Just wondering I've heard so many different things. Just wanted to maybe hear from other moms what they have received or think they will get. Thanks in advance
Depends on the hospital. With my first we got a ton of diapers, a couple hats, a onesie, and some of the standard blankets. Also pads, numbing spray and a squirt bottle for mom. In a hospital I did some clinicals at they also gave out some nice halo swaddles. Also if you don't breast feed or need to supplement they will usually give some formula.
This will be my first baby too, but my doc and mom said they give you a lot of stuff pads, diapers, wipes, breast feeding supplies, samples of formula or single bottles, nose aspirator, pacifier (if you told them to try for baby), stuff for your hooha..cause yeah, it's going to be sore for a bit. and that you should bring a seperate empty bag to bring it home, or room in bag your taking. And of course a prescription for pain pills

It's a vagina. You can say it, we're adults here... Well most of us..
It's been a few years but I remember getting all the things @jillbabe91 said... Also they gave me a diaper bag but it was plain & I didn't like it - but useful to carry stuff home.
I'm giving birth this time at university hospital and they are giving all babes a blanket themed for the university football team (lol) -- so they throw in extra stuff
All hospitals are different. You should go on a tour and ask while you're there. They'll be able to let you know what they can/will send you home with.
This isn't necessarily true and probably varies from hospital to hospital. I was given pain meds the 2 days I was in the hospital but I was discharged they didn't give me a prescription and told me to take Tylenol for pain

Really! Well in my case I get two babies. I'm assuming OP meant to take home and if that is the case the only way to know is to ask HER hospital. They are all different, and not all give free handouts. Personally I am not all about the free handouts. I spent 10 years going through fertility treatments, so I am more than prepared to pay for the needs of both of my babies. It doesn't really bother me that my hospital gives nothing to take home other than a baby.
In short the only universally correct answer is a baby.
It really depends on the hospital. If you know anyone who has delivered at the same hospital, you should ask them. It's best to go in prepared just in case they don't provide a whole lot. With my DD, my hospital really only provided the mesh underwear, massive-ass pads, some diapers, and the squeeze bottle for my bottom. I think we also may have gotten a receiving blanket or two. No fancy stuff though.
If you go on to read my explanation it is actually the most accurate. Not all hospitals give you stuff to take home, so it is best to ask your own hospital. My advice, be prepared financially to take care of your own babies needs and don't expect anything free.
My ob told me to make sure I brought an extra bag to take home all they have to offer. I'll be bringing all the necessities to make sure We won't be needing anything but it'll be nice to come home with a hospital care package !
@djoliet ouch! Well at least they gave you pain pills while you were there. I'm astonished they told you to just take Tylenol, that's not very helpful at all with that kind of pain.
I wouldn't count on anything in particular aside from there being diapers in the room for use there. I would check with a friend who delivered at the same location. Some hospitals for example will charge you for any breastfeeding stuff you need others will give you lots. Some hospitals are more stingy on diapers and you may not end up coming home with any. Some hospitals provide pacifiers others don't use/have them unless you bring them.
@jillbabe91 honestly it wasn't that bad. I don't even really remember taking much Tylenol afterward. I had a 1st degree tear and was up and moving around most of the time I was in the hospital. The pain was bearable but increase in bleeding from moving around so much wasn't fun
I heard a rumor that they are doing away with samples of formula and diaper bags. To promote breastfeeding, which I think is kinda rude there are mothers who can't for medical reasons or they just don't want to.I would give the hospital a call to check,Also like many ladies have stated bring your own just to be safe better to be over prepared then have nothing. I am hoping I get Lil freebie but I am bringing everything I need just to be safe ..
My hospital plans on giving me lots of things. The best thing you can do is ask when you go on tour of the maternity ward don't ever be afraid to ask questions!
Whatever they give you it is not enough to count on for more than a day outside the hospital if you get anything at all. Instead of being worried about what free crap you get be prepared to bring baby home on your own. The answer to your question is still a baby.

You think it's rude that you won't have free formula to take home? If you're planning on formula feeding your baby, it seems to me that you should probably have the means to do that in your home prior to bringing a baby home.
My hospital sent me home with diapers, pacifiers, and formula samples for the baby. They also sent me home with breastfeeding supplies like lanolin, hydragel pads, extra manual pump, and breast pads for leakage. Then they also sent me home with essentials for taking care of yourself down below, those were things like huge disposable underwear, giant pads, peri bottle, witch hazel pads, numbing spray, stool softener and hemorrhoid cream.

Rude? No -- when hospitals give out advertisements for formula makers, it sends a message that undermines breastfeeding AND hurts formula feeding moms. FF moms will stick with the expensive brand name formulas because it seems the hospital has endorsed it as best, or baby started in it & they are afraid to switch. And when hospitals give out free formula samples breastfeeding rates are lower. That's why baby friendly certified hospitals & others trying to follow best practices do not give out free formula advertisements.
I was a postpartum nurse at a baby friendly hospital. We provided formula to all FF babies for use while in the hospital & a few bottles to go home with. Beyond that it was the family's responsibility to feed the kid.
OP: we gave out very little. If moms asked we'd give a few pads, a few diapers, a few ice packs, a sitz bath, a peri bottle, a bulb syringe, a box of breast pads...abdominal binder... Oh yes -- & nipple hydrogels, breast shield IF NEEDED, manual breast pump (billed to your account, I believe)... Basically nothing special (except the sitz bath & Peri bottle -cheap but functional). We were a public state funded hospital. You might get more crap if you are in a private hospital that only sees insured patients. Which Is why I originally came here to say what had already been said: they give you the baby. Anything else varies.

