LOL, you don't need a disclaimer, dork!
lol.  I know with this group, I hopefully don't need one (I hope you all know I'm not a jerk).  BUT, I know I would get annoyed when people would tell me how easy I had it when I only had one kid.  Or before I had kids etc...  So, I threw it out there.  :)

  • Ok, I've watched Arrested Development (favorite show in the world), Vampire Diaries until I lost interest.  I watch a lot of tv apparently.

I will add to my list Parenthood, 6 feet under, the good wife, and I'm a season or two behind on True Blood.

I have not watched Revenge or Scandal.  Are they supposed to be good?  I love mystery/suspense dramas.
Revenge is like the show that wouldn't die.  The first season is good, the second is okay, and then it just gets crazy and stupid.  I LOVE Scandal.  I am waiting for the next season but I really like it!

You would love Revenge- It's in the 4th (?) season right now, and is getting a bit crazy with all the new plots they're throwing in, but I loved the first 2. And I just started Scandal this past summer and watched the first two seasons in like a month or two. It's got a good plot, and has some steamy love triangles.

Let me tell you about the hour I wasted using every damn search engine out there and ended up finding the exact same price on all of them.  So I booked it directly with American Airlines, which was the same price as every other website.

If I need a site to start my search, I usually go to expedia or priceline.

We really liked Revenge until this season. We were so into it until really, really weird shit started to happen so we lost interest. I watched season 1 of Scandal and was hooked then I couldn't keep up with episodes and had an entire season to watch. I ended up deleting it but it was good.

I'm not sure what's on Netflix but we really like Modern Family, Mike and Molly, Castle and The Blacklist.

    RE: airfare
I search Expedia or Priceline (usually just one; they will be about the same if you're looking for airfare only) AND Southwest since it is not on any of those sites.

If I'm looking for airfare and hotel., I use whichever of those two that gives the best ebates (they usually only do % back on hotels, not airfare).  If I have maximum flexibility for hotel location (I'm traveling with a car, dense city, etc.) then I name my own price on priceline and get a better hotel for the price.

If the flight I decide to book is a single airline all the way through (AA, United, etc.) for all flights, I might get crazy and check directly with the airline because their cancellation terms might be better.  That's less of a problem than it used to be, though.

All of the prices are pretty much the same regardless of what you do.  All of those sites are owned by the same one or two companies, and airlines have gotten a handle on price control.

We go through the airline because we usually use points along with purchasing. I haven't found a site that is cheaper than just going through the airlines in my searches. I haven't used Priceline though, I think they do something like match the lowest price within the time you book and fly, something like that.

  • I'm looking for something and don't know what to search for.

I have operators that need to run a machine for somewhere between 18-26 hours (it varies based on the day).  They are having trouble with the math.  If they start the machine at 2pm, and the chart says they have to run "x" hours, they need something they can glance at that tells them what time they need to be back to terminate the cycle.  Is there some kind of chart, tool, app, anything that can do that for them?  What would that be called?

To me, it's all about the delivery on how you say it.  She should respect your knowledge of the company having been in other areas.  Start with, "when I worked in finance, I learned that such and such hits these budgets, do you want me to do some research to see if it's the same with our department?"

I would draw on your prior experience but avoid telling her that's she's wrong directly (since I'm gathering you don't have that type of relationship).  I have a lot of people on my team that came from different areas prior to our team, so I'm constantly leveraging their expertise from other areas.  I'd have no problem telling my boss she's wrong and I would bring whatever proof I needed - but her and I have a pretty open relationship.  :)

I agree, my response would depend on my relationship with my boss and her personality.

Offer up your research services by letting her know that when you were in finance x hit x's cost center/budget and you would be happy to reach out to your contacts to see if that is still the case. That way you are not telling her she is wrong, or that you know how it all works. You are simply offering to look into it further. If she takes you up on it, you can do a full scale review and provide your findings. I would double check all your assumptions to make sure they are still true as things can change and you want to keep email proof, instead of just going off of what was true last year. If she doesn't take you up on your offer, her ship to bankrupt.

Thanks ladies!  After everything that went down this summer, our relationship is very guarded and she doesn't do much for me and tries to stay out of my way.  It has made working for her crappy, but I can't change what she did, so I just keep on keeping on.

I will offer to research and find out, but I imagine she will take the stance of this is her ship and she will do as she pleases.

I don't know about the price guarantee... that would require paying attention and following up haha.

But for getting a good hotel, it's awesome to name your price.  You have to be flexible.  You can look at what they consider an "area" (sometimes it's too large, and might land you too far away from a conference center, etc.), then you select your minimum star rating for a hotel (in downtown Indy there are only so many 4 and 5 * hotels), then you name your own price.  I check out the 4 star hotels in a city on their regular booking page, see that the lowest price is $260/nt, then I bid $180/nt.  You may get it, you may not.  If you get it, you bought it, and you can't cancel it.  You have to make your best offer, otherwise you have to have another login to try again.

I made that seem so much more difficult than it is.

