hi, I'm new here. I believe that I was about 4 weeks pregnant but I never got a positive on a test. I had all the symptoms and they were very different than I had ever experienced, so I knew it was only time that stood between me and a BFP. I was max 11dpo when my brown spotting turned red and overnight I was kept up with INTENSE cramping and clotted blood half the night. I've called my doctor and spoke to a good friend that is a midwife and L&D nurse and they both assume early miscarriage and that my levels just weren't high enough to get a positive on a test. I'm really frustrated as I have no idea how it would have happened, plus the uncertainty of knowing if I were truly pregnant is nagging. We just started trying this month so I have no idea what it means for us from here on.

That does not equal 4 weeks pregnant?
Edit: I am sorry that you are going through this and are confused. Definitely suggest reading the newbie blog at the top of the page and download FF and start temping if you aren't already doing so.
Welcome.

If you were truly pregnant, you didn't do anything to cause a miscarriage. They happen, they suck, and it's incredibly rare to know why.
As for where to go from here, the best advice I have is to read the newbie blog, start temping so you know when you are ovulating, and continue having sex when you are fertile.
Good luck.

Short answer: Possibly. Longer answer: Probably not. Home tests now are extremely sensitive (I've had two early miscarriages with numbers less than 10 and home tests would pick up a faint line) and all of the symptoms in the world don't mean you're pregnant. If you have enough symptoms to feel them, and they are actually pregnancy symptoms and not period symptoms (both caused by the same hormones) then you would probably be able to turn a test. Your cycles can change all the time. So can your periods. My periods often only have a few hours of really heavy flow, about 8-16 hours. And that's just my period.
However, if it turns out to have been an early miscarriage (normally that could be a chemical pregnancy, meaning the pregnancy was only confirmed by chemical means, but this one was not), they are extremely common. Most women who have them go on to have healthy pregnancies. Two things to remember as you start out: Your body is not a machine, things change. Don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you. I wish you well moving forward.

I think it's a far stretch to assume that because you got your period the first month of TTC that it must be an early miscarriage. All the symptoms in the world mean nothing, and you're likely symptom spotting because you're hopeful.
Is it possible you had a chemical pregnancy? Sure, and if that is truly the case then I'm sorry. But if I had to make an educated guess, I'm guessing your period was heavier than usual because sometimes it happens and you noticed all these "symptoms" because you were actively looking for them.
There is a good chance you will never know for sure. However, implantation happens between 7-10dpo, and you stated that you were 11dpo so I think what happened is that your period came earlier than you were expecting. If you are pregnant enough to have symptoms you are pregnant enough to turn a test positive.

I'm sorry, but if you didn't turn a test positive, it's not likely you were pregnant. Sometimes we just have months where our PMS symptoms are different or stronger than the norm. Symptoms mean nothing without a positive test. I had a miscarriage (chemical pregnancy) around 4 weeks and I had two days of positive tests before I started spotting. It sounds like you got your period.
I'm sorry, but if a test never picked up a pregnancy, you were probably not pregnant. Home pregnancy tests pick up a very small amount of hcg. I see nothing in your description that would show you were pregnant. You got your period at 12 dpo? That's a perfectly normal time to get your period. I don't think you are doing yourself any favors by convincing yourself that you must have been pregnant. I would really recommend a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility, which will teach you a TON about your cycles. Good luck! FYI, you probably had all those symptoms either because your body was finally producing it's own hormones after being on bcp or you were just hyper aware since you were ttc.
I experienced implantation spotting an entire week before my period. I've been regular 28 days since I was 14 (I'm 27 now) and I never spot and never start early. I have been off of birth control for a year. This isn't like period bleeding, it's dissimilar in many ways. I think it's entirely possible that I was pregnant without reading on a home test, as they aren't as sensitive as blood tests. If I ovulated the day that we had unprotected sex, then I would have only been 9 dpo when I first started bleeding red. That's quite early to get a BFP on a home test. My period isn't due until Friday, so I would have been an entire week early after an otherwise perfectly regular lifetime of periods. I guess I can't really know at this point, though.
Hi and thanks for your reply! I'm actually not due for my period until Friday and it's never early. I also never spot, and I am about 90% sure I felt implantation as well as had textbook implantation spotting for four days before I had any red blood. My periods are usually pretty heavy, so I'm not surprised by that at all. It was the fever, heavy cramping which made it impossible to sleep and couldn't be reduced by pain medication that made me worry. My bleeding now is much different than a normal period.
Also, I'm not just hoping against everything that suddenly I was pregnant this first month, I just paid close attention to my body, which is suggested by all sorts of forums and medical journals when Ttc. I also consulted my doctor and midwife friend, like I said, who heard the same symptoms that I wrote here and both had the same opinion that I likely miscarried too early to Turn a test.
I'm not quite sure why you want to convince yourself that you were pregnant and had a miscarriage. It's not exactly a fun club to belong to.
Lurk here and you will see several posts from newbies convinced they are pregnant because they have all the symptoms in the world and they are "late" (but they are never late!) but keep getting BFNs. Most of them are not pregnant either.