Yep, what she said. I'm a ff mom and it wasn't rude to me. I used the samples I got from my OB and then switched to the SAMs brand. To be honest I didn't think anything of it.
I find this comment to be rude/inflammatory and it's lessening my enjoyment of the community. You should know that posts that lessen everyone's enjoyment of The Bump are considered TOU violations and you can therefore receive warnings from our lovely overlor.... er, Bump admins.
Nope. Not everyone here will be getting a bill. I'm sure there are many who will have it "taken care of" for them. Sorry, I stand corrected. They may get a bill, but won't be the ones paying for it.
What I meant was that some mom's who can't BF because of medical reasons or choice might find it as a insult that the hospital is not supplying formula. I was told by my hospital to bring my own formula with me because they don't keep a supply on hand in order to promote breastfeeding. I intend on bringing everything for myself an my baby, I am hoping they will have diapers and wipes but I am bringing those as well better to be over prepared then have nothing I hope this clears things up I just feel that all mom's and there choice should be supported. I would like freebies considering the huge bill lol but most hospitals are doing away with them..

I was just talking with a friend last night who had a C-section and didn't start producing colostrum at the hospital. The staff snotted off at her about how unhealthy formula was, and rationed it when they fed her daughter. Poor kid screamed the entire stay, until they brought her home and freely fed her.
I think that shit is borderline evil. If you care more about your agenda than a starving newborn, you are a sick person.
I'm with @finallyourturn2 At my hospital , I got the bottles she used there, the diaper she was wearing , the beanie and onsie they put on her after birth, and a huge bill. So that is really the only thing most hospitals give you. Unless you're at a hospital that gives you extras , but I'm not expecting it this time either.

That is terrible, like borderline medical malpractice terrible, especially considering she had to stay longer to recover from a C-section.
I am going to do a combination of BF and FF -- if they treat me like this I'm going to raise hell in L&D lol.
@Peledreamsofrain and @Christina1939 Some nurses are like that. I had emergency c section with my daughter. They had me pump and pump, I didn't even produce colostrum. My daughter was jaundiced and crying, and she had a cleft lip and palate. It was impossible for her to suck , but they still kept forcing me to try to get her to latch on. They finally gave us formula after I got angry. They put in this canteen kind of thing with tubes that they taped by my nipples to get her to "breast feed" that way. With no top lip, or palate, they expected her to suck the milk.... I was not making. They made me feel like a second rate mother because after all that I said I give up and she will be formula fed. I was young, now that am older I realize how wrong that was.

Oh my god.... That is horrible. Did they make you feed her like that the entire time you stayed at the hospital?
I am studying public health right now, and it makes me totally sick that medical professionals are allowed to push agendas on others like this. It totally contradicts the end goal of the field. I mean, breastfeeding is better, but you have to let everyone make their own choice. This is why people hate hospitals and the medical field in general!
@christina1939 after a few days a nurse from another unit heard about it. She had s daughter with the same thing. She got her hands on some special bottles/nipples and helped me out. She inspired me to become a nurse myself My experience before her was awful

That sounds awful. How emotional and traumatizing for you.
This is the treatment I was speaking of they don't give away free samples to take home fine ..But to treat a mom like a criminal because she is FF is very unethical!!!I am bringing all my own formula, diapers, wipes as well as clothes. I am all for breastfeeding it's best for a healthy mom and baby. Not all women can breastfeed or want to an some babies can't nurse successfully at birth. To allow a newborn to go hungry an struggle to feed is cruel it also effects the bonding experience. I cannot breastfeed because of a heart condition the medicine I am on can effect my babies heart rate as well blood pressure, so I have to FF, but to be told I need to bring my own because they don't keep a supply to promote Breastfeeding?? My baby and my health should not be placed at risk to promote breastfeeding. Why can't we support mom's and the choice no matter if they choice to breastfeed or to formula feed. I am so sorry to hear so many of you had to go though such horrible experiences my heart goes out to you.
@theladycoy13 , do what is best for you and baby ! I would love to BF this baby, but if I can't , I have no problem FF her. As long as she has a full tummy and is healthy, that is all that matters
I am absolutely appalled by all the stuff I am reading about these nurses pushing their BF agendas on moms! I have made the decision to FF due to my chronic migraines and my hospital told me "no worries just let us know when you get here and we will have it ready to go in your room." I was stunned that they were that nice about it. They told us public hospitals get a supply of formula from the WIC program so they only supply Enfamil branding because of that so if we wanted something different to bring it. As a FTM, I was just going to go with what the hospital provided unless we had to switch for another reason.
I'm so sorry to all the ladies who have had degrading situations happen to them over the BF and FF debate. I would have tried BF if I could but a hospital should not put you or your baby in jeapordy over an agenda! I hope that this time around is more positive for you.
