Bookworms!

Since we seem to have so many readers on this BMB, we thought it'd be a good idea to start a book recommendation thread!

Post here to recommend a book (please include title, author, and genre), request new books in a genre you love, or rave about the latest book you've read!

Include your Good Reads username as well if you'd like! Mine is vvitchhazel!

  • Loading the player...
  • I pretty much read anything though not as much anymore with the kids.
I'm kind of cheap when it comes to books though so I stick to free or $.99 ones from Amazon or the the library when I get to it. I just read Still Alice by Lisa Genova. Very good!!

I read a ton of free amazon romance novels on my Kindle and most of my physical bookshelves are packed with fantasy fiction, both adult and young adult.
eta my goodreads name is the same as here: indibidule
  • Oh, man, ya'll are lucky I'm no longer working in publishing or I'd just be pushing my own authors, haha. Although if you are into geeky things, video games, and want a quick summer read, I actually really DO recommend Ernest Cline's Armada (or his first book Ready Player One if you've never read it), and not just because I used to help with his PR and he's a super nice guy, lol.
    We'd eat it up.
  • Yes! I so need this, I have been so out of the reading game, and really need a good book to get back in. Otherwise I'm going to keep re-reading books I've already read!

The exact same here! My husband makes fun of me for rereading the same books over and over again. Then I got him to read some of them and I think he's starting to understand.
  • I really love historical fiction, too! I've been a nut for it since I was younger and devoured the "Dear America" books. I actually just gave the majority of mine away to a co-worker who has a 10 year old girl who likes to read. I really focused on the Tudor period in England because Henry the 8th really fascinates me on a lot of levels.

I would recommend "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See. It made me laugh, cry and really clung to my brain afterwards. It's about your perspective on your friendships vs the perspective of your friend. It's set in nineteenth century China when they still practiced foot binding. I'm currently reading another book by her called Shanghai Girls but I'm having my usual "end of book" anxiety.
  • @KaraEpp16 the dear America books, are those the diaries of young people during different major events in American history? If so, I loved buying those from the book orders when I was a kid!
  • I was thinking last night that there should be a thread for this in our BMB. I'm almost finished wth "Leaving Time" by Jodi Picoult. It's been really good and not like her other work which I found boring as heck. But before that I read "The String Diaries" and it was awesome. If you're into creepy, suspenseful, sci-fi horror stuff go for it. You won't regret it. My favorite books are The Hunger Games series, almost anything by Stephen King, The Sign Of Seven Trilogy, And my favorite book of all time is "Where The Red Fern Grows" that I read in third grade. If anyone has any good sci-fi horror recommendations I would love to hear them!!
  • @SamAdams2006 have you ever read dean koontz? Similar style to Stephen King.
  • Can I just say that my first "grown up" book was Gerald's Game by Stephen King? I was in middle school. Filthy for a 6th grader!!! Thanks dad!!!

  • "Welcome to the world baby girl!" or "Standing in the Rainbow" By Fannie Flagg

Also, very awesome. Reminds me of my nana. Ahhhhh I love that woman.

  • @StephPegasus I am writing it down! I will peruse Amazon tonight. Woot woot. Pay day!
  • @indibidule yes I like Dean Koontz! He has some great books. And lol @vvitchhazel Geralds Game is a very "grown up" book! My mom gave me that book "Forever" by Judy Bloom when I was about 9/10 it's pretty much soft erotica for teenagers. I was like ummm mom?? She was like ohh I forgot about all those sex chapters! Pfffft
  • YAY! books!

Love anything by Paulo Coelho. Especially The Alchemist, By the River Piedra I Sat and Wept, and Eleven Minutes. All amazing!
Love Milan Kundera-my favorite ever book is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. but all his work is great!
Love anything by James Baldwin-but favorite book is If Beale Street Could Talk.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez-amazing works. Love One Years of Solitude
Junot Diaz-The Brief Wondrous LIfe of Oscar Wao
    Jonathon Safran Foer-Everything is Illuminated

    ....I have so many more!

but right now I am reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth at the recommendation of my midwife and it is great!
  • Self proclaimed bookworm here! I just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.

It's been on my To-Read list for 5-6 years and I wish I had read it sooner, because I really enjoyed it.

Love this thread! I've been looking for some new reads.
  • I read a lot of fantasy fiction, favorite series so far is by Robin Hobb, Assasin's Apprentice. The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn series both by Brandon Sanderson are awesome also.
If you like historical fiction, Ken Follett's Century Trilogy is great (quite lengthy though)
Looking forward to getting some new material from this thread!
  • A few books I've enjoyed recently:
Royal We - written by the Fug Girls, sort of royals fan fiction
A Man Called Ove - very endearing
The secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes
  • If there are any dog lovers out there reading this, I read the sweetest book this past winter. It really stayed with me and was just such a good read. "A Dog's Purpose" by W. Bruce Cameron.
  • The kingkiller chronicles by Patrick rothfuss. Fantasy. Beware: he's writing book 3 and you may have to wait until next year at least to get that one.
  • @krisdee123 I just finished "Royal We" and loved it. Very cute.
Other books I've read this summer:
Amy Poehler's "Yes Please" (She's so funny... I'm loving it. )
Paula Hawkins' "Girl on a Train" (A creepy story but so hard to put down)
Jasper Fforde's "Shades of Grey: A Novel" (NOT 50 shades. It's a dystopian society book where your value is based on what colors you can see. Interesting)
Helen Bryan's "War Brides" (A story of a few women during war and how they're connected)
Beatriz Wiliams' "A Hundred Summers" (Two women who were friends in college- one super wild the other very responsible, and how their choices shaped their lives and led them back around one another)

Sorry my summaries aren't super good. These are all good reads though!!
  • LOVE Jasper Fforde!
  • I love this thread. I'm definitely a book worm. I tend to lean towards crime/murder mystery fiction. I like when they also have some sort of love story tied in as well. I high recommend "Dark Places" by Gillian Flynn, "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins, and "The Husband's Secret" by Liane Moriarty.

  • Ahhh, So many books! So many great stories to read!

Eventually, I think it would be cool to talk about baby books/childrens books that we/our kids have read and liked.

Dan has been hunting for good copies of the Redwall series by Brian Jacques to read to our kids.

@karaepp16 Count me in for this! I love children's books even more than books written for adults. I could talk about them for days... Partially because I spend so much time reading them with my kindergartners and partially because I'm a kid at heart. :)

  • @cawalp I'm a YA fanatic, even though I'm a year and a half away from 30!

Ditto, only even closer to 30 here (about 9 months away).

@indibidule @vvitchhazel I was so scared seeing all these adult books that people were going to think I was crazy! My goodreads is tied to my facebook so I don't want to post my name but I will follow you guys right now so you know it's me :) I have a ton on my to-read and always adding more!
  • I read the Selection series last month and man, was I disappointed! I even skipped the last book entirely (set some odd years in the future with a different main character). There was a good idea in there, but it was just executed so poorly!!!