I really am sorry that you are going through this uncertainty. But you really have no reason to believe you were pregnant. Actually, hpts are just as sensitive as blood tests. You had an early period. That's not unusual. No matter how many exact 28 day cycles you had, your body can change it up at any time. Please read the book I recommended and you will learn so much. Many many women have cycles that are a couple days longer or shorter than usual and it does not mean they were pregnant. And not every symptom you have must have been caused by pregnancy, maybe you ate something bad or got sick or stressed? I'm unsure about why you are trying to convince yourself you had a miscarriage.
Right, I first had implantation bleeding on what might have been 7dpo and spotted pure brown for 4 days after that before it turned red. Sorry I didn't clarify that earlier!

Let's do a little menstrual math. You said if the day you had unprotected sex was the day you ovulated, you were 9 dpo when you started bleeding red. So the spotting started 4 days before you started bleeding red, which is 5 dpo, before you could have implanted --> not implantation bleeding.
But here you are saying you were 11 dpo when you started bleeding red, which if you had sex 9 days earlier, means you had unprotected sex 2 days after you ovulated --> not possible to be pregnant.
So either way, it is really, really unlikely that your spotting is implantation bleeding. And much more likely that you ovulated earlier than you normally do and had a heavy period.
Edited for spelling.

Fine, OP. We don't know your lyfe and you were pregnant for sure. Obviously a special snowflake like yourself could never have an odd cycle. I wish I could diagnose my own pregnancy based on feelings, I hate buying HPTs.
Ok so, I'm really not sure why I posted on here! I was hoping for feedback on moving on from this, whatever it is that happened to me. Instead I'm getting a lot of unprofessional opinions on whether I was actually pregnant. I could have written a book on everything that happened but wanted to keep it short to get to the point. I guess that was my oversight by not covering myself for what the Internet had to say!
I think this time I'll leave it to the professionals and trust what my doctor and experienced nurse and midwife friend has to say. Thanks girls!

Ok, first, if you were on BCPs for most of your life then that is why you have had in the past perfect 28 day cycles. Our bodies suck and will randomly change up on us.
Next, if your doctor told you that you had an early miscarriage over the phone based on what you have told us, please find a new doctor. S/he is either just saying what you want to hear or is horrible.
To reiterate what others have said, STOP for the love of all things holy trying to convince yourself you had a miscarriage. If anything, I would be telling myself "it sucks I am out this month because my period was early and weird, shucks."
Andplusalso, when replying to others comments either quote them or tag them so we can figure out who you are talking to.

You want support for what happened to you? For your early period?
You could write a book of symptoms, but unless it included a positive hpt, I can't really feel sorry for your fake miscarriage...
By your logic, every period is a possible miscarriage and I have had dozens of them.

1) Implantation bleeding/implantation spotting lasts maybe hours, not days.
2) A straight up yes/no pregnant/not pregnant blood test at a clinic or hospital is actually probably less accurate, especially for an early loss, than a HPT. Most labs have a certain level of hCG set for what they will consider pregnant (at mine it's around 25). So unless you were able to get your doctor/midwife/whatever friend to prescribe you a quantitative beta to be run, it's unlikely you would get any other response from a needless blood test.
3) Your doctor/friend/midwife/whatever can only go off of what you told them. Which I'm sure at this point you embellished to suit your needs. No decent doctor is going to tell you that you miscarried without medical evidence. Possibly they told you what you seem to have wanted to hear.
4) The miscarriage club is not a cool club. Why on earth do you want to convince yourself of it? You had an early heavy period. You just started TTC. You don't need to rush to a doctor for everything. Even if it was a miscarriage, there is absolutely fuck all that can be or would be done about it. It's a horrible thing, but one chemical pregnancy, as painful as they could be, doesn't necessarily effect anything about fertility.

