  • Question:
I never know what order to operate in when LO needs a diaper change and also feeding. He only cries when he needs one or the other, and if it's simultaneous, I don't know what to prioritize. I've been changing then feeding, but he takes his hangriness out on my nipples!

Also, if he's just been fed and fallen asleep, but now needs a diaper change, it's important that I do it, even if it wakes him and starts the cycle again, right? I know he shouldn't sit in a dirty diaper, but he gets so mad on the changing table, it's hard not to just let him be...

This stuff is so basic. How do I not know this?! TIA.

  • Newborn photographer came out today & she was fabulous! While she was here I had to feed LO a couple times to keep her content & sleepy. I fed her at one point on a nipple that was cracked & dry (kind of a scab on it) & when we went to resume the pictures, LO spit up breast milk & blood on the photographer & one of her white wraps. I was terrified & mortified. Turns out it was from my dry, cracked nipple. (& the photographer was super sweet about it-saying she works with babies & has one, this is all normal for her!).
So after that, I was terrified to nurse on that side for the rest of the day. I did some research though & pumped at dinner to relieve some milk & then kept putting breast milk on it & letting it air dry. First nighttime feeding, we used that side & she nursed & slept like a champ! Yes!!!
Anyone had LO spit up some BM mixed with blood from nip? Poor DH almost ran us to the hospital he was so worried at first.

Not quite the same, but I did some googling about this as my LO was spitting up blood and amniotic fluid after birth (turns out it was my blood - major ick!). Apparently it's not uncommon for babies to spit up blood from cracked nipples. So try not to worry as long as it's a small amount, not all the time and LO is otherwise well.

Don't worry. It takes some time to find a certain rhythm to things and it depends on the baby.

For me I usually feed then change because if I change then feed, I'd have to change him again. I hope that made sense.

If the baby falls asleep and needs a diaper change I try to do it without waking him up. What usually happens though is that he'll be extra fussy if I don't change him so he won't fall asleep. He doesn't like it when his diaper is dirty. Unlike my first who didn't mind a dirty diaper. With him I would sometimes just let him be if he falls asleep and I'm too tired. I would just change him as soon as he'd wake up.

Edited because my grammar sucks late at night when I should be sleeping.

@taunyabruton I had a crazy healthy pregnancy. Literally had sugar like 3 times other then fruit or honey, exercised, are balanced organic, varied foods. My guy went breech too... But it wasn't caught with my homebirth. It turned out ok but his head got stuck on way out and he had to be given some oxygen. He basically was wrenched out, Chiro is good but something to think of with your c-section. Without it, bad things could have happened to your baby. My little guy was 3,weeks early, had a tongue tie... Again I was so healthy, found out ties are on DH side of family. These things just happen. I can't BF right now and having to supplement donor milk from people not as healthy as me and not eating as nutrient dense food. Breaks my heart. This probably won't make you feel better but wanted you to know you are not alone. I did read that back in the day people even had a good cow on good pasture ready to go if the women couldn't feed a baby. I saw some antique breast shields too.this is all just part of life.
  • @virginiaunicorn11 I always go with the feeding first. They can sit in a dirty diaper for a little bit. Especially disposable diapers nowadays are so absorbent that it really isn't even an issue..my pedi was like remember you don't have to wipe them if it's pee. Also they said -- would you randomly wake up and change their diaper in the middle of the night if they were sleeping? No..then just let it be. Harder advice to follow but anything not to wake LO up further works for me.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

I always change and then feed. All I know is that I would feel terrible sitting in my own poop! If I tried to change her after food, I'd never see her asleep. She haaaates being changed.
  • Last night LO was grunting and making so much noise in his sleep I literally could not sleep because he was sooo loud! I don't know what it is, if he's gassy or uncomfortable. He's doesn't seem to be awake when he's doing it which is even more confusing. Has anyone else experienced this?

I do changing then feeding too. Because usually by the time we are done with feeding he has another dirty diaper. He is usually "hangry" by the time he gets to feeding, but after already having diaper rash I would rather change before feed.

I've found a way to make changing time less irritable for my little guy is to sing to him; he doesn't get as mad when this happens. He loves Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I see the Moon. I also use a white noise app to help him calm/ get back to sleep if I need to wAke him to change him during a sleep cycle.

LO grunts at night... Anyone else experience this? Pediatrician said as long as she is latching and eating it's not a problem... Last night she kept me up from all the grunting!

My LO grunts unless I'm holding him. DD grunted so much we called her grunt fish (bubble guppies has grump fish). He only does it at night though. He can sleep fine all day in his sleeper but it's not as comfortable at night..? I'm guessing it's because at night everything is still, dark, and quite like when we were pregnant LOs would be active at bed time because our movement rocked them to sleep during the day.

