  • 72 hours since giving birth, and my milk has come in with a vengeance. Problem is, I have a little barracuda for a baby and my nipples are already so sore that I haven't been able to tolerate him feeding tonight. I'm hand expressing and syringe feeding - he's getting plenty of food but I'm not sure if I should be expressing more to ease the engorgement or whether that will just feed back to making more. I'll have a midwife coming tomorrow so I can get some advice from her.

On better news, got home from the hospital a few hours ago. I had a bit of a rough time after birth - had a big postpartum haemorrhage and wound up needing a transfusion. I didn't realise how bad I felt until I got the transfusion and started feeling better - it was rough enough trying to care for a newborn on your own when you haven't slept for days, but then to add in dizziness and palpitations every time you stand up really really sucks. So I'm home and can split work with DH - I'm so happy!

I'm glad they found your hemorrhage early! Mine was 1 week post partum and it explained why I had been feeling so poorly. I was able to avoid a transfusion. I'm glad you are on the mend!
  • LO had his tongue and lip revisions on Thursday.. It went really well and he had like no discomfort. Phew! Unfortunately he still is not latching. Was advised to keep working on it and he'd get it but it is so frustrating. He's living on the little bit I pump and donor milk right now from a syringe. Looks like will go to a shield next to see if it helps
  • Anyone else have an extremely stuffy nose/congested baby? We've tried humidifier, saline spray and an aspirator. I'll call the pediatrican on Monday. Their noses are not runny or having discharge they just sound terrible :( Google says it can be normal but still hate seeing them like this. Anyone else find luck with relief?

So proud of my little girl. She's only 4 days old and slept from 11PM to 930AM this morning with only waking up once at 230 and fell back asleep immediately. She wasn't even crying this morning when she woke up, just sighing and grunting/whining a bit. I seriously couldn't ask for a better baby :x DH just went to work so me and LO are cuddled in bed watching Orange is the New Black! Girls day for the win :D

That's awesome! I get excited when they sleep for 4 hours at night! :)
  • @jjvanwagner25 what always works best for my LO's congestion is sitting in a closed bathroom with the shower running as hot as possible. The steam (essentially a sauna) loosens it up. We then use either just the aspirator or saline drops and the aspirator. We use the nose Frieda first but it doesn't work well for my LO for boogers in her nose so we finish with the bulb suction from the hospital.
  • @knwilliams01 thanks! Good to know. I was worried about the formula I've been giving too causing it. We've been using the similac supplementation for breastfeeding. Damn Google always makes you worry!

Just had a very unsuccessful bottle experience.... Baby only wants the breast. What nipples/ bottles have been successful for breast fed babies ? Currently tried Medela which DS accepted with no issues.

Hi, I just thought I would let you know that our pediatrician said newborns are too small to let them sleep through the night. Apparently if they don't wake up we are supposed to get them up to feed every two - three hours (which sucks!). Anyway, I just thought I should pass that along so you can do your own research and make the best decision for you and your LO. : )
My pediatrician said 4 hours at night but yeah, we were told it's too early for sleeping through the WHOLE night just yet. However, a few days ago, DH slept through LO's 4AM feeding (we were bottle feeding and that one was his turn to wake up and feed her). So she didn't eat from 2AM-9AM. I called the pediatrician in a panic and was told by a nurse that as long as LO wasn't expressing that she was hungry by crying and it doesn't become a regular thing there's no harm done, she just might clusterfeed that day, which she did. So I guess moral is, aim for every 4 hours but don't beat yourself up if LO goes a bit longer.

Also, when this happened, LO had already passed her birth weight, which may make a difference.

We're using the Medela Calma and every so often we'll use the nipples we got from the hospital. My LO doesn't seem very picky as far as breast vs bottle. However I do prefer the medela Calma since it's supposed to mimic breastfeeding. It's pricey though but I thought it was worth it.
  • Anyone else regret circumcision? Every time I see it I want to cry. I can tell it hurts him when I touch it :((

I'm the opposite! My husband was really set on him not being circumcised (the Huns is from Ireland where circumcision is like unheard of). Now I'm starting to wish we had done it :/

How many days has it been since the circ? The first day it looked terrible but after a few days it was much better.

We're on day four and it's still raw and leaking yellow stuff on a gauze. I keep it clean and dry but it seems like it's not healing. I thought that was normal :( I had a girl so I'm out of my element. I'm probably going to call the Dr.

