  • Soooo completely not. I think this might be Olive's favourite pastime. This and blowing raspberries. Neither are cute at 4 in the morning.
C'mon... the raspberries are kinda cute, right??  I have a hard time not smiling no matter what time of night he breaks them out.

  • Ok, I will probably totally jinx myself, but I want to share in case it helps anyone else.   For what seems like ages here lately, my little guy will not go to sleep at night without a lot of work.   He would be happy when we first put him in the crib and then slowly work himself up to where he was screaming, despite how much patting, head caressing, shushing I would do.  I would have to pick him up and comfort him or nurse him and then try again, rinse, repeat.   It was taking forever to get him down.  Also  I feel like I've started a bad habit with picking him up, but I'm not able to let him CIO either.

Last night, he was so worked up he wouldn't even take the pacifier.  Just screaming.   I'm not sure why I thought of it it, but I rolled him over to his side and he immediately quit crying and started sucking on the pacifier.  It occurred to me that side-lying was one of the calming techniques in the Happiest Baby on the Block  book/video, so I decided to employ the others.  He was already swaddled with one arm out, so I rolled him over to his back and started rocking him back and forth.  I used my thumb to hold his pacifier in and had the rest of my hand on his chest and it made that head jiggling effect they do in the video.  I shushed him along with the white noise that we always have playing.   His eyes closed and he started relaxing his arm.  It took some time, but he eventually went to sleep with no more crying.   I was anxious to try it tonight to see if it was a fluke, and he went to sleep without crying at all!   It is still taking some time and it kills my back to be bent over the railing of the crib that long, but I'll take it over a screaming baby any day.   I will say that he's woken up twice since he first went down, but the first time, my husband got him back down after a good burp, using the same method.  The second time, it just took me putting the pacifier back in and a few rocks to get him back asleep.  He was tooting as I walked out, so I think some gas is keeping him from getting into a good sleep.   Fingers crossed he stays down!   Now, I just need to get this done 2 or 3 hours earlier in the evening.

  • I wish DS would just fuss when I put him down in his crib drowsy but awake or when he wakes up when I put him in the crib. It always turns into full hysterical crying. :( I'm still nursing him to sleep every time and I don't want to perpetuate that crutch forever but I need him to sleep...

All of this exactly. No idea how to quit nursing to sleep. DD wakes up after every sleep cycle (about every 1-2 hours) and won't go back down unless she's nursing. I just spent half the night with a baby sleeping in my armpit while attached to my boob. Off to buy to magic Merlin suit...

  • LO has been napping since 6p and it's now 8pm and she's out. Bedtime is 8:30. Hope we aren't screwed. Hate to wake her but wondering if we should so we can get her down for the night. She's in our bed and not her crib. What do you do if Naptime runs into bedtime?

@MerryLove‌ let me know how it worked! Ours is coming in the mail tomorrow! Also who else puts their LO down around 6? I know I've read about it and some of you have suggested an early bedtime. This is her 2nd night after having awful nights for about 2 weeks and she seems to be responding to it really well. She is usually exhausted since she hardly naps. I'm just nervous we will end up awake at 3 or something because it's so early. I guess we will have to wait and see.

We roll with it. It usually means she's just tired and doesn't affect night time sleep negatively. More than once I've put her down for a nap and she pretty much went to bed for the night and ended up sleeping in a dress. Tonight she took a late nap, woke at 7, I fed her, put her jammies on, she talked and giggled with DH for 10 minutes then started rubbing her face so we put her to bed. We had an 8 bedtime but she's often done by 7:30 now.
Fortunately she woke up shortly after my post. I was thinking she was going to be out a lot longer. Naps are ok in my bed but I wouldn't have been comfortable with overnight. She was so wide eyed and chatty when she got up I worried she wouldn't go back down. We did her normal routine (bath and bottle) and she went right down. Fingers crossed it doesn't affect the night.
  • Well, got LO back in her crib. She had been rolling over and not being able to sleep on her tummy. I rubbed her back once she got to her tummy and she fell right asleep! Unfortunately she started crying after about three hours. But it sounded like she was having a horrible dream :-( Eyes were still shut but her cry sounded like she was afraid or something hurt her :-(. Now I'm holing her on the couch while she sleeps. And to think I thought we were making progress. Ugh, always another night I guess.

Yes. I feel bad too. She had on fleece Pjs and a fleece sleep sack. It doesn't seem to bother her though. Let me know if you figure something out.

  • Yeah it doesn't bother him either. I don't use a fleece sleep sack just fleece pjs. I might put a onesie on underneath and socks too. I think the cold hands are unavoidable and based on my 5 am Google search it's common.

My LO often has cold hands and feet but so do I so I just figured it was due to poor circulation (like me).
  • OMG DD was up nursing every 3 hours last night. Such a nice change after weeks of nursing every 1-2 hours nonsense. Hope this sticks!

Same here. I also use fleece pajamas and fleece sleep sack and her hands and arms still get cold. I worry about it, too, but she doesn't seem bothered.

I ordered the Zipadeezip sleep suit.  Partly because we are transitioning her out of the swaddle and because her little hands are cold whenever she busts out of the swaddle.  Now if I could find a way to keep her little nose warm.  I'm sure they don't make a suit for that!

