If your child(ren) have asthma...

My DD has been doing this lately and I'm a bit concerned that she may have mild asthma.  (A lot of people in DH's family have asthma, including his brother).  Today, her allergies have been bothering her.  Instead of sneezing, she's been coughing.  Before she coughs, she takes a loud gasping breath nearly every time.  I used to think she was being silly, but it is obvious that she is not.  She doesn't seem to have any other difficulty with breathing, but I am still a bit concerned.

I have pretty bad allergies, but I don't do anything like that.

  • I am answering from my own experience and knowledge of what my best friends daughter asthma is like.  I know that when my asthma is starting to act up I do cough a bit. It does happen when I am short of breath also not just in a full blown attack.  And my best friends daughter does some coughing to when her asthma is acting up.  Not sure if this helps but good luck

  • This is dd to a t!  She got the dx in Feb. after months of coughing episodes.  I'd send her to school and she was fine, a few hours into the day and they were calling saying she's coughing so hard.  This went on and on and she'd have these spells with no other symptoms.  She's active and amazingly it doesn't act up when she is at gymnastics.  I also had a very serious attack a few weeks back after my pnuemonia and it started with coughing and then wheezing and then I couldn't get air in.  But it kids, cough is common for asthma.
