  • You know your body best, so leave when you can't take it. I don't work on my feet and already feel I'm almost at my breaking point, I thought I could make it till I'm 39 weeks but as the weeks progress it's not looking like I can make it. I would say with a harder job like yourself maybe early or mid April

  • I only work at a office job and I'm finding it difficult by the end of the day. Yesterday by lunch my feet had swollen up so much I thought we were going to have to cut my boots off to get them off and my calves were going purple. Thankfully my boss lets me work from home two days a week and I plan on leaving work on April 17 and I'm due May 1
  • I work in a lab all day with constant standing and need to be very focused all the time, I thought I could push it till week 38 but yesterday I realized it was a far shot with all the heaviness and pain I am having. I called HR to start my maternity leave at 36 weeks. Baby is due May 2nd.
  • 31 weeks here and so ready to be done work. My job isn't so much physically exhausting as it is mentally and emotionally. I'm a social worker in a hospital so I am constantly dealing with families in crisis.

I have 5 weeks left of work before I go on vacation for 2 weeks and then officially start my mat leave. And believe me - I am counting down the days!!! I've been fortunate to have some banked overtime that is paying off and I have had a few short weeks and some long weekends which have helped.

As PP said though, you know your body best. So take each day as it comes and do not feel any guilt if you need to wave that white flag earlier than you expected.
  • I'm also 5/5/15 :-), but yep I'm feeling it, I sit at a desk and I've had enough now, I'm in for 2 days next week and then have 8 days off and then in for 3 days and then 2 weeks holiday and then leave for maternity till the end of January 16, I can't wait :-)
  • I'm a peri teacher and move between schools all day. I'm ok to keep working but going off at Easter... Luckily our maternity leave works different here in the UK so I don't have to worry financially.
  • I'm a PE teacher and due 5.4.15 I think teaching and being on my feet all day, and surrounded by teens, has helped time go by quicker and kept me more active. I feel worse after sitting for an hour at home and getting up then on my feet all day. I also haven't starting swelling, and think that's because of so much time on my feet. I have a two week spring break coming up and then will only have 4 weeks till my due date. Hoping I can keep feeling ok and make it-getting a little more tired though halfway through third tri. Goodluck to you, like others-you know your body and when enough is enough
  • I quit early on due to being treated poorly once boss found out I was pregnant.. As I was casual (where I worked all positions were casual except manager so you still worked normal hours) they were able to reduce/increase hours whenever they felt like and when I told my boss I was pregnant I got ONE DAY a week.. And shifts are only 6 hour shifts. I'd prefer to be home relaxing tbh

@HSTeacherHeidi I totally agree. I think being at work had made the time go fast. Teaching all day makes you forget all your aches and pains until you get home and want to collapse. ;)
Do what you can but don't push too hard.

