UO: I don't think that earthquake drills are necessary to do every few months if you aren't in an area that is prone to them.

Brought to you by: this morning's earthquake drill.

At our monthly meeting last week HR asked if everyone knew what to do during an earthquake. Someone shouted out "Stop, drop, and roll!" Everyone started laughing, but I think the person was serious. It's a good thing we don't get big earthquakes around here!

Now, see, I don't think they're a bad idea on occasion, but when we have a drill every quarter (approx. 3 months), I think we can afford to have earthquake drills a little less often.

    ......ETA home made quote box......

Agreed, I think twice a year would suffice. Clearly once a year isn't cutting it where I work ;)

I don't like movies. They're too long, too graphic/emotional/formulaic etc, and I think they're a waste of time and money.

Maybe you're watching the wrong movies.

I'm open to suggestions.I have ADHD though so any movie longer than an hour and a half is hard for me to sit through. I start out playing 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon in the middle of the movie and before long I'm asking Google about the life span of squirrels. Maybe this is the real reason I don't like them.

You're awesome!  I'm not downplaying your ADHD at all but it made me laugh because I have similar problems.  Though I can focus most of the time, I get distracted VERY easily.  I once told my husband I should learn to count cards and he laughed at me. His response was "two/ clubs, Ace of Spades, three/diamonds... oooo!! Pretty blue dress!"  Yeah - that sounds about right. Off to Google the lifespan of squirrels

The part about the lifespan of squirrels really made me laugh. I also have ADHD but I am okay at sitting through movies as long as they're interesting to me. I have a hard time paying attention to what people are saying tho because you could be talking to me and I'll look at you like I'm paying attention, but I'll totes be thinking about something completely different from what you're talking about. Then once I realize I'm doing that I'll feel quilty. And if I'm cleaning my house I have a hard time starting in one area and finishing before moving to the next. I'll be let's say picking things off the floor then go to grab a vacuum, see maybe the counter needs wiped off and totally forget I needed to vacuum, so I'll clean the counter and notice something in some other room and just bounce all around.

Speaking of holidays: Halloween is Halloween. I don't mind cities or neighborhood posting hours because it gives me a timeline (ours are 5:30 to 8:30), and I get if there's a downtown or merchant's trick-or-treat that needs to be on a weekend. But I do not get cities or neighborhoods just deciding that they get to change the date of Halloween. When did that start? I don't want to get all 'when I was a kid' because I get that a lot of things are different and good for reasons (carseat laws for an example) but I just think let's celebrate the day on the day.

Not as much a problem this year, although some people have tried to change TOT to Saturday because there's a homecoming game on Friday this year. Nope.

My town started this about 15 years ago...they'd make trick-or-treating on a weekend evening.

Have you heard of trunk-or-treating? I just found out about it this year.

    -------
    No!! What is this!?

I can't wait to have kids so I'm able to go trick or treating and eat their candy. No shame.

I first heard of trunk-or-treating in the small town I grew up in. Which is sad, because that's the probably the last place on Earth someone would mess with Halloween candy or kids out trick-or-treating. Of course, they love to freak out about everything there, so I guess shouldn't be too surprised.

I get the idea behind it, but it makes me really sad to think that's what we've come to as a society.

Oh and I don't like pears...it's like eating an apple injected with sand

Bolded. Not unpopular. Waiting for the day someone says they hate all food.

I'm confused...are you saying my post doesn't fit the thread? I was only saying that because a lot if people were talking about certain foods...

Your post fits fine, the bolded was odd since everyone has this same sentiment about food. At least that is how I took it.

  • UO: People who get hitched at the JOP and then have a big PPD/At home reception don't bother me anymore. If you want to put on a big ass, miserably hot dress and pay out the ass for a catered meal and open bar after the fact, you go girl.
My UO: I would have killed to have a courthouse wedding, full stop (family stuff prevented me from having a courthouse ceremony). I'm not a "wedding" girl.
This is exactly why we had a destination wedding, so we could drastically cut the guest list. 32 people is all that came, I could have only the people that I wanted there. Had my grandmother had her way it would have been here in a church with 350 our "closest" family and friends...

  • Uggs, I hate them, Who is going to spend $150 on something designed to wear in the winter among the snow, slush and water that you can destroy?
I don't own a pair, but I heard there is something you can do to "water-proof" them right?
They make a waterproofing spray. I bought them when I moved to Vermont for college and needed to walk 15 minutes in bitter cold weather to class. I have had the same pair for 9 years and they look pretty good, thanks to the spray. I spray them every year and haven't had any leaks.

UO: Apparently, I feel the same way about UGG boots and mini skirts that other people feel about leggings. Every summer, without fail, I see girls and women running around with their cute little mini skirts and UGG boots. I'm sure your boots are very comfortable, but I really think you should leave them for winter.

Do you live in 2004?  Can I come visit?  I miss life before Facebook.

Apparently I do because every summer I see them everywhere. Should I mention I live in Florida, which in my mind makes it even more ridiculous?

I live in California. I can't tell you the amount of mini skirts and crotch shorts being worn with Uggs. I think it's dumb.

I'm about to be a hypocrite but hear me out - I totally agree with you here. I think trick or treating should be on a Tuesday if that's where it falls.

However, my UO is that I actually wish we had more holidays like Memorial Day or Labor Day where it's like, "the last Monday" or "the first Monday" of [insert month]. It's so annoying to me when like, the Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday. Can't we just all have a three day weekend and do the fireworks and grill out on a long weekend?

**** fucking mobile quote box **
I'm going to say no to your having 4th of July on a designated day of the week. It's 4th of July for a reason! I'm just sayin'.

  • I HATE onions. The fact that people set them out to attract the bacteria in their homes makes me hate them even more. Yuck!
What? People do this? On purpose?
It actually works! I am a crunch granola girl though, so I totally understand its not for everyone. Basically if you feel yourself getting sick you cut up an onion and place it on your bedside table before bed. Supposedly it sucks up the toxins and magically heals you :)

  • I've asked like 2 questions in the AMA threads, both to posters I know. I don't have a lot of bumping time these days and I'm much more interested in regs than newbs, to be perfectly honest. Meh. And yep, Nelly started the AMA...then disappeared. Except oh wait, she's back under a different name on parenting. Wonder why she hasn't come back to TTGP after starting up a regular thread...hmmmm.
Didn't Nelly leave for really personal reasons? She took a bump break before she left completely. IDK about her being back or not but I wouldn't judge her if there are reasons why she isn't on this board. Regular thread or not.
