Ha, are they actually calling it Thanksgiving Sales? I think Black Friday is actually named for the financial books, so they could still have Black Friday sales and not really be tied to the US's Thanksgiving.

Though it's still associated with Thanksgiving--the day after was/is the traditional "start" of the holiday shopping season and the day retailers expected to go "into the black" financially.  

So if you don't have Thanksgiving...it's still kinda weird.  Does NZ (or, really, any country without Thanksgiving) have an officialunofficial "start" to the holiday shopping season?  Now I'm curious.

I think that is what they are trying to create. A big boom day and then a month of shopping to follow. With all the internet sales happening cross countries and having FB/Social Media to promote, it has to be hard to not offer savings across the board.

@melody921, I started piano at 5 and stopped taking lessons when I was probably 17.  I still play when I'm at my Mom's house where my piano lives.

I hated to practice when I was 5, but I remember at 6 I wanted to go and see Cats so bad (because duh, a play about Cats...) and my parents told me that if I could learn to play the easy version of 'Memory' they would take me.  I had that sucker learned in 3 weeks.  It's not too young.  Especially if he has an interest.  :-)  

Ummm my goal in life from age 8-12 was 'Broadway dancer in Cats'. It's written on every school paper. I used to add a paw print to my name on tests and such because I thought someone 'big' would see them hah. The year I quit dance, the class I would've been in did a Cats medley. I'm still devastated inside.

@Hyaline Do it! Is it suzuki?  I started just before I was 3, and will probably start Sophia next year. Kids learn so fast, they have more physical flexibility, and suzuki teaches kids music the same way they'd learn language.

My BIL got engaged tonight! Now MIL, me and my new SIL will all have the same first and last name. So weird.

The ones that Hamish bought back from his trip over there. They make my tongue tingle and my throat itch, too. The regular sized bars and the mini ones in the mixed bag of candy both taste revolting. You're right, American chocolate is sub-par.  Luckily we have access to chocolates from a lot of other countries.  Hershey's bars are good in smores... I've tried making them with cadbury bars, but you need a thin enough chocolate for all of the melty goodness.  Dumb question, do you do s'mores in NZ?  I feel like it's hard to find big fluffy marshmallows in a lot of other countries...

Funny story...my boss and her husband bought a new house this summer & before they closed they got a call from their broker stating that she had all this outstanding child support and that it was going to negatively impact their loan, etc.  Come to find out, this other Amy had a husband also named Eric, they're the same age & lived 2 towns apart.  Obviously it got straightened out, but it was pretty funny at the time.

Help me out here....my nephew is 9.  He has 2 little brothers 4 and 5 who are not my brother's.  My nephew's Mom & her other boys come to Christmas at my sister's house (we take in all the strays in our family...my niece's high school boyfriend still comes over from time to time...) and I don't know if I should get them presents this year too.

The Mom got DH & I a gift card last year for $25 for a restaurant, and I got her a GC to Loft because she had just started a new job.  

My Mom is getting presents for the boys, but since I haven't seen them since last Christmas, I don't know if I should or not.  WWS12 do?

OMG Whittakers is so gross. Sorry, I don't prefer Hershey's either, but ick...Whittakers.  

Whatever the big German brand is is gross, too.  My friend brings me some every time she's overseas and I have to force a thanks and eat some with her because, yuck.

 

I"m spoiled by local chocolatiers where I live. So much (expensive) nom.

I'd maybe do something small, like a book or a B&N gift card.  That's what I do for my cousin's kids--I can't keep up with what they like, but I can pick a good book or give them $15 to get their own.

@MelsaX, I agree about Hershey's. It leaves a gross, puke-y aftertaste. TJ's for the win!!!

We are out running errands before we leave for the holidays. My hair hasn't been washed in forever, so it's in a messy stylish top bun. My hair tie just broke, but LUCKILY I have a "sleep" mask in my purse, so I've fashioned it into a hair tie for the time being.

I stopped at the local bakery and got a super fresh maple bar. Oh. My. And then I remembered that the superintendent's bringing us Starbucks. Not just coffee, you get to order whatever you want. Best day. And I'm only here for 3 1/2 more hours!

Great idea! My SIL got B one for his birthday. The weather turned here pretty quickly but I know he'll love it next spring and for a couple of years.

I told her in my original response that I had notified a friend of her listing and she also purchased. I didn't use names so weird that she would use mine. Oh well. I was really fishing for her to just give me the second as 1) that is what the listing said and 2) I referred someone else to her. I'm still emailing with her about what kind of deal she will give me on the second. She better eat the shipping cost as her mistake.

I have a student who I had to report to our behavior intervention team today.  She's just a bit unhinged and I've started feeling sort of uneasy when I interact with her.  She's always crying, she's always in crisis and we talk about the same thing literally every single day because she seems to not remember what we talked about yesterday.  

As you guys know, IM NOT A COUNSELOR!  I'm an ADVISOR.  Totally different.  She won't talk to our counselor, she hates everyone in financial aid, student services & the actual nursing department.  She talks like she thinks everyone is out to get her.  It's just odd.  

And she's always calling me kiddo or sweetie.  I realize I'm 20+ years younger than her, but it's still inappropriate.  I want today to be over now.

She agreed to price match so I would send an extra $8.49 but she can only send another number 1 since they will both be single orders. Now I don't know what to do. I hate going through the process of returning things but it is cuter to have the 1,2 set.

She places the order with the distributor and it comes from them. So all single orders come with a 1 all double orders come with a 2. She can send me the set but then I would have to return the single that is already on the way. I asked for an additional discount because I hate returning things.

ETA: and I checked aliexpress.com to see if that was her "distributor" and it wasn't on there.

I keep eating a lot then feeling sick.    Last night at dinner I said, "this is the last time, it's not worth it"

So I overate lunch.  If I eat more than 1/3 of a meal, it is misery.  But I keep doing it.

I'm not gonna lie, I need to get the fawk off here.  I have a list of things that I have to get done before the holiday, and I have been getting one task done an hour.  I don't wanna work  

But if I decide to let everyone go early, I will be sitting here alone because I still have work.  I am so sleepy!

Ugggghhhh we had some students like this.  The worst was that we had an advisor who totally enabled and encouraged students to come with her with personal problems.  She thought she was a psychologist or something...and of course she wasn't.  It drove me nuts.  I actually stopped what I was doing, intervened at the front desk, and walked students over to counseling services on occasion before they could see her.
