Names You Wish You Could Use

I thought it'd be kind of fun to start a thread with names you wish you could use for your children :)  They can be silly, names better suited for the opposite sex or the name your bitch friend stole for her kid once you told her.

I'll start!

1) Dick Tracy Tate

2) Captain

3) Harrison

I think normally my husband would go for Harrison but he knows about my huge and ridiculous crush on Harrison Ford so he just laughed when I brought it up lol

  • We found a girl name we love but cant decide on any boys. Here are ones we like but can't use.
    Juliet
    Elliott
    Isabeau
    Tristan
    Paisley
    Kimball
    Ezra
    McKay

  • Harrison! Me too. And...

John (DH's brother whom we don't feel like naming a child after. But I dig the name.)
    Van Helsing
Aaron (DH doesn't want our son thinking we wanted a girl and planned to name her Erin.)
    Casey (another androgynous name.)
    Tom (already named one Tom.)

  • A friend of mine just had a baby and took the name Harper which we loved! I also wanted to name a boy Arrow but my husband said absolutely not!

Just to let you know here in California many of those names are boy names. Not that you should care, if you love it there you go! Tristan is Brad Pitts character in Legends Of The Fall Elliot is my sons name. I know 3 or 4 others all boys Levi just feels boy and Jasper is a boy. (Screw you Twiglist) lol My daughter is Quinn. Mostly a boys name it seems.

We liked Felix but my cousin ended up using it since it ran in her husbands family. We also liked Macy but my best friend took that one for her dog as soon as I told her it was an option for us. I don't want my kid to have the same name as her dog....
I also wanted Amelia but that's the new popular name so it's a no go.

We are considering Quincy or Kinsley for a girl (also love the name Adeline-- yes, from the new movie Age of Adeline) and Riker or Jasper for a boy.
    Naming kids is difficult.
  • I love Poppy for a girl, but my husband just couldn't get on board with it.
Our boy choice was Ramsey James. Ramsey was his great uncle's last name. He was a decorated WW2 fighter pilot and my husband admired him very much. James is after my father. We'd call him RJ which is my husband's godfather's nickname. Lots of meaning and a little bummed to not be using it for those reasons.

  • I have always loved the name Xavier, but my best friend got in just before me so its off the list

  • There's a boy growing in there and I so wanted jackson/jack. My daughter is 4 and obsessed with nightmare before Christmas so of course she loves the name jack. He said no way. Way too popular. I argued that it doesn't matter how popular a name is yaddayadda. Rewind to last weekend, I was doing a seating chart for my best friends wedding reception and there are two Jackson's and one jack coming out of maybe 7 kids! So I'm over it and we have cute names in mind anyway. He really wanted xerxes....oh hell no!

  • I had Erin Danielle picked out for a girl but my husband doesn't like it because his brothers middle name is Aaron and they don't get along. I guess that trumps the fact that Erin is my middle name....
  • I love the name Sadie, but her history with my brother and family would get a huge 'X' for me naming my child "after" her just out of respect for my SIL. Anything close to DH's name or my name is out, so that cuts out some quality names like Ryan, Brianna, Kaitlyn, Kaylynn, Brynn, etc.

We were going to name our daughter Callie Elizabeth, but a month before I had her, my friend had a girl and named her Callie Beth...so...that was out at the time. I would consider it now if DH's aunt hadn't just named their family dog Callie (boo).

I won't use Colton, Michaela, Connor, Isaac, or Morgan due to a string of run-on behavioral issues with students donning those names. TBH, as a teacher, I've found there are a handful of names that end of being nixed each year due to the negative correlation I have with the name through school experiences. I love all of my kiddos, but I don't necessarily want to name my children after them :)
This baby girl is going to be Callie Elisabeth! Too funny!

  • My girl names that we can't use are:
Harper - last year when my brother and SIL were about to have my niece they wife between this and another one and we really hoped they'd go with the other one so we could swipe this..

Kali - was actually set to be my name until my aunt talked my mom out of it. I've always loved it. Brothers dog.

Kyra - saw it in a book years ago. Brought it up for our dog a couple years ago and fiance hates it. Too much like Tyra and apparently he knows a really annoying Tyra

There are more on my list that I know just won't make it to the final list but those are the ones with reasons. Good thing its a girl because we got nowhere with boy names!

I loved London Hail for a boy but my husband said absolutely not :(
  • I've always loved the name Isabella but we have a couple close friends who named their daughters it. Also love Ava but that's apparently super popular too.
For a boy I like River. It's strong, poetic and unique. My husband just thinks it's weird.
  • I love the name Lincoln but with middle and last name starting with L.. it doesn't really work.

Also LOVE Olivia but the rest of the world had to name their child Olivia.