Lately we've been able to put dd in the crib and sooth her while she fusses a bit. Over the next hour or 2 she usually wakes and cries out a couple times and needs more soothing. Sometimes she wants to eat again, other times she escalates to the point where DH bounces her back to sleep.

Tonight she was really chill and snuggly after a bath and feeding, but not doing her telltale face rub. DH took her for a bit and eventually bounced her some but she didn't fall asleep so he just put her in the crib. She didn't fuss a bit, just laid there with her eyes open. He went to watch football and I stayed in her room assuming she'd need me at some point. She kicked around for a few minutes but never made a peep and I eventually left the room. She's been asleep ever since - 3+ hours.

Naturally, I'm really worried about her and not sleeping.

Edit: and of course she woke up hungry right after I fell asleep :)

Sounds like a parenting win to me. We figured out that same thing when DD was 10sh weeks. That's how we put her to bed now. Some nights she fusses a bit but some nights she lays there quietly and falls asleep. Nice job, Mama!

  • We're having issues w/ LO hitting his head on the side of the crib and waking up too. The only thing I can think of is bumpers but that would scare me too much and I wouldn't get ANY sleep then because I would be worried about him suffocating the entire time. So I guess there's no good solution so I'm just here to whine. Thanks for listening.

Is the 4 month wakeful period a phase that will end on its own at some point? Or is sleep training the only way to get baby back to sleeping 6-7 hr stretches?

ETA: Geez, I'd be happy with 4-5 hr stretches again but this waking up every 90-120 min in the MOTN is for the birds!
  • I swear someone slipped in and gave my kid an espresso without me seeing.  Or maybe some champagne.   He's babbling and cooing and flirting and doing every cute thing but going to sleep tonight.  Hopefully, he's wearing himself out so when he does go down, he'll stay down a while.   A girl can dream, right?

  • 4 month wakeful period needs to go away!!!! So tired of this!!! We had a break when she had her shots and slept 8 hours but she screamed out every hour so I was up anyway. At least I didn't have to bounce her. Now we are back to every 2 hours then every 10-30 min once 4 hits. Ugh!!

  • @MK1013‌ sounds like a normal night in this house these days! I will say it did take a couple days for my LO to sleep better in the crib but now we are back to sleeping awful.
    image

  • So.... My once 5-7 hour sleeper is literally waking every hour. For 6 weeks now. Last night may have been the worst...down at 9 then up at 1015,1130,1230,130...well you get the picture until around 5 when she was very awake. Somehow I managed to get her to sleep from 6-8 but in the meantime I was so awake by then.... How long does this last??? She will literally only go to sleep is I nurse her back to sleep.
  • A nap? What's that? No sorry. :( no advice as we haven't seen one if those in days....
  • DS is currently napping on the Boppy in my lap and I'm afraid to move for fear of waking him...

Me right now. Why won't you nap!?! How is it possible she takes 2+ hour naps and multiple naps a day at daycare but will not nap at home?!

  • Oh balls, he's awake. I don't think a 15-minute nap can really count as a nap. :/

The Bumping must have woken him! How dare you move your fingers!
  • We had and awful night, I think I'm done with Merlin for a bit, maybe forever. When she wakes up in it, it's nearly impossible I sooth her back to sleep without nursing which is why I was trying it in the first place. Ugh!

Last night she woke up every hour in the hour starting at midnight. I miss my good sleeper!

I don't think he has slept for longer than a 4 hour stretch since he was 3 months old............. :'( I miss my 6 hour stretches! Beginning to think I won't ever see them again.

I would agree with this, but I've actually seen DS napping at daycare when I've stopped in (it's a corporate supported center where I work). I think all the activity going on in the room disrupts his sleep cycles just enough that he doesn't wake completely but then stays asleep for longer than the one cycle I tend to get at home.
I mentioned this to the Dr and she said she really thinks they want to soak up Mommy & Daddy time when at home. That's sweet, LO, really, but GTFTS

I'm wondering the same thing but it sounds like we are all in the thick of it. Hers started about 3 or so weeks ago and is still going. I've read that it can last 2-6 weeks and I know this is also a wonder week time as well. Those 2 things and a growth spurt has made for one heck of a time!! Ready for it all to be over!!

Same thing here. DS doesn't have 7 hour stretches anymore. Lately I get no more than 3-4 and he wakes every 2 hours. Then he's up around 5am and I stick the boob in his mouth to keep him quiet for another hour. Sometimes it works. I'm exhausted at work and I teach 27 crazy kindergarteners. Life is hell right now. This kid is lucky he's super cute.
  • I'm sure this post was meant for our LO's sleep but how about our sleep. DS sleeps through the night like a champ (I know I'm lucky, two good sleepers) but I'm up 3 times a night....I sleep hard for like an hour and half then I'm up, awake, then back to sleep and the cycle starts over again. Anyone else????

@MK1013‌ , this scares me. We've just started this transition but so far, we've only tried naps in the crib. Big fat fail, I tell you. I see eyeballs the second I put her down in the crib. This does not happen in the co-sleeper which is also flat. WTF, child.