Your "professional" doctor would say "sorry, you were not pregnant". If you did not turn a test positive, you were NOT pregnant. And seriously, you sound like you are wishing this upon yourself. I had a chemical pregnancy in March and followed it up with a loss at 8 weeks in Sept. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, it truly sucks. No one here is giving you "unprofessional" advice...they are giving you REALISTIC advice. You are just choosing to not accept it. LAME.

OP without a positive pregnancy test you have no reason to believe you were pregnant. I have had two chemicals and have had home pregnancy tests pick up a positive when my hcg was as low as 6. Chemicals suck and I'm not sure why you are convincing yourself you had one. You know what a very reasonable explanation for your negative tests and period? That you were not pregnant.
You are completely insensitive to those of us who have actually experienced a loss.
I completely agree with everything you said. The original post is so offensive to people who have actually had a loss. And logically you need to actually be pregnant for a loss to occur.
OP, it sucks to get your period when you are trying to conceive, but it is not even close to getting a positive pregnancy test and then losing it. Talking yourself into believing you were pregnant and had a loss is a really shitty thing to do to yourself. It doesn't seem like you have the emotional maturity to accept that though.
WELP. IT'S THAT TIME AGAIN. Sneezing okay with everyone?

This just makes me angry, as I am sure it does many of others who have had losses. Why the hell are you trying to convince yourself that you had a miscarriage? They fucking suck big time. You had negative tests, you were not pregnant.
Home tests are actually just as sensitive as blood. In fact, with one of my losses I tested positive on two different tests, and negative with bloodwork the following day.
You had your period, and it was heavier than normal.
I totally agree. MC sucks, so so badly. I tested positive on 2 different tests as well on a Friday, by Monday seeing my Dr nothing showed up. MC's are not something you want to try to convince yourself about. You weren't pregnant and probably just had a late cycle. Be thankful for that and not having to deal with a loss. However, don't let whatever this is/was get to you. Just keep trying. Definitely read he newbie blog and sign up for FF. GL

I'm an experienced nurse and medical professional, and here's my diagnoses: 1. You weren't pregnant because the math doesn't add up. BFN = NOT pregnant, as much as you wish it to be otherwise. 2. You're acting like an ass by coming on this board and making up a MC. 3. Medical professionals can learn and study as much as they want but their knowledge and expertise will never equal that of a person that has been experiencing the issue for as long as some of these ladies have, and any good doctor, nurse, midwife, whatever will tell you that same thing. Here's my prescription: Listen to what the board is telling you, and move on. You can pay me in wine and other delicious alcoholic drinks, you're welcome.

Edit: I am sorry that you are going through this and are confused. Definitely suggest reading the newbie blog at the top of the page and download FF and start temping if you aren't already doing so.
Welcome.
Hysteroscopy 10/28/14 - septum removed
HSG 10/31/14 - All Clear!
As for where to go from here, the best advice I have is to read the newbie blog, start temping so you know when you are ovulating, and continue having sex when you are fertile.
Good luck.

Is it possible you had a chemical pregnancy? Sure, and if that is truly the case then I'm sorry. But if I had to make an educated guess, I'm guessing your period was heavier than usual because sometimes it happens and you noticed all these "symptoms" because you were actively looking for them.

FYI, you probably had all those symptoms either because your body was finally producing it's own hormones after being on bcp or you were just hyper aware since you were ttc.

October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
Also, I'm not just hoping against everything that suddenly I was pregnant this first month, I just paid close attention to my body, which is suggested by all sorts of forums and medical journals when Ttc. I also consulted my doctor and midwife friend, like I said, who heard the same symptoms that I wrote here and both had the same opinion that I likely miscarried too early to Turn a test.
Lurk here and you will see several posts from newbies convinced they are pregnant because they have all the symptoms in the world and they are "late" (but they are never late!) but keep getting BFNs. Most of them are not pregnant either.

You could write a book of symptoms, but unless it included a positive hpt, I can't really feel sorry for your fake miscarriage...
By your logic, every period is a possible miscarriage and I have had dozens of them.
2010: Infertility
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)

GL

Nope. I know I'm now 13 DPO because I'm charting. I also know I'm not pregnant because I'm charting. It's just AF being a tease for a solid week before she shows up here. You seem like you've done a lot of research, OP. But wherever you are getting your facts from is bullshit.
