The hospital sent us home with 60ml bottles and nipples. The nipples fit the medela bottles for pumping. Maybe check with lactation at your hospital? Otherwise, we use Avent, #1 nipple. Our little one does just fine!
I bought the anti colic tommy tippee bottles. My friends use them....... They love them. Obviously FTM here so we will see. @ElRuby I've heard from some friends the medela regular bottles they feel give their kiddos gas..... If your first baby tolerated them though! Who knows.
We are on day 4 of baby not pooping. The pediatrician checked her out and she's still gaining weight, so he's not too worried. He'll do something about it on Monday if it still hasn't happened. I'm very afraid for when she finally poops though. Apparently I went a week without pooping when I was a baby, and my mom said when I started, I didn't stop for a half hour. Not looking forward to that.
I did call my pediatrician first thing this morning cause I was also worried about LO sleeping for 7 hours straight but she said she isn't concerned at all because 1) when we left the hospital she had only lost 1 oz from her birth weight! And 2) she's been consistently eating 50-70mL every feeding. Her first bottle she downed an ounce and a half like nobody's business and my pediatrician's goal is 1oz every 3-4 hours. When LO woke up at 230 she ate 2.5 oz and fell right back asleep. Pediatrician said it is fine as long as she keeps up her eating and isn't waking up like she is starving! She also said it was probably just a fluke because LO was probably exhausted after the first full day at home and adjusting and whatnot. Which is what I was thinking also. I was extremely excited about the sleep last night since my pediatrician wasn't concerned. But thank you for the advice ladies!!
My app that keeps track of breast feeding has let me know that I breastfeed for about 5 hours a day. That's ridiculous. It's really hard but everyone I talk to says after 2 weeks it gets so much easier...and then it's the best thing they did. I am exhausted. Ok off to bed because my body will wake me up in 2 hours telling me to feed her. Keep up the hard work to all you BF and pumping mamas...it's such a hard job but you are doing great.
I calculated that if feeding for the recommended 8-12 times a day for an average of 40 minutes, then 5 to 8 hours is going to be how much time your spending. My DS has been about 6-7 hours.

@ElRuby we love the Dr. Browns bottles. When we first came home we were using the bottles for the medela pump and the nipples from the hospital. As soon as we switched to our DB bottles, her spit up decreases and she actually took the bottle faster (in 20-30 minutes). The extra pieces are a pain, but the decreases spit up is totally worth it!
My husband and I had our first night out together since March (when I was hospitalized) - one of my good friends and her DH babysat for us. I thought I would be a total wreck but I actually really enjoyed myself. I needed it for my sanity more than I realized.

So proud of my little girl. She's only 4 days old and slept from 11PM to 930AM this morning with only waking up once at 230 and fell back asleep immediately. She wasn't even crying this morning when she woke up, just sighing and grunting/whining a bit. I seriously couldn't ask for a better baby :x DH just went to work so me and LO are cuddled in bed watching Orange is the New Black! Girls day for the win
You really should be waking your LO at this stage to eat every 2-3 if breast fed, or every 3-4 if formula fed.. Talk with your peds for confirmation
Anyone have experience with switching formulas? I'm exclusively pumping, but occasionally have to supplement. We've been using similac advance since being in the hospital, but we received a huge box of enfamil samples in the mail that I would hate to waste. I'm just not sure if it'll distress the babies or not and whether it's worth it?

Experienced our first projectile spit up last night. OMG!!!!
Pretty good night... It seems my best chance for sleep is from 4 to 7... The first half of the night is a total toss up.
I did get her to take a pacifier last night but I was holding her against my chest... I am hoping she will get it soon...
Thanks for bottle advice... I think I will buy a Dr. Brown's as well as the tommee tippee one... It literally killed me when I had to throw pumped milk away!

We used enfamil ready to feed in the hospital (supplementing with BF) and when that ran out we used Similac powder that we received in the mail as a free sample. Then my ob's office gave us a bunch more powder samples, I think enfamil powder. We're going to switch again after the Similac runs out.
I'd say the first feeding or two after the switch was a little slower. Might have been coincidence. But now they are doing just fine with it.
Anyone else's DD's breasts get SUPER swollen? I know swelling is due to hormones but they are huge and hard (almost comically) and I can't imagine that feels good (just thinking about my own). I have a doctors appt Tuesday so not freaking out just wondering if anyone had similar experiences

OMG! I freaked the first time I saw that.
Yesterday the LO spit up on me while he was nursing. Then he licked his lips and ate the leftover spit up that was on there. So gross!!!
Ok so I know I've mentioned my LO spitting up a few times. I talked about it with his pediatrician. She says it could be the food I'm eating so I should avoid anything that could give me gas or food that's too spicy. She also said that I may have too much milk and to just feed him from one breast for each feeding.
So I stopped eating raw veggies and am trying to cut back on dairy. I even have him sit up for a little bit after a feeding.
...but sometimes he spits up A LOT. Is there anything else I should try?
If my MIL tells me I'm over feeding my breastfed baby one more time, I'm going to scream. She refuses to use a burp cloth (except to cover the spit up that gets onto the floor, grrrrr) and so when LO pukes on her, she says all these passive aggressive things like, "So... You don't think you're over feeding him?" And then 5 minutes later, "Maybe he's eating too much, do you think?"
No, lady. I think he's a breastfed baby. And he spits up sometimes. And if you'd use the F'ing burp cloth like I've told you 5x, it wouldn't bother you so much.
She's also posting pics on FB of me holding LO, in my PJs first thing in the morning. DH asked her to stop, and she got defensive and explained why that shouldn't bother me. Then said, "Fine. I just won't post anything unless I get your approval, I guess." How hard is it to understand the difference between a sleeping baby photo and a post-partum sleep-deprived mama photo?!
Fortunately my mother and DH are here and being saintly. I'm probably projecting all my anxieties and frustrations onto MIL. I do really like her, normally...
Hi ladies I'm struggling with loads of spit up too. I'm doing formula and worry I am overfeeding LO but she's making all the hunger signs, so not sure what else to do besides burp her often and cross my fingers. Sigh.
She's chugging the formula too despite our best efforts. The slow flow Medela nipples help, but we are moving to dr brown today to see if that helps. I swear this child acts like we don't feed her every 2 hours ... Or even 90 minutes sometimes! I wonder if she's in a growth spurt. I read that can happen in week 2?

