Hi everyone, I'm typically more of a lurker than poster but I wanted to share my experience of the past couple of days. I am a FTM and was orginally due Oct 23. I was 24 wks and a few days along and so far in my pregnancy everything had been going very smoothly. I am 29 and do not have any high risk factors, I have never had complications with my blood pressure (either during my pregnancy or previously) I have been steadily gaining the recommended amount of pregnancy weight, my eating and exercise habits were normal, and I hadn't been experiencing any extreme or even uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms until this point.
Yet despite my seemingly smooth, low-risk pregnancy my husband and I found ourselves in the ER in the evening of 7/6/15 because all day I had been dealing with what I thought was a bad case of heartburn. However by early afternoon that "heartburn" was unbearable. I had searing, throbbing pain in my chest underneath my right breast and that pain had spread to my back. By the time we made it to the ER I was in tears, could barely walk, stand/sit or take anything other than a shallow breath. Needless to say I did not have heartburn, I was diagnosed with a severe case of Pre-eclampsia and the pain I had been feeling was actually my swelling liver. When I was admitted, my blood pressure was about 235/211 and I was dangerously close to having a stroke or a seizure. What is so crazy is that other than the "heartburn" pain I was feeling throughout the day, this came totally out of no where! When my OB arrived she said my case was very rare especially given my age, prior medical history, and low risk factors. I had just seen her for a normal check-in a week or so before and everything was looking fine including my blood pressure. She and the hospital could not find a specific cause for my pre-eclampsia and she said it was happening through no fault of my own.
I ended up being transferred to the hospital my OB is associated with and my symptoms were not subsiding and my blood pressure was still dangerously high. My DD was weighing small for 24 weeks and after my husband and I had a lot of consultation with my OB and the hospital staff, this morning 7/7 I was scheduled for an emergency C Section and I delivered my daughter Madison Elise at 10:39am. I haven't received exact measurements yet because she was immediately whisked away but she's a little bit under a pound and is ADORABLE. The NICU staff is pleased at her initial outlook and I've been able to be with her for a few minutes already but tomorrow I will be spending more time with her.
As for myself, my blood pressure is much lower, closer to normal and I'm feeling a lot better. I'm currently on bedrest in the hospital and baring any complications I should be able to go home in 3 days or so. For now Madison will remain in the NICU until her original due date, but I'm hoping if she does really well she can come home sooner.
I just wanted to share my story ladies, good luck with all of your pregnancies! Even though I'm no longer October I'll still be following (read- lurking, lol) all of you!