I meant to reply earlier but I had to tend to the baby and almost forgot! Anyway, with DS1 I totally felt the same way. There were a couple nights when he was just inconsolable. It did go away after a few days but if things don't seem right go ahead and call the dr.
  • Totally had a meltdown today and started crying in the car on the way home from a family event. I'm just so dang tired I can't stand it. We're breast feeding so it's all on me for feeding and it's so exhausting. I'm just ready to give up. Just got my pump in the mail today but I've heard to continue to breast feed up until 1-2 weeks before having to go back to work. I'm also just so confused about breast feeding and pumping. And maybe thinking just pumping exclusively? Idk I'm at a total loss. The bad part is baby is perfect in every way. We got induced a month early and she came
Out 4 lbs 11 oz and we didn't have to stay in nicu or any other problems at all so I should be so grateful but I just miss sleep. When does this all get better?! She goes 2.5 -3 hours between feedings. Which is great at almost 2 weeks I'm just not in the right mindset

So it seemed that my period had returned yesterday - there was a lot of blood in the afternoon and night. Then today it was gone. So weird, was that a one day cycle, is that how out-of-whack my body is after nine months?

DH has really spoiled me and I haven't yet had to take DS anywhere on my own. But I really want to get some errands done in the next couple weeks. I've been unsuccessful at pumping so far and really need to dedicate some time to getting it to work, as that will make it much easier for me to either be out on my own, or to leave DS with family.

I totally feel you! Some days it seems like my life revolves around breastfeeding. Since you have your pump maybe you could try having someone give your LO a bottle so you could give yourself a break? Just don't go through long periods without pumping or nursing.

I know you're confused about pumping but what is it exactly? Maybe you could call your local la leche league or a lactation consultant and they could help.

You could also try checking out kellymom.com for all things breastfeeding and https://www.workandpump.com for pumping tips when you go back to work.

Things do get better but I can't tell you exactly when. With DS1 it took a long while for me to get a good handle on things. Don't be too hard on yourself being a new mom takes time.

My app that keeps track of breast feeding has let me know that I breastfeed for about 5 hours a day. That's ridiculous. It's really hard but everyone I talk to says after 2 weeks it gets so much easier...and then it's the best thing they did. I am exhausted. Ok off to bed because my body will wake me up in 2 hours telling me to feed her. Keep up the hard work to all you BF and pumping mamas...it's such a hard job but you are doing great.

I found that breast feeding was good after about 3 months... Then feedings were a breeze... I also supplemented with formula at that point with DS so I wasn't stressing about feeding or pumping but actually enjoyed breastfeeding (probably about 5-6 times per day instead of 12+)

I am freaking out that she won't take a bottle of pumped milk because I am not comfortable breast feeding in public and I also would like other people to be able to feed her! I hope a different bottle works!

My LO tried both Avent and Mam. She LOVES the Mam bottles and pacifiers and won't take anything else. The Avent gave her awful gas (even though people rave about how great the air-releasing nipples are). I was lucky enough to never once have an issue switching to bottles. She was only 4 days old though, and I did always use a nipple shield. Long story short, Mam hasn't failed me yet.

All of these BF relationships really make me feel like all the "challenges" we are experiencing over here are normal and for that, I'm thankful. We are just over 3 weeks in and still using the shield per LC instruction after a handful of other issues we have overcome. Weening off the shield is the next battle and I'm scared to start the struggles all over again- but I guess I better suck it up. We left the house for the first time today (besides the 5 pedi appointments and 3 trips to the LC). I kinda feel panicked every time about needing to nurse and am going to start pumping and bringing a bottle and just not going too long. I have no idea how I'd nurse in public- it's hard at home! I've gotta learn to baby wear too bc that carrier is so dang heavy and I would consider myself really strong and baby is under 7 lbs!

So random question- how does everyone feel about using a car seat canopy? I'm in south Texas and feel like baby is gonna suffocate in there so I leave it open but then all the strangers want to look at babe and talk about him to me and whatnot. Thoughts?
  • kkdb14kkdb14 member
@teather5 I use a "canopy" (it's a minky blanket) anyway. It was 95 out today. She's not outside long enough for her to feel suffocated IMO, but if you're uncomfortable with it, just find a way to wrap up conversation. I leave her uncovered inside, and when people comment, I usually answer in one sentence and when they answer with the inevitable "awww" I just say "yeah", smile, and continue on my merry way. Maybe that's rude, but if I stopped to chat with everyone who commented, I'd be out for hours.
  • Yeah we're using a nipple shield too and am afraid to start getting away from it. I do want to start pumping though. I think I'll try tomorrow. I've read to do it right away in the AM then before or after feedings? Is that right??

I've found that I get the most milk in the morning, probably because I avoid pumping after midnight. If you're going to pump around your feeding schedule, I'd pump after feedings. Again, this is just based on my limited experience, you may find that something else works better for you. Good luck! :)

Our hospital told us to keep white Vaseline on the circ at all times to keep it moist. With every change, we load up the area with a soft serve style pile of vasoline. No cleaning except bath and a damp towel (no wipes!)
  • Making our way through this second week and DH happens to be on call. He had to work last night from 8-2am and just left again tonight. I had my DD last night but she's at my MIL's tonight. I feel totally alone and nervous to be by myself in this storm. Thinking about a tornado plan with a newborn freaks me out! We'll definitely be co-sleeping tonight.