My LO tends to fall asleep while nursing and I have to wake him to finish. Also nursing inevitably triggers a dirty nappy. So I feed him towards the end, but it often wakes him enough for a second round of feeding.
  • @devyns2nd @virginiaunicorn11 RE no burping - my guess is it depends on the baby. When I breastfeed LO I hardly ever burp her and she usually does fine. Even when I bottle feed her breastmilk she rarely needs it. But if she started vomiting it up after feedings I'd definitely burp her more.

LO is finally starting to wake up - she had been sleeping ALL DAY every day; I'd actually have to wake her up every four hours to get her to eat! Now she's starting to be more alert, but morning is definitely still her sleepy time. Still doing well with sleeping at night, she only wakes up when she needs to eat or have her diaper changed.

Her umbilical cord stump is still hanging in there at 2w4d... I'm really hoping it falls off soon!

Mine I need to change him before feeding otherwise he is incredibly fussy and have a hard time starting the feeding.
  • My baby grunts too. We moved her to her nursery already because it's too loud for us to sleep with her. She also snores! When I'm on phone calls people can hear her.

If push comes to shove, I feed her then change her. Because she always pees when she eats (you can feel it... Ewww). But typically I change her, feed her, then change her again. I'm going through so many diapers!!

It's day 3 by myself with her today. She's more alert than ever, it's starting to be fun and rewarding. Although I'd really like to shower today and she won't stay asleep unless she's on me for some reason. I'd also like to eat but put it this way, I ended up chugging a lukewarm coffee this morning. Where has the day gone!
  • So I think my housekeepers stole LO's SS card.... It's nowhere to be found. We even went through all of the trash because I did accidentally throw away DH's wedding ring a couple of months ago. I know I'm sleep deprived but I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything with it :((

I have the bouncy seat in the bathroom for showering.
  • If my twins are sleeping and I want a shower, there is no way in hell I'm waking two newborns to move them. They stay in their pack and play or bassinets. Our house is split level though, so everything is on the upper level meaning if they're crying I can hear them from the shower

Wait no burping?! I was told to burp for up to 5 minutes!

Totally depends on baby I guess.. A lot won't burp because it's digested so quickly
  • I have a video monitor and it makes showering soooo much easier.
  • Thanks so much for all these helpful responses!! And who said no wipes if it's just pee?! Mind. Blown.!!

LO had a few very small patches of diaper rash, which is why I asked. Used coconut oil (butter? The kind that melts) on it and cleared it right up. Have been rinsing his butt in the sink if he's too poopy.

  • So the last two days LO has been super fussy after BF and I burp her and keep her upright for 20-30 minutes and she still manages to spit up. And a lot! She's been so fussy today idk what to do. She won't stop crying unless I hold her. I just hope this doesn't last long or it's not reflux or something bigger
  • @virginiaunicorn11 pedi said pee is sterile so don't wipe. I didn't anyway but I was happy to be validated.

I called the doc today and they said this peaks at 4 weeks or so. Hoping ours gets better too!

Rash might go away as you stop wiping for pee. I forgot this 2nd time around and wiped several pees before getting a little rash and remembering. Stopped wiping, rash gone.

Oh really?! Thanks for putting my mind at ease!

  • For various reason, I had to take my baby to a new pediatrician that I didn't choose for his well baby check. The one you go to 2 days post discharge. He told me some crazy mess that I don't agree with.

    I'm EBF.

Born Monday at 6 lbs 11 oz.
Discharged Wednesday at 6 lbs 6 oz.
Well Check Friday at 6 lbs 7 oz.

He told me that he wasn't gaining enough with just my breast milk and sent me home with two cans of formula and told me to start supplementing.

Um what? It's not even been a week yet. Isn't he jumping the gun? He's other wise healthy. Producing enough wet/dirty diapers...

  • @dancegurl1118 @klkonwi @teather5

Thanks. My report from him listed "Seen for: failure to thrive". I was angry.

It freaked my husband out. But I think mommy knows best in this situation.
  • You should show him a textbook. It will literally say 8-10 percent in the first week.......
  • Ugh. So I thought after I survived the first poop post partum (mine not LO's) I'd be okay. Just realized today that my pain meds are causing constipation. So the stool softeners I'm taking are pretty much canceled out. So much pressure & gas - I sent DH to Winn Dixie to get prune juice & benefiber!

Yep your doc is insane. Our doc said up to 10% loss ok. We only supplemented bc we were at 15% (turns out I had no milk!) You are fine!
