Re: GTKY- What do you do for work?

  • I guess I should answer my own questions..

I am an insurance agent and I love what I do. It is not at all a career that I thought I would get into, but I wouldn't change it.

I am an IT tech / IT Mgr. Assistant.

Are you doing what you WANT to do?

I got my degree in Art, so the Tech world wasn't what I planned on doing. But I enjoy my workplace, and the people I work with - even if i don't always enjoy the work itself. I do Artsy things for fun now, which I think is even more enjoyable. :)

  • I'm a drug/alcohol counselor at a methadone clinic. I had my dream job at a psychiatric emergency room for four years prior, but couldn't deal with the hospital shifts any longer.

However.... I'm looking forward to the day I can quit and be a wife/mom. Once I *hopefully* have a baby soon, we've decided that we should be financially stable enough for me to stay home, at least for a little while :)

  • @lulucooks I have debated taking some cooking classes. I couldn't make it a career, but I LOVE to cook! I am a pretty decent baker, but I'd love to learn a little more so that I can experiment with things other than flour and sugar!

Do it! The thing with cooking is the worst that can happen with experimenting is you ruin a dish, and then you learn what not to do next time. Even after years of practice and working in a pretty exclusive fancy golf course, I still mess up a dish now and then. Just gotta laugh it off and remember to not do that again.

  • I am a Marketing and Graphic Arts Coordinator (ridiculously long title) for a manufacturing company. I manage the website, create product sample designs, handle photography, brochures, coordinate tradeshow booths, stuff like that.

I like my job and love where I work, but I am in sort of a rut at the moment due to my personal life. They are very understanding, though. It's amazing how good this company is to me :)

  • I work as an Agronomist which is what I got my degree in but really honestly at this moment in my life I want to be a stay at home mom whenever I finally have a precious baby!!
  • @kyleec89 ha it's a great video isn't it!! Definitely describes some school days, however just like you said I can't imagine doing anything other than teaching!

  • I'm an account manager for a local blood bank. The job is super stressful but I love knowing what I do helps people in such a rewarding way:)
  • I am a licensed attorney who writes Medicaid reimbursement contracts for a large mco. Scintillating, I know!

I would rather work at a bakery and eat icing all day!
  • I love all these GTKY threads today!

I'm a speech-language pathologist. During the school year, I work at an elementary and a k-8 building in the same district. @abpl2014 and @mommy grams kindergarteners are my favorites! This summer I took on a home health job as well working with elderly patients which is a completely different ballgame, but I kinda like the change of pace.

I'm definitely doing the only career I would consider. I truly love helping kids achieve speech and language goals and helping adults regain something they've lost. However, I'm definitely seriously considering being a SAHM after my student loans are paid off.

  • I'm a social worker at an inpatient psychiatric hospital. It's definitely not what I thought I'd be doing. I worked as a psych tech for a few years while getting my Master's in forensic counseling. At one point, I got assaulted on the job and it makes working with my intended population much more difficult. Right now, I am overworked and underpaid. But I love my coworkers and the clinical experience is great.
I'd like to get my hyper dog to get trained and certified in pet therapy and maybe do some contracting there. Counseling first responders is also an interest as well. I'll figure it out eventually!

    I'm a scientist.

I got my PhD in biochemistry/cell biology last year. Currently, I'm a postdoctoral fellow, but I realized pretty early into it that I wanted out of academia. I mean, postdocs suck -  you're working 50-70 hour weeks for $42k a year (the NIH postdoc stipend is public knowledge, I'm not getting too personal here). But I don't even want the academic career that comes after it anymore.

So I found a new job! Starting in August, I'll be working at a scientific writing and editing company. =D I'll be a "project manager" but it's a small company so everyone does a bit of everything. I'd been editing part-time for a while (yes, on top of those 60 hours a week) and I love helping other scientists publish their research. It's fairly flexible hours, some of them from home, and only 40 per week! So it'll be much more parenting-friendly.

My background is in Marine Corps Corrections, City Administration, and Paralegal work. I receive 80% disability from the VA and when my MIL passed, it was cheaper to be a SAHM to my now 14yo DS1, 10yo DS2, and 5yo DD. I love it. Our family and home life is much happier.

If I was unlimited by money or family, I'd love to study to be an Evolutionary Psychologist along the lines of David M. Buss, Gadd Saad, or Satoshi Kanazawa. Maybe work in the Kinsey Institute. ;)

Edited to add: I do pin-up to support various charities (Besties with Testies, Heels for Combat Boots, Calendars for a Kidney, Be the Match, Battling Bare, and others.) I've been published in a few magazines, calendars, and a book.
  • I'm a neonatal resuscitation nurse and a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. My work can be amazing, exciting, and stressful all at the same time. Most people in my world think that I just feed, cuddle and rock babies all night long when in reality I attend deliveries and am working hard to make sure babies come into this world healthy and happy.

If I could do anything I think I would be a Chef. I love love to cook and am pretty damn good at it. Since both jobs are hard on a family and are a hard schedule on a day to day basis (I also work night shift right now)....I will keep on helping the little ones in this world.

  • I'm a proposal specialist for a large telecomm company.  I manage their proposals to the Dept of Defense.  My job is so boring, moving up is impossible but the benefits are stellar and I work from home.  I figure a low pressure, stay at home salaried job would be perfect when adding a LO to the mix. I'll also be able to support my fiance and his career as well.

I'm a physical therapist at an inpatient rehabilitation hospital. I work with patients with stroke, brain injury, amputations, orthopedic post-op, cardiac and multi trauma. I absolutely love my job! I hope my back agrees with me several years from now.

  • I'm a social worker.  I just switched jobs a few weeks ago.  I worked in outpatient mental health for 2 years and loved it.  I switched jobs because I wasn't sure of the stability of the company I was working for.  Now I'm working as a medical social worker in a PACE center and so far I like it, it's very different from mental health.  I think the new company is going to be good for expanding our family.  They have a 100% company paid STD policy that covers maternity leave and my supervisor seems really lenient with my schedule.

  • I'm an analyst when it comes to employee benefits like retirement and welfare. My degree was in the fine arts and I slipped into this position when a temporary job turned out to be really interesting. I like what I'm doing well enough, but I'd love to work in a role that helps shape the policy rather than collecting data about how it's implemented.
  • I just want to add that reading many of these responses has me mad envious. If I could pull a "Being John Malkovich" for a short while with any of you during the work day that'd be awesome.

I would not attempt to hijack though. Scout's honor.
  • Great GTKY topic! I handle communications and social media for a large retailer. I spend my days serving as a brand spokesperson and writing/editing media materials, social media content and internal communications materials.

I pretty much love it! It definitely has stressful moments, but I love my team and I get to do two of my favorite things: write and talk!

My company and boss are pretty great, so I feel confident I can swing this gig with a couple of LOs.

That's kinda how I ended up in insurance. I have a BA in music theory and had every intention of teaching elementary music, but that didn't work out. I took a part time job filing in an insurance office and it just continued from there.

  • I'm an RN at a small hospital. I also Run cattle and coach volleyball. I'd quit the rn job and just do cows if I could though.
  • I am a Social Studies teacher for 7th and 8th grade. I love being a Social Studies teacher and I get to work in an arts integration school, which is a my dream placement. The problem is all the standardized test suck away the love of learning even in an arts integration school. We fight to keep the arts in every second since it does not fit into our test focus system. Also our funding is soo low, I pay for most of our art supplies out of my own pay check. I would love my job even more if we would get the support like other 1st world countries get, so that way I am not paying for the paint brushes or my projector for example.
