I give up to nurse. That process is probably about 30 mins or so.
  • If your LO spits up after being on the 1st breast do you still give/offee the 2nd breast or just let them be? My LO spit up this morning after being burped but I waited like 5min and then gave the other breast, he latched on and ate for a while then when I burped him after he spit up again...I'm wondering if I should have just let him be after the 1st breast...

My DD was just a happy spitter. She spit up after every feed but gained weight and was happy so I always offered the other side and if she took it I fed her. Some babies just spit up a lot. If they act hungry I still feed. Luckily DS isn't a very spitty baby.
  • Can't help but feel frustrated. Not only have I not been losing weight while breastfeeding (actually have gained weight since I'm starving all the time), but now my period has returned at 7w pp! anyone else in the same disappointing boat?

I usually wait until she seems hungry to feed her again. That said, I have oversupply and usually she seems to spit up because she overate.
  • HELP!
anyone dealt with thrush? Or a yeast infection on their nipple? I found out that I have a yeast infection and the nurse told me to use clotrimazole(it's typically used for athletes foot, but was also given to me to use for LO diaper rash) and it has made my nipples so dry and more tender it's cry worthy every time something touches them; let alone BF. I have tried rubbing in BM and letting it air dry but the infection is still there. The nurse also said I could use the violet stuff used when treating thrush but I'm not sure what it is called or if anyone has had success with using it. It's getting so painful I've considered switching to formula and I really don't want to do that.

Check out this group I'm a part of on Facebook. I don't know the answer to your question but there are a lot of mamas on here... And a wonderful LC, maybe you can ask there too.

    Good luck!!
  • @rachswi I feel ya. I got my period 6 weeks pp, I was at my follow up and doctor confirmed it, I couldn't believe it! I gained 40 lbs and lost the majority but there is 10 lbs just hanging on for dear life... But I've heard some moms actually gain/maintain and won't shed it all until they are done BF. I'm starving all the time too but I've also been working out for 3 weeks. I'm EBF and 9 weeks pp. I worked out up until I delivered and was in really good shape before so it's a bit frustrating to have this stomach pooch, but then I realized there are more important things to worry about these days.

It's called gentian violent. You can use it on you and your LO. You need to treat both of you or you'll keep passing it back and forth. https://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/568561cae4b014efe0da622b?ncid=tweetlnkushpmg00000067

I would also call your pedi and ask what they recommend for your LO because they likely have it in their mouth if you have it on your nipples.
  • We have a wellness checkup on Tuesday so I'll be asking the doctor then, but in the meantime inbetween time I wanted to see if my LO is the only one experiencing this. Her poops are typically orangish seedy poops with the occasional green poop. The past couple of days it's been green and slimy. Should I be concerned? She has 8+ wet diapers a day so I know she's getting enough to eat and she doesn't seem sick or anything. Too much foremilk maybe?
  • I would try using a pumped bottle of milk for the nights and breast during the day maybe that will give you and her the rest you need good luck
  • Yes that can be a disadvantage, my lil one was in there for three days and she has a hard time finding the nipped to.latch on for feedings. I put it directly I her mouth for her to nurse
  • Yes lol I use to sleep top less as Newell but I leak at night. Hang in there, because we all need to have patience with ourselves

Please use the quote function so we know who you're talking to. None of these responses make sense.

Could be too much fore milk.
Try feeding on the same side 2 times in a row each time. Could also be a milk protein intolerance but I think that might have shown up sooner.
Kelly mom might have more ideas.
  • I am with you my lil one sleeps on top of me and will not sleep in her crib or bassinet. I have tried and she just gets up and cries until I pick her up. She is 7 weeks and this has been since day one

Hey @sameeha32 either @ message the person or use the quote function. No one knows who you are talking to in a multi question thread like this!

They checked his mouth and saw no signs of thrush or any infection. His usual pedi is out of town for the holidays but should be back soon. Thank you

  • So my LO is 4 weeks old and we are still using a nipple shield. I keep trying and trying to get him to latch without one and he won't. He is gaining and has tons of wet/dirty diapers, but I just feel discouraged especially after reading kelly mom's page on shields. My midwife said to just try without but if I can't, it's totally fine. I still can't help but feel like a failure.

Also I read a few pages back that someone's LO was refusing to latch. This happened to me several times and skin to skin works like a charm!

My doctor prescribed Diflucan and I felt immediate relief. She also gave me a prescription nipple cream. It was compounded and very expensive, but essentially looks like Vaseline and does wonders. Also, I've been sleeping in sports bra and stuffing it with cloth diaper inserts, as the disposable nipple pads are a little itchy. The added pressure from the sports bra stops chaffing and provides additional relief. Good luck!

My LO experienced the green/mucusy poops back when she was about 4wks old. It lasted for a couple days and then she went back to the more normal BF baby Dijon mustard colored poops. I called the nurse at my pediatrician and she said it was normal. My LO had no issues with it so I'm sure you're fine. May just be something you ate!