I'm also a teacher and the dr told me I could go on leave bc I'm high risk. I agree the time goes faster if I'm at school. Plus I can sit a little if I need too with my position and have a schedule that gives me a break in the morning and afternoon. I'm hoping to make it to the day before I have my csection.
  • I'm due 5-18 and my last day at work is may 8. I'm a hairdresser and makeup artist and thought I could go til the end. By the end of the day lately my feet are so swollen and pink that they look like Easter hams. I'm trying to book myself more facials and pedicures so I can sit instead of being on my feet, but even giving pedicures is getting hard as my belly gets bigger. I would leave now if I could.
  • I want to wave the white flag so bad! I'll be 32 weeks on Monday, but my job does not give me maternity leave. I don't have a weeks vacation until July either. I work in a small practice dental office where it is just me and one other person up front. It's a 7 person office all together. My boss has been "thinking" on letting me work from home some days once my daughter is here. But she expects me to be back to work immediately. I told her I need at these the first couple weeks, and will come in when I can. She won't let me work from home just yet, because she has things she needs to take care of before I'm out she says. I'm just stressed all day, I deal with insurances. And then there are the days when I have to go in the back office and help, and it kills me. I can't afford to quit, nor do I really want to, my husband has a great job. But it would be to tight. Sorry, I didn't mean for that to turn into a rant. Lol
  • I'm due may 8, I've been out since mid Jan. I'm an RN in a super busy floor and being pregnant with twins I couldn't keep up nor could my body. I was swelling and cramping. I'm so grateful to be home right now.
  • I'm so ready to wave the flag!!!! My belly is humongous, plus I have to do three flights of stairs several times in the day.... God knows I'm so miserable right now. ... what's making it so bad is the my belly is really low.... and walking is torture! Plus I hardly sleep. ... to be up by 6 am! Ugh.... may 15 seems so far away!
  • Thanks for all the info! I will talk to my OB at our next apt! Good luck ladies! Our beautiful babies will make it all worth it! But ohhhh I am Soo ready to have control of my body again!
  • I do hair and makeup and plan on working till the end of April. I have cut back my hours but someday that doesn't mean anything. I'm due 5/7.
  • i'm at a work conference right now, and had to skip a work dinner because my body just refused to cooperate. I know it can seem like a luxury to take time off when you're tired, but I'm a firm believer in listening to what your body is telling you and acting accordingly. No job is more important that your (and the baby's) health.
  • I'm due 5/7 and will be going out on medical leave on 4/9. While I wanted to work up until my due date, my doctor said not resting before birth is like running a marathon exhausted- it really made me think. I commute 4 hours a day and work a very demanding and stressful job where I'm on my feet all day- it seems like they'd be happy if I took no time off and worked through it all and from what I've heard they don't even have a solid backup plan for coverage for me while I'm away yet. Take care of yourselves and go out when you are able to and feel you need it. I'm going to use the few weeks off before my due date first to rest, then to cook and freeze meals for when baby comes, and to finish prepping things (cleaning house, stocking up on necessities, enjoying the baby shower, putting baby presents away, and washing and laundry). It's crazy how close we are all getting- so exciting!!!
  • You ladies are by far...stronger then I
    I am due 5/19 and I haven't worked since
    Feb 4th
  • I'm 31 weeks and going to talk to my boss this week about dropping a shift so I would be part time. I just can't do 3 12's anymore on a busy unit. I'm hoping to work until 36/37 weeks and I think dropping to 2 shifts will work out better for my body. My hips and pelvis are just so sore right now.

  • I would love to not be working right now. I spend most days on my feet and walk A LOT. However, I'm working up until I have the baby so that I can get as much time at home with him/her as possible. I know I would regret going out early and then losing those weeks home with LO.
  • I'm working for as long as humanly possible. We need both of our incomes as long as possible and I want to maximize my maternity leave while baby is here. I only get 8 weeks so it would be awful if I had to leave work early. Luckily I'm at a desk job now so it's tolerable. The hour plus commute each way on public transportation is not though. Ick.

This happened to me too! I've been off since I was 20 weeks, I'm incredibly bored but healthy at 32 weeks now. Would have liked to work til 36 weeks, but hey what can you do?
  • I am a RN in a super busy Pediatric ER and just found out I have kidney stones... :( I took this past week off, and am really not sure I want to go back. kidney stones hurt! Being on my feet for 12+ hours hurts! I thought I could make it until my due date, but now I'm not so sure....
  • I'm a full time store manager working 45 hours a week. I didn't have the option of part time or half days so I just went out. Today is my first day of leave and I'm due May 3rd!
  • I work at a daycare in the 12-18 month room. I'm constantly picking kids up even though I'm on a 25lb weight restriction. I have sharp pains up my vagina constantly and walking down the hall way is even becoming hard. Because I have a car payment now I won't take off until 5/13 and I'm due the 16th but measuring a day ahead.

  • I'm a third grade special Ed teacher and on my feet a lot. I haven't had any issues with swelling but lots of back pain. I'm at 31 wks now and would love to throw in the towel and stay home now but my students would be so confused. I am planning to work as long as possible but want to at least make it to 36/38 wks before I consider leaving.. I get a lot of breaks so that helps, but I notice more aches and pains in my belly and get out of breath easily already
  • I am due may 16th (32 weeks now) and I work as a cleaner at a college.. surrounded by not to grown up kids going to college.. cleaning up there dirt and grime lol. I am trying my best to stay at work till may 1st but with how sore I am when I get up in the morning from working is really hard. I have yet to have any swelling tho in my feet or hands and at my last Dr appointment my Dr asked if I was taking walks with the dog and staying active.. looked at him and laughed.. reminded him where I worked and he started to giggle.. Said right makes sense why your at a good weight for how many weeks you are. Lol so one good benifit to having an active job.. after reading everyone else's posts I can say I don't think I have it to bad.
  • I am a first grade teacher in a school where we only have school 4 days a week. Because of this we have longer days and no breaks (except for lunch). So I'm up teaching and being needed from 8:30 when they walk in until 4:15 when the bus pulls out. I think being so active has helped me have a healthy and uncomplicated pregnancy, but by the end of the day I'm so exhausted. My brain becomes mush and I'm almost always waddling by that point. I would love to cut out now at 31 weeks but I only have three weeks paid.
  • This question has been bothering me for some time now.
I can honestly say that I admire many, if not all of you lovely mothers to be. I am an Emergency Services Dispatcher... I sit on my butt all day long, and don't have to deal with these people in person, only on the phone.

