Tuesday rant:  Invited to a gender reveal party this Saturday.  I blame pinterest for this becoming a thing.

    BLEGH.
I get if you want to celebrate. But it shouldn't be a gift giving party AND it's sex, not gender.

The "gender" thing sets me off.
If I was invited to a Sex Reveal Party instead of a Gender Party I'd be stoked ... any party with sex in the name ... but until that happens, no Gender Reveal Parties for me. I hate them with a burning passion.

    True story:

I have a friend who used to live closeby and then moved to BFE, Idaho, for her husband's job.

Child #1 - She wanted a sex  reveal party but all of her friends were up this way. So, she had a friend of ours locally make a cake, invited everyone to get together (mind you, she wouldn't even be at this party because she's in IDAHO) and then Skyped in as one of the guests at the party cut the cake to find out what her kid's sex would be ... and the kicker is that SHE ALREADY KNEW, she just wanted US to be surprised so she could watch.

Child #2 - Still in BFE ... decides to have ANOTHER sex reveal and does pretty much the same thing except this time she also had a cake on the other side of Skype and cut into it at the same time friends over here did so she should be surprised with us. I guess she learned the first time that already knowing the surprise just made the entire thing completely ridiculous and self-centered ... but didn't learn that sex reveal parties in general are bogus and lame.
    ...jfc.

Same.  Sort of.  I want to find out with my family if possible.  Particularly my mom.  So I think it would be fun if we invited them over for dinner and then we all opened an envelope together or something.  No friends, no balloons, no cameras, etc.

I had a sex reveal party. It was in the OR with DH and my doctor. Best kind of reveal, IMO. Yay for team Green!
  • I plan on being team green just to irritate everyone. (Actually to enjoy the surprise but that's a perk.)

This has always been my plan too.  I had to convince my hubby but I think he's just as on board as I am now.

I have absolutely nothing against people who do find out, but I do kind of disagree with the planning argument.  Having a baby is more than pink and blue and trucks and flowers (or at least I sure hope it is!).  A boy or girl, when first born, needs the same items.  That being said, there is also nothing wrong with wanting to have everything pink or blue ahead of time too.  Just different strokes :)

I found out with my first and stressed the entire time she would be born the opposite sex. Having BTDT, I know gender neutral is very easy to do! So my peace of mind & for the added bonus of finding out in a special way, that's what I want to do!

I like the idea of doing a cake with the interior icing being blue or pink. Then it's definitely doable with a small, select group and then you get to eat cake. I offered to do this for a friend - she ultimately decided to go with team green.

I mostly bought neutral stuff anyway, I just wanted to know. There are already so many surprises in the delivery room, I thought it was nice to have at least one surprise revealed earlier on.

OMG - this happened to my SIL's sister.  She already had a son and then got pregnant again.  Well the fetus' penis was hidden in the ultra sound and they thought they were having a girl.  They did the nursery in pink, coming home clothing in pink and then BAM!  It was a boy.  My SIL had to run to Target to get new clothing for her nephew and we all rushed to change the nursery before they got home from the hospital.  All kinds of drama.

  • We've considered team green and very well could still decide to go that way. DH really likes the idea and our nursery will probably be neutral anyway (I'm not interested in a super pink or super blue room!). But, with my anxiety I like to plan things. And I want to connect with baby as much as possible before birth and not having a name for him/her until they are born just doesn't appeal to me. I'd love to be able to call them by their name earlier on. We'll see though. DH may convince me otherwise :)
  • Ugh. Gender reveal parties. Barf. It's very attention whorish in my book. It's especially bad when someone is also having a shower. How many events does one pregnancy need? I promise that no one cares about the sex of your baby that much except for you and maybe the grandparents.

I know a few folks this almost happened to. For some reason or another they got an additional ultrasound and found out the sex was previously wrong!

Our DD was shy & the three times we looked we got a "looks like probably a girl".

You can always have a pet name that's just from you to the baby to connect with. I'm a big planner too and wanted to find out, but was talked out of it and I'm glad I was. It was one of the best moments of my life to hear DH say "it's a...girl!" (Pause and all because he had to figure out what he was or wasn't seeing).

