Anterior Placenta

I thought I would start this thread because I'm pretty sure that somebody will sooner or later. Today they said that my placenta was anterior. They said not to expect to feel baby until the later end of average. And the good news is that I'll have more cushioning.

Who else is in the club?

Re: Anterior Placenta

  • I was in that club with my first. I think I felt him move around 22 weeks? It actually wasn't too much on the late side, which was a relief. Something about feeling those kicks does help with the anxiety. I hope you get to feel LO on the earlier side even with the anterior placenta. It was hard for a bit seeing all those feeling baby posts especially from 14-16 weekers.

  • *confusedheadtilt* I'm constantly amazed by all of the weird crap that pregnancy entails. How does your doctor determine this? Ultrasound? Sorry, just utterly baffled by all of the pregnancy things. Either way, I'm glad to hear that it really doesn't mean anything negative for the health of the baby @BostonBaby1! :)

I found out in my NT ultrasound results. It means if I'm correct the placenta is either in front or in back (not sure which) and I was told because of it I won't feel the baby move as intense as it is and may take a lot longer to feel in general.

  • Ok I suck and totally don't remember what the medical term for the placement was. But at my ultrasound yesterday she said that it would be longer for me to feel the baby and super long till DH could feel anything. But I could have sworn she said it was on the front? Maybe I'm wrong though. Listening is hard while staring mystified at the baby.

You are in this group than! My dr said the same thing about feeling baby!

    Edit: freaking gif fix.
  • I had that with DD but I don't know yet about this pregnancy. I didn't feel DD move for a long time and my husband had to wait even longer.
  • @BostonBaby1 - I had an anterior placenta with my first and I am chubby and I still felt kicks around 22 weeks :)
  • I had one with my first (haven't had my NT scan yet this round) I didn't feel exterior kicks until about 24-25 weeks but you can feel them internally before that. One silver lining is that you won't have the creepy hand/foot imprint stick out of you like an alien because of the padding (or maybe that was me and my "extra padding").
  • So, now that I have looked online and see that there is in fact a risk for C-section and anterior placenta, I was wondering if anybody has had a C-section with one before? There's a very good chance that I will be a section. Obviously, I'm going leave it up to the doctors to make the decision and I feel comfortable with my medical professionals. Just was wondering if anybody had any personal stories?

    Sorry for hi-jacking again...

Someone I work with had a csection with an anterior placenta and the doctor was able to go underneath the placenta and pull the baby out. That's all she really mentioned to me. I guess it would be something to bring up with your dr, but I'm guessing they deal with this often enough. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks ladies. They didn't say anything about a risk today. Probably will have to wait and see exactly where the placenta is sitting but I'm sure that the doctor will say something if there might be a problem.
  • I'm anterior placenta this time and was also with ds! I felt him move around 19/20 weeks I think!
  • Lurking

I had an anterior placenta with my daughter. I felt her move around 18 weeks and my husband felt her probably around 22 weeks. I also have a little extra padding.

The only thing I was told was to let the nurse in hospital know when she was putting on the heartbeat and contraction monitors since it might be a little harder to pick up.

Also, if you wanted an elective 3D ultrasound, do it between 26 and 32 weeks before the placenta gets in the way for pictures.
  • I had C-section with DD and it didn't seem to matter that I had an anterior placenta. Everything went well and recovery was a breeze!
  • In the club! Anterior last time and just learned I have one again. I delivered vaginally but never heard of c-section risks with others I know. Movement started at 18ish weeks. No big woop.

  • Question for 2nd timers or lurkers. When they say I'll have trouble feeling it, will I still feel it internally and just wait longer to feel it externally or is it both?
    April Siggy Challenge Social Distancing

  • No experience here, but I think it's just waiting longer to feel both internally and externally.
  • @Taymiller thanks that's good to know ;)

  • On another note, a slightly positive thing about an anterior placenta, you're not supposed to feel the contractions as much as you would with a posterior placenta. That's if your contractions are in the front of course. Mine still hurt pretty bad because I was induced and I'm a big baby when I'm not in control of my pain.
  • I also have an anterior placenta. Sad I won't feel the kicks as much.

You will feel them for sure! It just takes longer to feel them externally. So you will be feeling them but your DH probably won't feel them as early as you do. But believe me third trimester you will be able to not only feel them but see them, it is crazy.
  • I had an anterior placenta with my first - while it did take longer to feel kicks, there were no other issues. I still felt very strong kicks and movement it just took longer.

  • The diagram is of an anterior placenta. Anterior placenta is the front. Posterior is the back.
  • And I have an anterior placenta again!
  • Anterior with #1 and now with #2. With #1 doctors kept saying "he is so active" at every single visit. I did feel him but not often and once I saw the size of my placenta after he was born, I could understand why. It was huge! Major cushion between me and his kicks. I have already felt this one so I am hoping it's now as cushioned because the whole kick counting stage scares the crap out of me. You never know if something is wrong or it's just that you cannot properly feel movement.
  • Another anterior placenta for me! Found out today - I don't know how I didn't realize that at my first u/s. I guess I was just so nervous!

  • Had my dr apt tonight and just wanted to give a warning. If you have a dr apt and the dr cannot find the babies heart beat right away try not to panic. The heart beat is harder to find/hear with an anterior placenta.

Just stumbled across this post today... @BostonBaby1 , I had an anterior placenta with DS and ended up with a C/S. There were absolutely no complications during the C/S as a result of the placenta placement. I was never even told that there was a potential for complications!

To everyone else, I felt flutters around 19 weeks and more kick-like kicks around 20-21 weeks. I think you can safely bet you'll feel movement by the 20 week mark!