Here's a tip - NEVER do it with a flight.  You will have 10 connections and triple travel time, it's so not worth it.

It's not consistent, it depends on what they're processing.  I would hate to give someone 8 charts to juggle.  We already have so many stinkin charts.

I only name my own price on a hotel, but priceline's search seems to work like everyone else's for the flights, so that's why it's a good site for me to start at.  If I'm looking for a hotel, I'm already there.

The name your own price has worked for us a couple times.  I always look at the area closely though before I follow through.  There are times that I've felt the search area was too wide and I was going to end up in a place I didn't want.  Then I'll avoid it.

That doesn't bother me because they spread the drama across so many of the families.  When it comes down to it, they do have a lot that hits the same extended family.  But with 4 kids that each have their own families, it doesn't quite feel to me like they have so much going on.

I have no idea if he's going to live or die, but it definitely feels like they're leaning the way of the latter.

I have learned that there are a hell of a lot of people that never think Budget before they make plans. Most of the people I deal with have no idea how much things cost.

To deal, you should ask how it will affect our budget and has she spoken to someone in Budget before making decisions? In as diplomatic a way as possible.

  • I'm obsessed with looking at PB quilts for the kids' rooms.  I tried to join the PBK B/S/T on FB and they haven't accepted my join request for TWO DAYS.  I am stalking my FB for acceptance.  I'm desperate and sad.
  • jumping in too late but:
    1) congrats @marisakathleen on the 2nd interview
    2) show recs: i second breaking bad. it took me a long time (like, a year+) to make my way through the first few episodes - they were just too upsetting to me in concept. but it's a really fantastic show. for something less thinky, we're watching happy endings (half hour friend-like comedy). not sure if U.S. netflix has it though
    3) we couldn't get a sitter, so i'm stuck at work while the rest of my lab is off on a retreat. sads. i'm going to make myself feel better by going shopping tonight to get a new outfit for an upcoming conference.

  • I am being such a fucking brat about not wanting to talk to people.  I keep putting calls off and it's already 2pm.  Guess I'll get one out of the way now.  I just want to be done with work already.

  • I get to have hate chicken (aka Chic-Fil-A) for lunch.  I'm kind of excited about it.

@tinyhumantoe I would have told him to fuck off too.  Until he carries a baby and knows exactly what it is like, he doesn't get to talk about how easy it would be!

  • I don't know what is wrong with me today - i suppose i felt like i had nothing to contribute :(

DH and I are watching breaking bad on netflix now, so i recommend that one :), we were also watching the wire also good, however its an HBO show so I am not sure if its on netflix or has limited seasons.  it seems we might be on a drug / crime drama show binge.  I've heard good things about the orange is the new black and the house cards.  those might be next for us.

  • I'm in a grant update and there's a guy in my meeting who has mentioned his new baby 3x.  We're only 13 minutes into the meeting.

    Dude.  We get it.

Baby's name?  Canasia.  Because his wife is from Canada and his grandparents are from Jamaica.

My UO- I think I'm a bitch for thinking this. I have a hard time deciphering bitch vs legit opinion. DD loves watching nursery rhyme songs on YouTube and singing along. A lot of them are sung by kids. I change the video if the kid doesn't pronounce the words correctly. I don't want DD picking up a habit of not saying her Rs or saying certain words wrong.
I don't think this is bitchy. I feel the same way. I think it makes sense to want to provide explains of proper speech.

There used to be this show on Disney Jr. Maybe it's still on, I just haven't seen it in a while. It's called 3rd and Bird. The main character talks in a baby voice and doesn't pronounce things correctly. I couldn't get past it and never let the kids watch it.
This seems completely reasonable - what is unreasonable is the kids or adults mispronouncing things in the first place.  by accident ok but otherwise.

and speaking of children's shows.  Is anyone else annoyed by Thomas?  My son loves trains and i think Thomas by default and DH and his friend (also a father of two boys: 2 and just under 1) are extremely annoyed by how Thomas always seems to F everything up and go about his merry way.  And its every show.

I purposely try to only put on dinosaur train whenever grant ask for choo choo.  At least that show has some educational value....  He seems to be ok with -luckly!!!

This was going to be my suggestion.  Dinosaur train is on my list of shows that doesn't annoy me.

When Brody was little we let him watch Yo Gabba Gabba once.  Then it turned out that I hated it.  But he kept asking for it.  We found bubble guppies and started pushing that on him.  Over time we kept saying no to Gabba and yes to bubble guppies and officially converted him.

Somehow now that he's older, I can't get him to stop wanting to watch Peter Rabbit (I find that show annoying for some reason).  You win some, you lose some.

Oh hi! I've never used Priceline's name you price thingy. I just went on there because we're heading north in a couple weeks for my nephews birthday. I couldn't find anything for less than $140/night. This isn't a great area so I couldn't believe the prices. If you do the "name your own price" are you locked in to it. I made it as far as putting my initials but I want to know the price I'd pay. I'm confused on the whole thing.
