I saw a Dateline this weekend about a nanny cam catching abuse. So hard to watch and one of the main reasons I feel more comfortable in a center setting where there are a lot of people around, live feed cameras, and parents picking up/ dropping off all throughout the day.
The one where the child is eating on the sofa and pukes?  :(  I agree with everything you said.... but W is in an at-home daycare and I really love the family.  I do have second thoughts about it often.  DH thinks I'm a freak for frequently checking her genitals during baths or changes and asking her very specific questions about her day.  I'm just gathering information - it's really not so much about the daycare or a particular person, it's just good practice IMO.

No, she was shaking the baby as the baby was screaming. The nanny spotted the camera, picked it up, looked right into it, and then turned it towards the wall. The mom is an attorney in AR and is now lobbying to create a required database for child abusers like the sex registry. The woman plead out to a lesser charge and could possibly talk her way into being a nanny for someone again.

  • I'm doing experiences for my Mom/sisters/Nancy's Nana for Christmas this year.  So far, for my sister & Nancy's Nana, I found these awesome Milwaukee food tours.  You get on a bus for 3 hours and go to different places featuring whatever the theme is.  Pizza, Bloody Mary's & Brunch, BBQ, Fish Fry's, or go to specific neighborhoods that have historic roots.  I think it's going to be awesome.  They have one tour that takes place in the neighborhood my Dad grew up in, so I think that might be what I suggest we do.

I'm torn with my Mom.  She mentioned wanting to do something with Nancy and I, which eliminates my glass blowing class idea, since clearly I'm not going to take a 2 year old to blow glass.  It's hard.  I've taken a glass blowing class before.  Not to mention, it's full of glass and fires...I'm thinking instead of going to a pottery studio and doing something like that.  Nancy went to a paint your own pottery birthday party and is obsessed with the plate she made.  "Mommy, I use my fancy plate?"  every single time we eat.  I still got my Mom presents, but think that might be a cool idea for us to do as a little unit.

  • I bet it's advocare.  Does anyone here do advocare?  My babysitter is on it and asked to tell us about it and I firmly said no - hard to believe, I know!  I didn't want to blur our business relationship.

So I called my neighbor back that has the little girl that came over to play with W one day a few weekends ago.  She had called a couple times and I was feeling nervous that she'd want more from me than I really want these days......

Well, she wants to sit down with DH and I for 20 minutes to talk about a nutritional product that she sells :(

    PHUK.
Dude.  You're pregnant.  Is she seriously going to try to sell you Advocare or some shit like that?   Make sure you bake a big chocolate cake for when she comes over to talk to you.
I'm actually thinking that's my best out.  She wanted to come over Wed night and I said after Thanksgiving.  Now I'm wondering if it's worse to waste her time, or if it's nice to give her a chance.  I don't spend money on this kind of thing.
Just tell her that you don't spend money on that kind of thing and don't want to waste either of your time. No big deal. I'm sure she gets turned down all the time. If it annoys her, at least you don't have to worry about her being pushy about play dates that you don't want to do anyway.

Yep, meeting with her just extends the awkwardness and gives her an open window to keep bringing it up. Then you will have to tell her no anyway after the meeting. Avoid the awkwardness and wasted time and just say you aren't interested from the beginning.

What is that author's motive for that? Why would he do that?
He writes 'spirited' articles about honesty, technology, society - kind of hard to explain, a complainer of sorts.  They're usually strong opinion pieces or rants (cell phones, tipping, work ethic, where have our morals gone).  In this article he also bashed the realtor, her picture and sign, some other things about her listing.  The overall piece was about lies and passing the buck.  The fact that it was mailed to the buyer is absolutely baffling.  Who besides the author would have an advance copy AND know who was buying the house?  Hmm............

Tonight after work I get my mani/pedi then we're off to dinner and the city tree lighting. I'm so excited which means DS won't cooperate. Why is it when you have plans that sound so fun they ruin it with a crabby attitude?

We got about 8 inches of snow last night and the schools are closed. So far thats 2 snow days before Thanksgiving. If this keeps up the kids will be going until the middle of July.

I'm thinking of ordering some cinnamon rolls from WS for breakfast for Christmas. I've never had food from there before. Worth the $35? DH almost died when I told him the price then got excited because duh cinnamon rolls.

We get their Chocolate Croissants for Christmas morning. I love them.
    Dumb question - what's WS?

I smell a huge stinky lawsuit.

ETA:  maybe I will delete this later.
Yep, either way. The author for slander or the sellers for not disclosing - not all those things need to be disclosed though, I think only the roof would get the sellers in trouble.

ETA maybe I should put a trigger warning on this?  I mention a privacy violation when I was a young child.

When I was in preschool I had a 10-14ish yo boy touch my genitals (idk, I remember he was quite old).  My mom was in the next room over, checking on us frequently, and my brother and the older boy's cousin were playing with us.  I was pretty much just playing on my own in the same room with the boys.  They were making 'tents' and I wanted in of course, he did it in the tent while the other boys were adding more tent blankets.  Anyway, that is so freaking young.  I never said anything to anyone.  It didn't scar me.  I just feel like I know shit can happen and want to have good communication with W, and good checks in place to keep her safe.

  • It makes no sense at all, but if I ever say we are blessed, I mean it as some combination of fortunate and lucky and it has nothing to do with God in my case.  I usually just say fortunate or lucky, and I really don't say it to anyone other than DH.