I think I have mapped out my maternity leave accordingly, however my doctor wants me to begin leave sooner rather than later.
I will say that this second pregnancy, will unfortunately be my last, but to hear the doctor tell me that he was more concerned for my mental health, and the issue of PPD than my physical body. This almost sent me into an emotional frenzy.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this talk with their doctors, and what their opinions are on the matter.

As for leave...my doctor feels that leaving work around April 6th with an EDD of May 10th, would be best. That's almost a whole month. It honestly has me at my wits end. I wouldn't know what to do for a month, if I lasted that long.

  • 5 more get ups to go!!!!!

Can't wait, I'm healthy and well but working (as much as I love my job) is knackering.

I was planning to go until April 15th for my may 9 due date.

Recently doc expects me to be closer to april 20 and I'm on modified bed rest as of Thursday night.

    The best laid plans....

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • I was taken out of work on Tuesday. Due May 9th. I teach kindergarten and commute two hours a day. On Monday I was having dizzy spells and the school nurse took my bp at 190/100. My FIL had to come pick me up and take me to the hospital. It came back down to normal thank goodness. Tuesday I went in to do report cards and then had a follow up and it was still elevated so my doctor took me out.

I'm so thankful to have this extra time (I'm not going back after baby) with my son before he's a big brother. But I think the end of pregnancy is going to drag a bit now!

  • As someone else said every pregnancy and situation is different. I'm a Gyn cancer surgeon I will work until 5/25 with a 5/28 due date (I decided to not start that week of work). The 80 hour plus work weeks and the occasional going in at 1 am is tiring but so far I'm managing.
  • I'm an event chef with STARR and was working 12-14 hour days during the winter. Fortunately for me hubs has a great job and even though I like having the extra Income, we won't die without it. I'm bored out of my mind sometimes ( been off since late January, baby due in May 13) it's way better than having high blood pressure, stress, etc. plus I'm high risk after two previous losses, so for my situation the health of the baby (which includes my physical and emotional state) is worth the early time off. Good luck!!
  • I teach high school and I've already started sitting when I teach because my body won't let me stand too much. I'm due May 1st but starting my leave April 17th. I'm wishing I could start now because everyday is a struggle to get up and go to work.

Just read through these posts and had to stop and pat myself on the back. 2nd pregnancy here, due May 7th and had/have every intention in working right up to the week I am due like my first pregnancy. This time around I am suffering from bad pelvic pain that really makes it difficult to get up and go in my pretty active job as a construction manager. sleeping through the night is a long lost memory. I put 50-60 hrs in a week but really can't afford to take much time before baby since maternity leave is not paid. 5/6 weeks of disability insurance is all I got with some banked vacation time. I just never really gave it much thought I guess, but I can see this time around not making it as long as planned. Fortunately, I have the luxury to work from home and may plan for that towards the end especially if this pelvic/back pain persists.
  • I'm teaching too, and counting the days... work is getting more and more exhausting and I've got to say I dread it now, even though I used to like my job. Not sleeping at night makes it hard to deal with kids all day, and I've gotten 4 colds in 2 months.  I will have to work until my doctor decides to write a note that I should stay home so might ask at my 8 mo appointment, even though I had the best of intentions of working till my due date.
  • I am due 5/20 and my last day of full time work is 4/4. I work a regular eight hour shift on my feet the entire time but can't seem to slow down when I get home until bed. While I plan on working part-time until a week before my due date I don't know how close I'll get. I have had such bad swelling in my right leg that I was checked for DVT and moved to weekly check ups otherwise I've had the easiest pregnancy. I applaud the women who work till the day of but I'm okay not being one of them. :)
