MOTN Check-In

Re: MOTN Check-In

  • LO and DD1 are FINALLY asleep. Tomorrow is LOs hearing test because she failed hers at the hospital. I have to get up at freaking 4:30. I should probably put on my clothes now, I should probably get the girls dressed too. And sleep in the car. In the parking lot of the audiologist. I was never late until I had my babies. Now it's my new normal. :) lol, but on the inside I'm crying!!

3 hours of sleep + flu shot = sleepy mama. Please LO, sleep better tonight because I don't know if I can do another short nighter of rest.

  • 1:45 here. LO woke at 1:00 for MOTN feeding but then only took 2 oz and fell asleep. He is out cold., I tried changing his diaper and he is still out! Wondering if he will even make it to 4:15? We've had workers in replacing AC real air unit/furnace and installing ductless AC/heat upstairs for last 4 days. I haven't been able to sleeping or nap---I'm one tired mama.

  • First night home. Last night was fucking miserable - I had a meltdown after hours of cluster feeding but not really feeding just dozing and using my boob as a pacifier and squalling bloody murder anywhere else. The amazing nurses took him for a couple hours (normally the hospital's policy is rooming in) but we both had major sleep dep hangovers today. I'm trying to be patient with him but LO keeps breaking a good (as far as I can tell) latch to cry and root, and won't relatch even with the nipple shoved in his wide open mouth. I tried looking it up but everyone blames oversupply & my milk isn't in yet so THAT'S not it. Anyone know wtf to do for him? I know he was big & he's gonna be hungry but how do I help when he's so busy complaining of hunger that he wont eat? (FX that AmyG* shows up with the solution, like the BFing fairy godmother.)

  • First MOTN check in for me. It's almost midnight here, but I haven't actually gone to bed yet. LO woke up to nurse, so after changing and feeding her I'm trying to get her to go back to sleep. White noise is doing its magic right now  :) I'm hoping for a good sleep stretch now because it's been a trying day. DD1 is sick, now DD2 seems congested, and FI is on his way home from the hospital after getting a piece of short rib stuck in his esophagus. I need sleep  I-)

  • DS woke up at midnight. Latched on for a bit then got lazy with his swallows. Which in turn made me frustrated, which made him frustrated. Finally got him to eat and then he woke up again at 2. Now I just put him down, but I'm starving so I made a pb sandwich, hopefully he lasts until at least five.

I pump using the simple wishes hands free bustier, so first I set up and start the pump. Then once that's going I lay her down on the boppy next to me and hold the bottle with my left hand so I can make any pump adjustments with my right. It's not the smoothest of maneuvers but it gives me a little extra time. The thing I don't like is it's a pain to burp her

  • I think it was @bainidhedub‌ who was asking about latching. I'm no AmyG*, and I don't know your situation, but my LO wouldn't latch/still is hard to latch properly because I have "immature" nipples. They come out when stimulated, but go back down quickly, this making it hard for LO to stay latched. Nipple shields so helped me and saved my piece of mind, especially when I was in the hospital. They also help because you can kind of see if anything is coming out.
  • I read this thread every night but never make it to the end. Baby hasn't slept more than an hour since midnight (it's ten til 6)...

She had her 2 week pedi appt today and they did the heel prick. I have never seen her cry so hard or for so long. I really think the drama of the day is having an effect on her sleep tonight. Doctor said she's gaining weight really well so she's good to sleep through the night... I just wish there was a way to tell get that! This has been the toughest night so far. I'm also parched because I left my water in my bedroom when I brought her out to walk around and try and get her to sleep, and now she's nursing again. How the hell do i get this baby to sleep?!
  • I am a sleep failure. Tonight was crap. LO would not sleep. I was up with her from 9 to 1:30 before I gave up, tossed my pillow, and laid her in bed next to me.

Usually I'd rely on DH for help, but DD1 was up over and over, and he hadn't slept either. She's in bed with us, too, of course.

I feel so discouraged. I've been determined to not create another bad sleeper, but here I go. I feel like she'll never sleep on her own again now.

I wish I had stuck it out and kept her in her own bed, but you get desperate in the middle of the night. She slept like five hours next to me.
  • Tonight was not normal. Not sure if I should be glad or worried. LO has been fussy in the evenings lately and tonight was no exception. Once he calmed down he fell asleep on me at 8pm. He probably would have just kept sleeping but I wanted to change his diaper and get him swaddled at 10:30 when I took him upstairs for the night. He nursed on the left, then fell back asleep.

Fast forward to me waking up around 5:30 with a rock solid right breast. It was so full because little man didn't wake to feed at all during the night, so it had been like 10 hours since the right side was nursed. I pumped for just a few minutes to relieve the pressure and little man was still fast asleep. He was fussing a bit, so I went ahead and changed his diaper and am now feeding him. He slept for nearly 7 hours straight and only woke because of the diaper change. He's going through his 6 week growth spurt and I know babies sometimes sleep more during that time but this was unexpected. Like I said before, not sure if I should be glad / grateful for the rest or worried.

And now after 13 minutes of nursing, he's passed out again...

I wouldn't be too worried, a lot of babies start STTN early on and it's fine. As long as you still get plenty of diapers and LO still gains weight normally, thank your lucky stars and get some sleep, mama!