I can see how someone repeatedly announcing they're so blessed/lucky/fortunate could just be distasteful because it's boastful.

    They're excellent.

I get to spend my day off tomorrow after delivering cheesecakes cleaning because if there is 1 cobweb or speck of dust my mom will insist on cleaning my house....ugh

I am just happy I do not have to go anywhere on Thursday and I can wear sweatpants all day :)

I seemed to only go to daycares with all girls, which is how DD is right now. I remember playing house and mommy and daddy and things still got weird with all girls. Two of my friends got in big trouble because we were playing house and one was mommy and one was baby. Well, they decided to breastfeed. Sometines innocent role play can be too much.
I'm trying to think how old I was..... maybe 3rd or 4th grade - it's a bit blurry?  Three of us girls were over for a sleepover and we were playing house.  Somehow we all ended up humping pillows, HA, and I can't quite recall if we actually touched each other, I think we did.

WELL....... I was pretty sure I "caught AIDS," and I remember breaking down to my mom and telling her I needed to go to the doctor for aids.  I told her I stepped on a rusty nail.  I was literally in fear of dying from a disease.  I think I felt pretty gross and guilty about sexuality after that, like forever.

So...... I think more than anything I want W to feel safe and comfortable with herself, and I want her to ask me questions.  Maybe situations like the above are normal, maybe they're not, I think they probably are because this was with girls all the same age and the exploration was all on the same plane (none of us had 'done' anything like that before).

My #1 goal is to keep W safe from predators, and to be a resource for her and not have her feel ashamed or grossed out by sexuality.  I don't feel a need to keep her 'safe' from situations like the above, because I feel that was probably natural exploration.  I don't really want her thinking she has AIDS for a year because of it though, haha, so hopefully she'll feel like she can be open with me.  I'm not sure how I'm going to accomplish any of that but damnit, that's my goal.

  • Does anyone know if Williams-Sonoma or PB do Black Friday deals?

  • I think when someone says that they are blessed, they are appreciative and aware of the positive parts of their life. I like the sentiment, personally.

TJ's croissants are the best!!! I love William Sonoma ones, their Kouign Amanns are ridiculously delicious, but for the price I think the Trader Joe equivalents are perfect.

The nearest TJ's is 6 hours ;( I'm pretty sure when I get the chance to go there I'll need about 4 coolers because I will buy all the things.

I'm want to get my parents a throw from there. Right now they are $99 + free shipping and I have a couple for $10 off. I should just order now. We got them a fireplace for their bedroom my mom's been drooling over so I figured a throw would be a nice add on. I actually ordered one for us last week and it's my new favorite blanket.

Yes! I actually got a code for 20% off on top of that in my email last week so I bit the bullet. I got it for about $80 shipped. I'm just going to bit the bullet. It's freaking $10 difference haha.

UO- people who talk about being blessed come off as bragging that God likes them better than others to me. I know it can be said in a humble way, but it usually always rubs me the wrong way. FFFC- I enjoy being home and spending time with the baby and DD, but I'm not upset about going back to work at 6 weeks. I can't imagine having twice this much time off. I'm sure I would feel differently if I worked FT though.
Maybe they are just trying to think positively? I feel pretty blessed right now, even though I've had a shittastic year and we still have a lot we are dealing with, I know it could be SO much worse.
Maybe it's just the announcing it. I feel blessed too. Example: I feel beyond blessed to have my kids. But I could never just randomly do a FB status update stating that. I feel like my BF going through infertility struggles would immediately think "why didn't God bless me with that?" I wouldn't want someone to feel that way about themselves so I wouldn't ever speak about being blessed. Or when people talk about being blessed with material things.
Yeah...but plenty of people post "I am so thankful" Thanksgiving posts and this is pretty much the same thing.  Some people say they're lucky; others think of it as counting their blessings.  It's about gratefulness, not a pissing contest of "who got what."  It's very sad about the person struggling with infertility, but I don't think it matters if I say "I'm so blessed" or "I am so thankful" or "I'm really lucky" to have my daughter when it comes that being a trigger for her.  "Why am I not lucky?  I'm thankful, too--why don't I have that thing to be thankful for?"  Fact is, it's an unfair and sucky situation.

Sorry, but I'm not going to censor "I'm blessed" because, well, I am.  And so is everyone else with access to Facebook to read that post.  Even if you have infertility issues.  (<--UO.)

  • DH just came home for lunch and he got the job he's been groomed for for 15 years.  :)  They are going to start the two year transition now!  We knew he was the successor, but we've been waiting for his boss to retire, which 7 years ago we were told it would be 5 years.  I think he's been feeling like he's in limbo and wanting to do something bigger with his career, instead of sitting around and waiting for someone to retire.  We just seriously started looking into another business opportunity for him two weeks ago.  He was so happy!

Should I make him a special dinner at home or take him out?

That's so exciting for both him and you! I'd take him out since Thanksgiving you'll be stuffed with all the homemade food. Plus bonus, no dishes.

Just before DH got his current job we were looking at career move and physical move for us. It's like the stars aligned and everything fell into place. It's such a great feeling! Congrats!

  • THT, just say no.  It's not rude to tell someone offering you a service that you're not interested in the service.  Just smile and keep saying "Thanks for thinking of us, but we're not interested!" and like LL says, don't give excuses or engage.  Have a segue strategy if it helps: "We're not interested, but I'd love to plan the next playdate for the girls!" or "Not for us, sorry.  Hey, what are your Thanksgiving plans?  Anything fun?"
