I'm an optometrist. I look at eyeballs all day long, help people see better, and manage eye diseases. I absolutely love my job! Unfortunately right now I am splitting my time between multiple jobs, but in the future I hope to own my own private practice!

Wow it's so interesting to see such a diverse group of careers! Some that I have never even heard of and sound really exciting!
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and I love my job! I love hearing people's stories and being able to assist them along their journey! Would love to be a SAHM one day!
I'm a nanny. I was a preschool teacher for years before this but then a family sort of snagged me to be their nanny and I found out it pays a little more than double what I was making and is a lot more relaxing/fun. It's nice getting to form little bonds and have one on one time with one or two kids rather than trying to deal with a room full of 17 of them! I did like my job then, but honestly I like this more.
I am an inside sales person at a large oilfield manufacturing company. Basically, I sell spare parts for Blowout Preventors (those things that keep the oil inside the drilling rig tubing instead of spilling out onto the ground in the emergency that the pressure exceeded the pipe pressure rating and it "overflowed" so to speak). I deal with rig managers/company men/ inventory guys for other large oilfield companies that do the actual drilling for oil. It's not what I imagined myself doing when I got my BA in English Lit, but it pays the bills and it isn't awful. Right now, we are changing operating systems and I was put through all the training in order to train other people in my company on how to operate in the new system, so there is a lot of room for advancement where I'm at!
I work at an electronic medical records company. It is a kind of neat blend of tech meets medicine.
I really like my job and plan to stay in this career/company but I do also foster the (pipe) dream of owning/operating a movie theater or being my own boss of a crafting related business.
I'm a full-time grad student finishing up my PhD in microbiology and immunology. I've just started job hunting and am hoping to get a scientist job with the opportunity to do some teaching. I'll probably need to do a post-doctoral fellowship as my next step.
Hi fellow Illumuniknottie! Its me, katwag!
I am a lobbyist for the banking industry. I would love to lobby for mcdonalds!
I'm a SAHM to my 4-year-old son. I used to be an editor at a company that provided all those hated standardized tests for schools. I would test out the programs before they were sent out and also look for errors in them when they were sent back. Not the most fascinating job, but it worked well with my perfectionist tendencies and I just surfed and watched movies during the slow summer season.
I'm not sure what I'll do when I go back to work. I have a degree in English and I don't want to teach, so I'll probably just temp until I find something I like, which is what I did before.
I teach 6th grade Social Studies. In Texas, that's World Cultures, and I love love love love it! I've taught several different grades/subjects, and this is by far my favorite.
There are certainly some other things I can see myself doing in my career in the future, but they would all certainly be related to education and NOT administration.
I work as a Quality Assurance Analyst at a beer brewery. Its awesome and I love it. I have a degree in biology and Im a lab rat through and through. In my job, I pretty much test beer for various parameters and make sure things are within spec. its a cool job!
I'm a cosmetologist it's my dream job! I've wanted to do it since high school but was always scared of messing up! I finally went for it & I couldn't pick anything better! Once we have a baby I will be able to work my own appointments around my family so that will be nice.
I'm also a waitress still 2 nights a week but once we have a baby that job will be gone. I live in a super touristy area & the summer months are crazy busy with lots of money so I can't pass it up.
Dream job: I would like to be a Sahm but I kind of get the best of both worlds being a cosmetologist!
I am a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I currently teach high school students mostly science classes, but I fill in for other classes that they need to graduate (I'm teaching English 10 this coming year).
I LOVE my job and my students. I have them for their 4 years, so our program becomes a bit of a family. I love my coworkers and they make the school year so much better in this "reform" that's going on. I love being a teacher, though i miss elementary school quite a bit sometimes. I can't see myself doing anything else.
I'm an English professor and it's awesome to see so many other teachers on here. Holla! I'm also a fiction author. I know that makes me sound fancy, but I'm not.
Are you doing what you WANT to do?
Sometimes I want to teach less so that I can write more. My next book is 6 months overdue... But, I also really like teaching, so sometimes I want to focus on getting tenure. On my best days, I can do it all!
Lizzie5831, it is nice to see another fellow Marine on here.
I am currently an accounts payable technician for the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. My background is Marine Corps Disbursing/Finance and I am currently pursuing my BA in Forensic Accounting.
I love my job. This is exactly what I had imagined myself doing after getting out of the military. Eventually I want to work my way up the chain and possibly work for the FBI or CIA.
I am a Chemist in an organic extraction lab. Basically I help to test water and soil samples for all types of environmental contamination.
I did not go to college, so I spent a few years post high-school as a waitress. I found this job by chance, and started entry level as a Laboratory Technician. I have been working there for 5 years now. I work extremely hard, have always had a burning desire to learn as much as I possibly could at this job. As a result, I have received two promotions from my beginning job title, despite not having a degree. Looking back, I am not doing exactly what I thought I would be doing (mostly because I had no idea what I wanted to do!) but I am very passionate about what I am doing now
I work at an Attorney's office as a legal assistant. I started out as a nanny for my boss, then her kids turned too old for a nanny so she sent me to work at her office. I like the people I work with, but I just get so bored being at a desk all day. But it pays well I am about to start my senior year in college for elementary education, and I can't wait to be a teacher and actually be interacting and having fun all day!! (hopefully)
Accounting manager for a small corporation that deals mainly in trading precious metals.
I don't love my job but I don't hate it either. I have worked at this company for a long time so I have some freedom to do what I want but am still pretty much chained to my office for 50-55 hours a week. I think I would like to be a SAHM but don't see that happening for DH and I.. at least not in the next few years. DH just finished his second degree (in aerospace engineering) and has only been working for a year so it is going to take him some time to build a resume and advance in his career.