Ugh that sucks! I have the opposite problem... Everyone keeps saying how hungry my baby is "are you sure you're feeding her enough?"... I am about to lose it... I want to scream that breastfed babies eat more frequently than formula babies.... I also hate that everyone assumes she is starving when she is fussy... Would they be suggesting formula all day if she was formula fed?! Or the one that gets me so mad is when she opens her mouth and someone assumes she is trying to nurse from them!!! Ugh I have no patience .. I already warned DH about his mother's comments and my lack of care of offending her this time around!
Oh and for anyone still looking for a swing... I can't say enough about the Fisher price snug a puppy (other animals to choose from)... She loves it and it is so helpful for daytime rest and when I need to get stuff done!!

It sounds like no matter the feeding style - bf'ing, formula or pumping, we are all hearing unsolicited advice!!! Hang in there everyone. Stabby...

Yes. Stabby. And I just cried, telling my mom how much I love her and how glad I am she's here. Apparently I'm a little more hormonal than I'd like to believe.
Frequent baby spit up is hard. It really makes you question how you're feeding the kid. Big hugs, I bet we are all doing fine and just need sleep!
Is it bad that I read through this thread and I have a huge sense of relief that I'm not crazy??
My baby has had major gas problems. He screams in pain and it is just awful. We've started using gripe water and when he gets a bottle, the Dr. Browns ones are the only ones we use. These things together help, but I feel like he swallows so much air when he is on the boob! Anyone else have boob gas issues?
Also, where the heck is everyone's kid sleeping?? This little dude is three weeks and a couple of days and I cannot get him to sleep anywhere but next to me! It's driving me crazy because I'm scared I'm going to roll over on him so I just don't sleep. We've tried the in bed bassinet thing and the crib to no avail. I am pretty bad at swaddling but is that really the reason for this?? We've tried the sleep sack, too. There must be a better, safer answer to this! I love the cuddles, but I want him to be safe.
Also, on the mother in law craziness note, mine has told me he needs to sleep in the crib all night and he needs to cry it out. He's only three weeks old! She also told me my husband will be sleeping on the couch starting tonight because he goes back to work tomorrow and needs eight hours. Really?? All I ever asked was for a quick diaper change in the night anyways. I love my in laws but it's time for bye bye time. There is no hope for any sort of routine in our near future. Ugh.
I'm not sure if it helps with spit up but I've been reading up on "paced bottle feeding" to mimic the breast when I use the bottle. Maybe using this approach could decrease spit up? Worth a shot...
Oh and for anyone still looking for a swing... I can't say enough about the Fisher price snug a puppy (other animals to choose from)... She loves it and it is so helpful for daytime rest and when I need to get stuff done!!
We have the monkey one and our motor is all screwed up so they are sending us another one. I was so upset because LO loves it
@teather5 paced bottle feeding is definitely the way to go. So many people say "oh LO sucked down 7558 ounces! Must've been starving!" But really it's just coming so fast that they instinctively suck it down.

Has anyone had any luck healing their cracked nipples? My Dr gave me a medicated nipple cream that takes the pain away but I don't see any healing happening. I've used it for a solid week now.
I've had two friends tell me to quit using it and just use breastmilk. I'm hesitant because it hurts ten times worse when they dry out. Wondering if I should just suck it up.

Does anyone have a good reference or webpage on paced feeding? (Otherwise I'll just google of course). Right now I feed LO a third of a bottle at a time and burp her and make her wait in between so that it's not just reflex for her to chug the whole bottle.
@hoodoll82 the LC said to start with the bottle in LOs mouth but tipped down and let them suck a little with nothing coming out. Then tip it almost straight (perpendicular to their mouth) for about 5 sucks and let them rest for a few seconds, then do it again. If you think about them breastfeeding and it taking 15-30 min for both sides which is 1.5-3 oz it should take some time for a paced bottle feeding

Coconut oil as long as it's organic has helped me so much!

I switched to just breast milk after I soaked them in the shower and it works wonders. I didn't think it would but, I squeeze a few drops out as often as I can and let it air dry for a min. I can tell the difference in just one day. The lanolin didn't seem to help at all.
...and to be fair it could just be a better latch but its worth a try.
I'm a first time BF mom and I am so lost. Every thing I read has a different opinion on pumping. Idk if I need to pump now, later, or ever??? What would be the reason to pump if I'm a SAHM? Am I not doing something I'm supposed too? I feel like everyone is pumping and I'm missing something.

Not sure if this will help but our LC and Pedi told us to keep the baby upright for at least 20 minutes after a feeding. If you have a mamaroo or a rock n' play this would count as the 20 minutes (for those late night feedings!)
