Rib Pain

I figured since the lower back pain thread got such helpful responses yesterday I would make a rib pain one.

Anyone else experiencing this on a regular basis already? Mine is mainly contained to the right side and I can pretty much pin point the ribs that hurt. I know my uterus is already up really high in my rib cage but I'm pretty sure my baby is laying transverse right around my belly button so I don't know if its a body part or not. Also I know its not my gallbladder.

Dr's office says its totally normal and the only thing to do is take tylenol. Anyone have any better solutions then that? Sitting up straight, not slouching and sitting back reclined/laying down on my left side helps. Any other suggestions?

Re: Rib Pain

  • I find that switching positions often helps the most so far.

  • I have had this the past month or so... sooo painful!  My doctor and MFM just told me it was normal.  Extra pillows and switiching sides frequently helps some. If I overdo it during the day at all I am in so much pain at night.  One of my babies is right up in my rib cage so there is no getting him to move over since his brother is on the left side.

    hang in there!

  • I'm going to the chiropractor Friday for rib and back pain. Hoping it helps because lord knows Tylenol doesn't do crap!
  • Stretching. Laying flat. I try to eat smaller portions when I do eat, only because the pressure on the ribs seems to be worse when I eat too much. I was like that in my last pregnancy. Things get all squished up in there & random displaced body parts, like your stomach or intestines end up in places like your ribs. I feel your pain!

It helped alleviate the pain, but it didn't get rid of it completely. Mostly because part of the pain is brought on by my son snuggling under my ribs at night.

  • I had a lot of rib pain early on and when I started lap swimming regularly it went away. But I was pretty out of shape to begin with so I think all the moving was just stressing my muscles; I'm not sure about later in pregnancy.