  • Before we found out we were having a girl, DH and I couldn't decide on a boy name.

I suggested Gavin, hubby nixed it

I thought about Isaac because of its significance in the Bible, but I dated a guy named Isaac and that name is forever tarnished

DH suggested Braxton, which is an awesome name in my opinion, but it's already claimed as my nephew's middle name

Then there was Caspian, like Prince Caspian in the Chronicles of Narnia, but DH is not a Narnia fan.

Thankfully we're having a girl so no more naming woes!

  • I have had to give up many names because I'm bilingual and the kid may grow up in one of two countries so the name has to make sense in either.
Names that failed the language test are Aria and Emma. One name I really wanted was Emily, but my MIL has a dog of that name and I can't get over it.

  • We are having a girl and had a very difficult time agreeing on a name. We finally settled on Brice Adelaide. But some names that I loved were...
    Presley (my friend's daughter's name)
Isabella- I've loved since I was a kid but then twilight happened
Sloan- husband wouldn't agree since the character from Enterage was so hot.
  • We really wanted Rockwell for our boy. I made the mistake of mentioning the name and this random friend of ours named her freakin dog Rockwell!

  • My husband nixed these for our girl:

    Maple
    Lotte
    Flora
    Fern
    Freya

Then there's my pick from a few years ago that is just not gonna fly right now:

    Elsa

And of course the boy name we had picked out that just won't work for our girl:

    Arlo David

    Roman
(My favorite name, but SIL already claimed it...and she's not even pregnant. She actually mentioned it way before I got pregnant, and I don't want to take it away from her.)

    Tessa
    Isla
    Willa
(Fiancee hates these, says they sound old lady, but I asked him to reconsider Isla again last night and he said he would...)

    Ruby/Scarlett
(My stepdaughter's name is Rose, so I think we are at our limit for red/pink color names, lol)

    Sophia
    (Way too popular)

    Anything really long/many syllables
(Fiancee's last name is a super long, complicated Italian last name. It will probably take years for the poor kid to learn to spell their last name, I don't want to add a long first name on top of it.)

  • Ursula.
It was my great-aunt's name. She was murdered in the Holocaust. I love the name, but Disney made the name unusable long ago. :c

  • Charlotte is my favorite girl name ever (nothing to do with the SATC character, actually dates back to childhood and "Charlotte's Web."  My best childhood friend named her daughter Charlotte years ago, though, taking it off the table.  Even though that Charlotte is now 16 years old, I'd still not use it.

Moot point, anyway, as we're having a boy.
  • For boy names, I liked Rowan, but my husband was having no part of it.
  • I've also always loved Jack, but then I went and married a guy with a dachshund named Jack.  I can't in good faith name a baby after a dog, no matter how cute the dog.

I like the name Claire for a girl, but unfortunately our last name rhymes with Claire so that is off the table.

The middle name for our baby girl will be Louise, as it is my middle name, my mom's middle name and was my Granny's name. Finding something to go with Louise is interesting, especially when DH doesn't offer much for ideas!!

If I was having a boy, I was seriously thinking of naming him Nolan Ryan. It started out as a joke at first but it started to grow on me after a while! I don't think my hubs was super into it, and my MIL definitely wasn't feeling it.

I don't plan to share our baby girl's name until she's born...I don't want anyone to influence my choice. This is such a big deal!!!
  • If I had a son I wanted to name him Blitzen.. Haha. DH says no way. I guess it's a better dog name. Or reindeer...

For girl I liked Starlynn he also vetoed that. Thought it sounded to much like starling (a bird).

I think my whole family is worried what I might come up with In the end!
  • Not sure if this counts, but in the conversation about names with my SO, I got frustrated and popped out with 'Why don't we just name him Archibald Hammer?' completely sarcastically. Now I can't stop thinking about how masculine the name sounds, and how funny it would be to have a boy named that. Would never use it in real life though!
  • I've also always loved Jack, but then I went and married a guy with a dachshund named Jack.  I can't in good faith name a baby after a dog, no matter how cute the dog.

I've always liked the name Alexander, especially as a middle name. Well my sister named her dachshund Linus Alexander, so that name is forever off the table. That and Ginger, who was my dog's name when I was little.

  • We found out last week that we're having a boy!! We were so surprised to hear this because both sides of the family for DH and I are dominated with girls! We had all girl names picked out so now we need to switch gears and think of boy names (exciting!) - so here were the girl picks:

    Talula (NN: Lulu)

    Lola

    Harper

    Penelope (NN: Penny)

    Lucille

    Samantha

    Scarlett

  • I love the name Birdie for my baby girl but DH vetoed it :(!!!! I am pushing for it to be a middle name but no luck
  • Lol I always wanted Barbara for a girl so we could call her Babs!