In the beginning my LO was sleeping from 11:30pm to 4am, eating once, and then sleeping until we get up around 7:30. Not as long as yours, but she had gained weight okay so my pedi said let her sleep. Of course now she falls asleep around 9, gets up at 11-12, 2-3, 5, and 7. So I wish she would still sleep longer.

  • This isn't the middle of the night, but the Doc gave my DH strict orders that I am not to be doing MOTN feedings alone while I adjust to some of this medication and while we make sure my BP is under control.  He evidently has no idea how to put her to bed because I woke up several times between feedings to him fussing with her to get her to go down.  One time I just picked her out of his arms and stuck her in her swing.  He freaked out about leaving her there and I just stared at him a minute and told him to take his nap now because she'd be up in 3 hours. I was right.. she woke up in the swing 3 hours later and after I fed her he resumed not understanding how our daughter works.  *sigh* He tries.  When it became daylight today I had a conversation about how sometimes she'll go down in the pnp but other times for your own sanity it's better just to let her swing herself to sleep.

  • I'm trying to wean off the nipple shield after a LLL meeting today and she is so fussy at the breast. It's so frustrating she latches on, then pushes herself off and roots, then screams at my boob in frustration. I'm so tired and she seems like she's starving.
I've said this about a bazillion times, but I don't give a damn about my dependence in my nipple shield. It saves my sanity and nursing is quicker, so I said eff it, and I only attempt bare boob during the day, when I'm not as desperate for sleep.
**** I am also trying to wean baby girl off the shield. Only because with the shield, I can't tellnif she's actually eating or just comfort sucking. Whereas, without the shield, I can "feel" whether she's eating. Like @Ahlome08‌ , I go bare during the day, but will use the shield at night for sanity's sake because she latches much quicker. I don't have the patience when I'm tired, and I will get irrationally frustrated with a newborn :-/ hang in there. For me the shield doesn't seem to cause any confusion, as she eats very well bare-breast during the day.
I do the same thing! The shield during MOTN feedings and bare during the day has worked really well for us, as long she doesn't fall asleep too quickly at night. LO has no problem latching either =)

  • MOTN yet? I am so happy that I am actually getting some real smiles from Mia. It is helping me get through the night. I just finished season 4 of the Walking Dead and now need a new series on Amazon or Netflix to pass the time. Any recommendations?

@SanRemo I second starting MOTN cause I'm so freaking glad it's Friday so I can get DHs butt up to fed/change/soothe LO whenever I feel like sleeping more tonight!

Orphan Black is amaze-balls and on Amazon. And for Netflix, House of Cards is great or Ameican Horror Story.

Strip him down to a diaper, change the diaper, tickle his feet, try s cool damp wash cloth on his skin to get him to wake up.

  • How can you tell if your LO is using you as a pacifier? I think I can tell but am also constantly second guessing because I don't want to deny her food if she's hungry. Also she doesn't like the actual pacifier but seems like she needs something to soothe herself to sleep. Gah :(
  • So tired and irrationally angry H isn't back to help with the first feeding. He asked if he could to go get food with his buddy after work and I knew better than to say no.

Right now, Lo will go from sound asleep to feverishly feeding. Just pick one so we can go to bed!

1am and first wake up. After my visit with the lacation team today (yesterday technically) i dont make enough milk so need to pump after each feeding which is gonna make things longer. If she can stay calm enough for me to pump i am supposed to feed her that otherwise 1oz of formula cuz i need to make up at least 1oz each feed until my supply goes up.
I woke up in a panic an hour ago once again that she was in bed with us. Even freaked my husband a bit because i was in such a panic.

This was the news I got today as well. DD seems to be much happier with the extra supplement, but pumping after sucks!

My SO headed to the movies with some buddies after work to see the new horror movie out. He asked to make sure it was alright with me first, and I told him to go. He also doesn't help MOTN at all either. I have no idea why I woke up so angry at him, but I did. I am pissed over virtually nothing.

  • @tigger99 hang in there! I had to do that with LO for the first week. The pumping really does help, but it can be exhausting! Hopefully your supply will increase asap!

LO slept from 7 until midnight but woke back up at two. I've started making his nursery a super relaxing place, with music and water and snacks. It's helped me stay calm and it's helped my let down. Here's to hoping tomorrow night goes as smoothly when my ILs stay over!

  • @Rmj1022‌ my LO has started fussiness recently, so, when he stops actively sucking and swallowing, I lay him on my chest. This helps him to burp and gives him a chance to fall asleep. If he's not hungry anymore, this usually world, if he is still hungry, he will start fussing, routing, and eventually scream.
  • Wtf lo... The all night cluster feeds need to stop.. I've got a toddler. I don't have the liberty of sleeping in the day
  • Dd2 fell asleep about 10 tonight after another no nap day. She woke up about 12:45. Shit. There goes our night. Ds2, on the other hand, has become quite the predictable little man. He is more often than not in his bed out cold around midnight. I put him in bed a little late tonight but he still didn't wake up and I'm hoping that he stays asleep until 3:00.

@NinjaZia‌ I hope all calms down for you guys. These first months with lo's are so stressful and exhausting. Get some good sleep somehow and hopefully you two can talk it out soon.

  • Okay, what. Wednesday (night 3) this little banshee was driving me insane trying to nurse/soothe/sleep with a nipple in his mouth for hours. My milk came in this afternoon, and tonight he's nursing 5-7 minutes, falling asleep warm & snuggly, and sleeping for 3+ hours and not wanting to wake up for the next one. It's freaking me out.