Up until 6 months ago, I was an Area Manager for a fantastic mattress company...But I worked waaayyyy too many hours and DH did not want to relocate so far away from family for my next promotion...So I left my dream career for my true life dream of having a family. I am now a part time cashier at a hardware store in our very Small Town America area...They are just so family friendly. And it allows me the time home with my DH and our future little ones!
2nd: I am a lab aid in the medical assisting program at a local college.
3rd: I am a certified medical assistant.. I really liked working in pediatrics, giving vaccines and testing for strep all day, but when we moved everything changed. I work the phones 1-2 days a week over the summer and work at the college now.
Am I doing what I want? Sort of. I hope to be profitable enough to be self employed/WAHM after this school year. But jewelry isn't even my dream, lol. Coffee is my dream. I want to open a coffee roastery and cafe. That's my pipe dream.
Mostly I love it and love teaching, but it can also be emotionally draining. A lot of my students face really serious challenges to finishing school - they're working full time, or raising kids and/or helping their families, or have a health or immigration issues, or live on the brink of homelessness, or all of the above.
I hear people (white, upper/middle class, supposedly educated) making disparaging comments about how "some people" (read: people of color, immigrants, people in poverty) just don't value education. It makes me so mad because my students care SO much - they're good kids, with real struggles, who just want a fair chance at success. So it's hard work, and it can be heartbreaking to see some of them fall through the cracks despite all our best efforts to keep them in school, but it's also really rewarding work.
TTC #1 --- BFP #1 5/15, loss at 5 weeks --- BFP #2 12/15, loss at 4+3 --- RE testing 3/16 normal, still trying for our rainbow
I'm a neurologist and sub-specialize in epilepsy, so I legitimately get to mess with people's heads for a living. (Kidding!) It's seriously cool (if completely nerdy) stuff!
My background is in Marine Corps Corrections, City Administration, and Paralegal work. I receive 80% disability from the VA and when my MIL passed, it was cheaper to be a SAHM to my now 14yo DS1, 10yo DS2, and 5yo DD. I love it. Our family and home life is much happier.
If I was unlimited by money or family, I'd love to study to be an Evolutionary Psychologist along the lines of David M. Buss, Gadd Saad, or Satoshi Kanazawa. Maybe work in the Kinsey Institute.
Edited to add: I do pin-up to support various charities (Besties with Testies, Heels for Combat Boots, Calendars for a Kidney, Be the Match, Battling Bare, and others.) I've been published in a few magazines, calendars, and a book.
I am a Behavior Specialist. I do ABA therapy for children with Autism.
My dream job would be to be a public health analyst for the military, USAID or some other government agency or NGO. I'm currently in grad school for my MPH.

You sound interesting. What magazines/books?
I was thinking the same thing, so diverse! I have a background in performance, which I miss since I teach now. @Lizzie5831 I would love to see pics. It is so cool to see what our internet buds look like!
I started out just trying to get my name out there, then focused more on doing it to help out charities that meant a lot to me. I've also never shot anything that's racier than Maxim-rated, so no worries there. Pin-up is fun, confidence building (especially after having a few kids), and I recommend every woman try it once. There is no right or wrong body type. All are welcome. I've tapered off considerably since deciding to add to the family. I was 8wks at my last shoot for the BwT 2016 calendar.

