So, I'm having a major pity party for myself. It's been 2 weeks since I lost my grandma (she was my whole world) and now, since been home we've had to take our cat to the emergency vet for a urinary blockage. A bajillion dollars later and he's blocked again (within 5 days) despite us feeding him the vet recommended special wet food and ensuring he got plenty of water, so we're taking him to the vet again. I'm afraid we're going to have to make the really tough call to put him down and my heart is breaking all over again.
I'm so sorry, @upandbelow . I hope your kitty is ok. Be kind to yourself these days - grief is so hard, and harder when life seems to keep coming in waves with no time to catch your breath. It took me about a year to be able to think about my grandfather without crying. Not to make this about me - just to say it can take a while, so let yourself have whatever time you need.

We took balou (our cat to the vet) and he's not blocked, but his kidney function is low. The vet sent us home with some drugs to help with the recovery from the procedure that was done at the emergency vet and wants to check him again in 2 weeks. I feel a bit better because having to make that tough call over repeat blockages was motivated partially by his pain but also financially and we don't have to worry about that. The little guy is going to pull through, I'm sure of it!
@upandbelow My cat had something similar. We had to give her pain meds for her kidneys, give her soft food we then mixed with water for a few weeks, and provide moving water. We slowly cut back to soft food and eventually dry food again. She never liked the fancy fountain water dish, but she likes the dog water dish, which has a reservoir and refills as they drink. That was almost 2 years ago and she's fine!
@lovethatcolosun Hounds tongue ones, luckily! Last time we went back he got into the super spikey ones at my bil's house. This time was at my parents house. Teddy loves to rub his head on everything so they were in his ears and lips.
Wow I tried to take a media break and missed a lot! First, @upandbelow I'm so glad your kitty was not blocked again. I've only ever seen that happen one time and it was because the owner did not follow the vet's instructions. Well, I have seen cats re-block MUCH later down the line because the owners tried to not use the RX diet and the cat needed it so he eventually blocked again, but I've only ever seen it so close to the initial surgery that one time. Usually it is just pain / discomfort and related kidney issues from the initial blockage. Hopefully within a few days he'll be feeling back to his old self and his kidneys will be functioning more normally again
On a side note - I am SO glad I did not enable push notifications for the wonder weeks app. I'm much happier just living my life and thinking to myself 'he's awful cranky. I wonder if he's leaping? Oh, yup. My life sucks now'
So it turns out I'm a light weight when it comes to drinking now. Not so much in the "feeling drunk" department, but more in my ability to not feel like crap after one margarita...ONE! I woke up with a stupid headache today. Add a dusting of sleep deprivation because I went to bed at midnight and it feels like a true hangover. One more reason to feel old I guess. Lol cheers!
My fav is the part on the wonder weeks app that says "you might notice that each leap will be more intense for you too" Code for....... More awful lol @mellymar
OMG LO has been unbearable today. Won't nap, keeps yawning in my face but can't be put down. Just WHINES and whines. We're both on our last nerves. DH just took her to Home Depot in hopes she falls asleep in the car.
Can someone give me the skinny on Wonder Leap 5? Is that the special hell we are in?
@hoodoll82 I screenshot my info on the 'Relationships' leap (aka Leap #5) to share. My favorite part is on page 3, which @klkonwi alluded to, is where it says baby "is not pleased with many things" and "it is very normal that you feel exhausted at the end of this leap"
Haha "Not pleased with many things" is LO exactly! This leap has been the most interesting (read: scary) in that it feels like a true glimpse into her personality - likes, dislikes, attitude, irritability. Yay!
We're in the same boat. LO is suddenly high maintenance - fighting naps, needing constant interaction when playing, fussy in the car and MOTN waking. I never commented on the last leap because it wasn't even noticeable. With this one, she doesn't want to be left alone.
I've totally noticed the same for this leap. Not pleased with many things...definitely showing irritability and just in general being "pissed off" if she doesn't like what's going on.

Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
What the heck are leaps and where do you find them? Sorry if this makes me a special snowflake but I feel like I must have been absent that day...
Google "The Wonder Weeks". It's a theory about when major changes happen in babies. I am not as religious about its accuracy as some others here seem to be, but I can definitely tell we are in a period of change right now!
I'm not as religious about it either, but I do appreciate the explanation. That said, if I was a FTM, the Wonder Weeks would have caused me major anxiety.
This is the first leap I haven't noticed. It's coming, but for now, LO is actually happier than usual and starting to sleep better than before. I think he hit rock bottom before this leap, so... Yeah. No place to go but up?

The app is only $2 or $3 and gives you a lot of information, I find it pretty interesting. Its got enough info in it that I don't feel the need to get the book, I mean, what else could they say, except give more examples and use more words? The way I describe it to people IRL when they ask is its like a growth spurt - for their mental processes. Their brain is literally developing and their mental acumen is expanding. There were even a few leaps where it said you may need to support their head some again, because the head actually grows corresponding to the leap. I find it really interesting, in its science-y way, like right now its talking about how during this leap baby begins to learn the distance between you increases, and the concept of 'depth' - that you can have something behind another thing, or in it. I don't rely on it strictly by date ('whelp, the baby has entered the leap on the calendar, prepare myself'), but I have noticed that usually I'll have a few days of cranky baby and I'll check the app and it will say that at some point I've entered the leap (I'm really glad I don't use the notification, I think I'd rather be ignorant until I notice the change in behavior is lasting longer than normal).
My favorite thing about it is that it recommends activities you can do to help your baby advance the skills of the leap. That's pretty much what I use it for - its a succinct little list of age appropriate activities you can do that help them to learn. Sometimes I struggle being like 'what do we do today?' And I want to do 'helpful' things, so I can get ideas from there. .

Big hugs, lady xo