Don't feel like a failure! If the shield works for you, keep using it. My LO is 9 weeks now and we used the shield up until 6.5 weeks due to flat nipples. I just kept trying to latch without and one day he decided he didn't need it. If he or I ever got frustrated , we went back on the shield. Now he nurses great and can pull out the nipple on his own. The shield had no effects on my supply whatsoever. Do whatever works for you and baby, I've heard stories of moms using for months at a time.

  • Jumping over from Dec15 board. DD was born 12/2 so I figure if get more advice from Nov15 moms who have returned to work already. I only get 6 weeks maternity leave and start back in two weeks. I've been EBF with the exception of pumping enough for one bottle which DH uses to feed her before bed. I'm looking for advice and/or tips on transitioning to pumping. Do I need to start the process a head of time? I'd like to only have to pump every 3-4 hours during the day if possible...I have a pretty demanding job and work with all men. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you currently feeding more frequently than every 3-4 hours? If that is what you are currently doing g then it shouldn't be an issue, you will just pump instead of BF. I slowly stretched my pumping times out. I started out pumping every 3 hours once my breasts adjusted I pushed it to ever 3.5 hrs then 4. I now pump 8oz ever 4.5 hours. I would just make sure you wear pads if you don't usually until your body adjust.

I would try to pump one more time each day so you have a freezer stash when you go back to work. Having that cushion will make it less stressful.

Work my daughter, and I will do the same when I go back this time, I work a 9 hour day and would pump twice at work. I made sure to feed the baby or pump right before I left and then do the same the moment I got home. A lot of moms get a hands free pumping bra and pump on the drive to and from work to make sure they have enough milk to feed the baby or to add to the freezer stash.

Your work is required to give you time and a place to pump so do not feel uncomfortable about it. I also work with a lot of men and I'm mostly on the road pumping in cars. I have no shame! I'm feeding my kid!
This time around I'm looking into the Freemie pump attachments so I can pump with my shirt on and get more work done.
  • @ErinKimm As far as once you go back to work my LC said if your supply is good just make sure you pump or feed a total of 8 times to maintain your supply. It of course depends on how much you can pump. If your body does not respond to the pump or you find your not collecting enough you may need more.

@rachswi I lost half of my weight gain in the first few weeks PP. But I have been gaining weight for the past 2 or 3 weeks and now I'm only 7 pounds from delivery weight. I'm not sure if it's because of the holidays or the fact that my schedule is totally messed up because of sleeping so late in the morning. I have my 6 week PP appt on Wednesday so I'm hoping to get clearance to work out. I stopped bleeding 2 weeks ago and really hope that it doesn't start back up again. Maybe you are having a period?

    ETA I also EBF
  • Pedi told me to give LO vitamin D daily as a supplement since i am EBF. She said to just follow the directions on the box with measurements. However, the Enfamil one I purchased is a one size fits all babies (1 ml). LO is 6 weeks and weighed 9lb at her 1 month check up. I am concerned 1ml might be too much for her.

Anyone else giving their babies vitamin d? How much did your pedi say to give?

If I remember correctly Vit D is one that if the body gets too much it just won't use the excess and will excrete it.

See when I turned to dr google, I found that hypervitaminosis D can occur from taking too much of the supplement. But rarely occurs from too much sun and food exposure.

However if your pedi also said 1 ml, seems like that could be the standard dose.
    Thank you

I beleive 400u of vit D is the dose you need. Different formulations have different concentrations. I use a concentrate that has 400u per drop. Easy to place on my nipple once a day before feeding.

Oh that sounds way better and easier than using the syringe...maybe I'll ask my pedi about this option...currently he prescribed 1ml a day, we started this at 1 week old and LO weighed 7lbs 30z

  • Question (and I have googled but I couldn't really find anything reliable) - does anyone know of an online lactation consultant service you can chat with? I just had one question I wanted to ask them about.

That question - for those who might want to know also is - the past couple nights, my LO has been sleeping through the night (YAY -- currently 8 weeks). Last night for example, her last feeding (EBF) ended at 5:30 pm and she went to sleep at 7 pm. I feel like I should have pumped at 7:30 or so because that is when her previous feeding would have been prior to this new bedtime of 7 pm. I did not though and I woke up several times throughout the night completely engorged. I kept waiting it out thinking she would wake up at any moment in time to feed but she never did. Finally at 2:30 am, I was in so much pain, and worried that I would get clogged ducts that I pumped. Even after I pumped, my right breast didn't have much relief until she woke up at 5:30 to feed. I know your breasts regulate for longer stretches at night because mine have for 5-6 hour stretches but not 8 hours. Should I start pumping each night before I go to bed? I don't necessarily need to build a stash because I am a SAHM, and honestly pumping is not my favorite thing but if it has to be done to keep up my supply and not be uncomfortable then I will. Or will this last pump not really do anything to help build that longer stretch in the long run?

    TIA!
  • @helloaustin123 from what I understand your body will produce the milk at the times you need it to (when your baby wants to eat). You can pump at night if you want to build the stash or you can not pump and your body will regulate so you don't have as much milk in the night since your baby doesn't need it then. If you're super uncomfortable you can pump and just pump less and less for a few nights to slowly cut out the evening feeding session instead of cutting it out immediately.
