TTC PSA ;-)

So my mom let me in on this little secret a while back and I though I'd share. Her Korean OBGYN (old school doctor) told her (YEARS ago) that if you want to have a girl, then douche with vinegar water, and if you want to have a boy, then you douche with baking soda water.  Now, I'm not sure if this is a sure fire way to get what you want as far as gender goes, but it worked for my mom 4/4 times.
And I have read in different OB articles here and there that "girl sperm" do better in a more slightly acidic environment, while "boy sperm" do better in the opposite.

Take this with a grain of salt by the way. Just found it very interesting and thought I'd share with y'all. :-)  (mostly bc this board is so slow. Lol)

  • If you want a girl, Shettles suggests not having  an orgasm for the same reason - apparently it makes the environment more alkaline and that's better for X sperm. For a boy he suggests the woman O before or at the same time as the man. So there may be something to the theory if there are multiple methods suggesting it, but no way in heck am I douchinng with either vinegar or baking soda.No. Way.

  • I'm in the no food in the vag club but when I did my women's health rotation we had a woman who was group b strep positive so she put garlic cloves in her vagina because she read online that it would kill the bacteria!
  • For the record ladies, I'm not suggesting it. Lol. But to be clear- she never said douche with straight vinegar or baking soda- it's "supposed to be" a very very diluted mixture. Like a tsp of either in the bottle of water. And this Korean OBGYN was like- off the boat old world, old school medicine type woman! So weird.

  • I will say that yogurt in the vag is a very effective cure for a yeast infection.  And garlic in the vag is supposed to help with GBS during pregnancy.  Those are the only two foods I would ever stick there, I think.

Here I've heard several doctors recommend putting yogurt on a tampon and inserting it when on antibiotics to avoid a yeast infection. I think that one I might be willing to try.

  • LOL at the idea that sticking (plain) yogurt in your vagina would somehow be unsterile.  I mean, it's sterile enough to stick in your mouth, right?

And the YI meds are not safe to stick in your mouth.  I'm going with the item that's safe via any route of entry and which doesn't require an extra trip to the store.

  • No on the yoplait or any other pasteurized yogurt.  Plain raw milk yogurt with nothing added.

If you're honestly curious on how you insert it - some people fill up a tampon and insert it that way.  Other people freeze it before inserting.  You can also just use your hands - scoop and apply.

  •  Frozen sounds particularly horrible.
Supposedly it's soothing for the itch.

What is the consensus on sour cream. Isn't it pretty much the same as plain yogurt?
Nah that is for potatoes, I got to draw the line some where!
    Agree

I feel like I need to discuss the chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda to bring this thread back full circle....

  • So, how does one insert the Yoplait (or YoCrunch if feeling feisty) into the vag? With a turkey baster?

I need a clear mental image.
    :-/
In case this wasn't answered later and before this thread gets into more awesomeness and I forget -- here what I've heard recommended is that you put it on a tampon and insert. I also wonder how it gets out, though. @WifeofAdam, this may be devolving into waaay too much TMI, but since you have done the yogurt YI treatment before, how does it get out? Or does it just stay in there (ok, that's a weird mental image of my vagina eating the yogurt, but then what? sending it up to the stomach via a different route?)?

Sorry, maybe this is all covered starting on page 3. now i'll go look.

I need to know @AmyGardner430's position on vag yogurt.  Can you combine the words, like go-gurt?  Can it be vagurt?

I can speak to @AmyGardner430‌'a position on vag yogurt. But I do feel like if we're going to combine the words, it needs to be pronounced "vag-gurt." Which my phone just autocorrected to "vag-hurt." :-/

  • @kelly321

The yogurt just sort of absorbs and does its job.  Some of it comes out, but as DC mentioned, it's not nearly as messy as some of the other treatments.

As far as smelling like spoiled dairy goes - when you eat it, you don't smell like spoiled dairy.  Same idea.

The reason the yogurt is effective is because it contains some of the same bacteria that your vagina already contains.  This particular probiotic kills yeast.  You could eat the yogurt (like doctors recommend when taking an antibiotic), but it would take longer to reach the vagina and it isn't as effective.  Inserting it vaginally puts it right at the source so it can start killing the yeast.

dumb question but don't the naturally occurring sugars in the yogurt cause a problem?  Even if you are using strictly pure yogurt, aren't there a fair number of naturally occurring sugars?  I would think that would contribute to yeast overgrowth, not resolve it.
I think the beneficial bacteria actually need some sugar for fermentation and to do their job.  When the bacteria interact with the sugar they attack the yeast and help restore the pH balance.  I don't think it would work without some sugar (obviously, too much sugar would be counter-productive, but I think there needs to be some present in order to work).  There's probably a delicate balance needed to work.

Now that I'm sitting here thinking about this, I wonder if inserting a probiotic pill would be as effective and less messy??  Hmm....

Welp, I can attest that this theory is incorrect ;)