I have a license in Cosmetology and I keep it current, but I haven't used it since 2013.
I went to the Red Cross last December to train and currently fulfill the role of a Certified Nurse's Assistant at a hospital. No matter how exhausting and frustrating it can be, I lay my head on my pillow at night knowing that I made an impact in my patients' lives; big or small and when nobody else is looking.
I've thought about going to nursing school. Just recently, I thought about adding EMT credentials so that I can work in the ER. My main priorities in life are being a wife to my DH and someday, a mother.
My identity is not in the work that I do, but I really love comforting and encouraging people.
I am a general surgeon. I love love love my job and went to school FOREVER to get here, but it is totally worth it. The best part is that DH is a SAHD to our one-year-old DD, so I get the best of both worlds

I am a Behavior Specialist. I do ABA therapy for children with Autism.
My dream job would be to be a public health analyst for the military, USAID or some other government agency or NGO. I'm currently in grad school for my MPH.
I'm getting my masters in ABA. I'm going to test for my BCBA after I graduate. Do you work in a school, therapy center, or do home bound? I'm a sped teacher now and I love it, but I'm thinking that I might like going more towards the therapy side when I finish.
I'm a clinical social worker... right now I work in child protection and consult to the direct care staff on the mental health and substance abuse needs of our families. I make recommendations regarding treatment/services and help bridge the gap between community providers and CPS staff.
I aspired to be in the position I'm in but I worry how working in child protection will impact me once I have kiddos of my own (some of the stories I hear are horrific). If I could acquire a school social work position in the district we reside in (to ensure the same vacation schedule as future LOs) I may consider leaving my current position for one a bit less stressful (I've done school social work before in a middle school setting and loved it), but it would be a pay cut for sure. If I were to do something completely different, I think I would want to be an event planner and/or photographer.
What I do: I am a lot of things at work. The short answer is project manager for a construction company, more specifically a grading and excavating company. I also do estimating for the projects---both the underground utility part and the grading part. It's hard to explain to people because it's one of those things that makes people's eyes glaze over, but for me, I could talk about storm sewer structures and permitting for days.
What I would love to do: I love my job, but I'd rather be closer to home if possible and part time. I'd also love to do something with fitness or personal training. Such a 180, but I love anything to do with nutrition and fitness. It's kind of a lifelong love. But more of a hobby than anything
I currently work as a Web Developer for a contracting company whose main clients are a travel agency hub. I basically develop websites to help rich people go on vacation. It is definitely not my dream job.
If I stay in my field I would love to work for the government again it gives me a sense of national pride, and purpose. If I were to start a new career I would want to work with a head start program with babies and toddlers, I took a lot of classes for it but needed to choose something I could make a living off of.
Once I have a child I will be quiting my job to be a SAHM, so we will see what I pick up after the hypothetical kids are in school.

I am a claims adjuster. Basically I estimate damage on smashed up cars. In theory it's a really cool job. I love my company but not thrilled with my situation at the moment (which I don't think is helping the TTC).
Dream Job: Unsure...still. My degree is in Kinesiology and would love to do something in that field, but afraid I'm too far removed. But who knows where life takes us.

I teach second grade in a self-contained classroom, meaning I teach is all. I have always wanted to be a teacher and after three years in second grade, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite grade.
I love teaching and always have, but I would love to be a sahm.
Currently? I work providing tech support. I may not have a degree yet, but that's because I'm so indecisive. If there could be a degree in just learning, I would take it in a heartbeat. At one point, I've been a double major in psychology and creative writing. I've also been a social work major, an early education major, and a business major. My last job, I entered claims for insurance companies. I liked learning about the way businesses work, especially the insurance field, but it wasn't personal enough for me. I think I may stick with my social work major and work on getting certified in ASL.
Dream job? Child psychologist in the mental health field and developmental disabilities. I also considered being a social worker in the children services system, but when I worked in daycare the cases I saw scarred me. I've been told I'm too much of an emotional person and would not be able to deal with it.

If I were to start a new career I would want to work with a head start program with babies and toddlers, I took a lot of classes for it but needed to choose something I could make a living off of.
Once I have a child I will be quiting my job to be a SAHM, so we will see what I pick up after the hypothetical kids are in school.

This thread is great!
I teach second grade in a self-contained classroom, meaning I teach is all. I have always wanted to be a teacher and after three years in second grade, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite grade.
I love teaching and always have, but I would love to be a sahm.