My sis had a very frustrating sex reveal experience with her last child. They wanted to be team green since it was their fourth and last child and they made that very clear to their doctors. At one of her ultrasounds the tech started saying things like "awww, isn't she precious" ... or "so polite keeping her legs closed like a little lady" etc. Then made this awful face like she realized what she had done. She scurried out of the room, gave my sis the envelope with the sex in it in case they changed their mind, and her appt was over.

My sis was devastated and my BIL was pissed!

After their other three kids they always went to the store and bought their first outfit after finding out the sex. They had decided to skip this after the tech ruined it but then decided they should go anyway ... in the car they decided to open the envelope just to be sure before going in, and it said BOY. Wut!? That tech was either really stupid, trying to throw them off, or really stupid.
  • Ahh, you ladies are awesome! Can I rant some more? 2 CVS, a rite aid, and a walmart later and my lunch break has been wasted looking for Basal Thermometers. Dammit, Walgreens, you better not let me down!!!!

P.S. Someone needs to tell gender revealing mom that it's totally cool to celebrate only amongst her family. That's like having to buy someone a toaster for their second wedding. Sorry, but you've had your time in the spotlight. Move over, Beyonce.

I was unsuccessful at finding one at my Walgreens, but was able to at CVS.

I believe someone had said they got one ordered at Walgreens and picked it up, but I'm not 100%.

That's the worst! Every tech we saw asked before we got started if we knew what we were having somit gave us the opportunity to tell them ourselves to keep it quiet. I can't even imagine how I woukd have handled that!

  • @kyleneum13 something similar happened to my parents.  My mom had different medical issues with all of her previous pregnancies and always ended up finding out the sex ahead of time.  #4 was going very smoothly though, and they wanted it to be a surprise because it was their last.  We all went to the ultrasound appointment, and when they were done, apparently I had strong words with the doctor and told him that I was definitely getting a sister this time (I was 5, lol).  And the doctor said "Wellllll, I hope you won't be too disappointed."  Womp, womp.

Oh no! That's funny though :)
Oh yeah, they laugh about it now.  But they were super ticked at the time!
I'm sure they were! The doc should have played that a little better for sure ... I just laugh that you as a five year old were so adamant about wanting a sister!

I already had 2 brothers, so I knew that was my last shot.  I wasn't messing around, lol.

  • I will probably have a sex reveal party, but for family only. I like the idea of everyone finding out at once. And yes, it will be called a sex reveal, lol.

I had a sex reveal party. It was in the OR with DH and my doctor. Best kind of reveal, IMO. Yay for team Green!
I'm such a planner that I couldn't do that... I admire the women that can!
    *child mentioned*

I found out with my first and stressed the entire time she would be born the opposite sex. Having BTDT, I know gender neutral is very easy to do! So my peace of mind & for the added bonus of finding out in a special way, that's what I want to do!

I know a few folks this almost happened to. For some reason or another they got an additional ultrasound and found out the sex was previously wrong!

Our DD was shy & the three times we looked we got a "looks like probably a girl".

This did happen to my sister.  She had TWO ultrasounds where she was told she was having a girl, we threw her a girl shower and everything.  My dad though kept saying it was a boy, he just knew it was going to be a boy. And we would all roll our eyes and be like the chances of that are soooo slim.  Luckily, my dad brought a bag of "gender neutral" (pretty much boy) clothes to the hospital so the baby at least had something to wear home.

    New one for today.

I apparently stress too much and am causing my own edit * trouble conceiving.

    Hmph.
  • @27alex UGH. I'm irritated for you.

Oh, and someone on the Dec BMB board basically just said that my DH is a sex freak, doesn't understand pregnancy, and doesn't care about the baby as much as sex ... because a few of us said that our DHs are bummed that we're not as interested in sex right now ... and because some of us offered BJs in place of sex to accommodate.

    Wut?

Oh HELL no. But in a twisted way I'm glad that your BMB isn't super awesome like this one. Because if it was you wouldn't be here with us as much! *now leaving to go lurk that board because seriously, wtf? i have to see this for myself*
