Flu Shot

I am going into my doctor's walkin today to get my flu shot. I normally never get one and will admit getting it in my first trimester is scary. Everything I've read in medical journals says it's completely safe and if I waited until I was out of my first trimester it would be January already. This was a hard decision for me, but I got the flu last year despite my best efforts (I'm a germophobe). Anyone else getting one soon or struggling with this decision?

  • I have never had one before so I didn't even think of this.  I will see what the doctor says at my appointment in 2 weeks.

  • I've been wondering about this.  My appt isn't for a few more weeks.  I wonder if I should call my dr and see what they say.  H and I have never gotten the flu shot before.
  • I got my flu shot after my CP last month. Working in a school, there is no way I could go without it.

Now-pregnancy- is definitely the time to get it. Refer to @mistabinx 's links.

  • Got mine during the 2ww. I work in infectious diseases and totally agree with @beepity. During the swine flu outbreak pregnant women were among the hardest hit in terms of complications.

  • I have to get my shot for work and my pcm said if I hadn't come in earlier to get it, he would have discussed why it is so important now that I'm pregnant.
  • Well, for the record, I wasn't avoiding getting the flu shot- I had no doubt it was very important. I was merely concerned about first trimester vs. others.
I went to my obgyn and got one. I wanted to make sure it was preservative free.
  • I will be getting mine at my first appointment on the 17th.

  • Dammit, when I went to see my doctor (not my OB) about my thyroid issues, she told me not to get a flu shot... Said she wouldn't want to inject me with the live virus. Now I'm confused :-/

The nasal spray is the only version of the live virus. Talk to your ob! Mine definitely recommends it.
  • @kayandtony4‌ I think I will call tomorrow and ask. Thanks for the info!

  • Most of the board are pro-vaccines and flu shots. A small minority are not. The majority will jump their shit, call them selfish/stupid/conspiracy theorists/whatever and say they will sue if their kid cannot get vaxed for whatever reason and gets sick from a other child who's parents chose to not vax. We have seen it played out hundreds of times and not once has anyone said "you know, you're right" on either side.

  • I will be getting my flu shot, DS will as well. I work in a hospital and with so many sick people coming in, I'm not going to risk it. My kid goes to nursery school, puts everything in his mouth, plays with germy kids, and touches everything, I think he needs it. DH works in health care (paramedic) and refuses to get it, I'm making sure me and DS have ours because I don't want to risk him bringing it home to us. I think he's being selfish and should get it for the sake of his family, but if he won't do it I'm going to do everything possible to protect us.

  • I never wanted to argue, I simply gave my opinion and you told me to not be "selfish" and get the flu shot. I don't believe in them and you do just as some believe and swear by Jesus and others don't. It's a personal decision.

I'd agree with your personal decision if you weren't potentially causing harm by it. This isn't the same as religion. Also that study you posted is over 10 years old and the scientific community considers it invalid. Just do some research. Vaccinations save lives.
I guarantee I have done more research than those who blindly hand up their newborns for hepb vaccines.
If you could just admit there is risk and stop pretending it's some Miracle cure. Majority of the diseases that are basically gone were declining before vaccines were even around thanks to clean water and sanitation etc. It's common sense. Until someone you love is harmed by a vax then you might realize oh wow these aren't full proof and completely safe.

Every person who is anti vaccine always guarantrees that. They're the only ones that aren't sheep.

No one denied there are risks to vaccinating. The point is the benefits significantly outweigh the risks. This has been proven. And the idea that people are being paid to produce vaccines is a negative is ludicrous. Of course people get paid for doing their job.
