  • the only time I have EVER seen staining like that, was when a friend of mine approached me trying to figure out how to get stains out so she could sell (CDing just wasn't for her). Her daughter had a carrot and prune blowout about one hour into a 10 hour drive, so they changed her at a rest stop...and she put it in a grocery bag to help contain the smell... she forgot about it by the time they got home... and it baked in her car for over a week and a half in the summertime... that thing didn't stand a chance. the amount of bleach that it would have taken would have destroyed the PUL

With some teamwork we managed to get about 50% of the staining that was left gone, but the rest would have been some kind of cosmic event to remove. Planets colliding and crap.

  • Guh-rosss!

Every single diaper? I can't even imagine opening that fluff mail. I'd have to wear a mask, you know they stink!!
I feel so bad for those kids who wore those!

Stains drive me crazy, I'll work for days to get stains out if I had to. Not those though. I'd toss them. Sorry. Those are trash to me.

I can't believe she sold those! 80 bucks?

Hopefully we'll be able to see after pictures, and a break down of wash routines and how many man hours it took to clean those!

  • Between dawn cascade and rlr/bleach no wonder people get confused lol

I think the hard water is legit. But rlr won't solve all the problems.
  • I guess diaper companies keep raking it in from people who ruin their diapers and don't make them last between one or multiple children.
  • You have to wonder where some of the recommendations come from. Like if you use detergent like seventh gen you need twice the recommended amount because it's weaker than petroleum based detergents. Did someone just day that and then other people repeated it until suddenly it's just established fact?

  • Isn't it better too to use less with soft water? Otherwise you'd have a suds mess?

Probably. People hear other people they trust say something and just assume it's true. When I first joined this board, using fish tank cleaner was a regular recommendation. I was just starting to look at clock diapers, and I was so horrified/confused/overwhelmed by the idea of having to clean something with fish tank cleaner
    What is fish tank cleaner?

  • @Mapleme‌ that's so true. There isn't a one size fits all and that seems to be the groups approach. Fluff love, asylum etc.

I've learned things from here and on fb but in the end I have to figure it out myself as my routine can be very different.

I am curious to see the after shots. And their process. And how they probably destroyed the elastic and pul in the diapers.

Oh, this makes me sad. I joined the group because I'm intrigued about these diapers (I think they will be able to get them clean, but it will seriously shorten the lifespan of the diaper in the process). I was reading down the posts and found a woman who moved a month ago from a place with hard water to a place with soft water. When she moved she did a RLR and bleach soak to strip existing minerals from her diapers. She uses Tide F&C and slowly over the past month she's had a growing ammonia issue. The admin who helped her (I think it was an admin) told her that she still has minerals from her old place in her diapers and that she needs to do a new RLR soak and then use twice as much detergent... X_X

Oh, the plethora of bad advice!

I know what you mean.....I had joined the group in the hopes that they were better than the compendium but I left shortly after joining when I realized they were not better and the posts were taking over my news feed and for whatever reason I couldn't unfollow them. The best quote I have come across so far though was a response to someone asking about using soap nuts on their diapers and someone on another board said "The compendium doesn't approve of using soap nuts."

I used to think that the stories about people using ammonia remover for fish tanks on their diapers was an urban legend until a zombie post on another board was resurrected a couple months ago.

    Seriously.

I am currently watching an interesting debate on a local board as a new mama is complaining of leaking and everyone is "DETERGENT BUILD UP!!!!!!" and giving 60,000 conflicting ways to fix it. No one seems to care that they are almost brand new (her baby is a week old), it MUST be build up from...umm... one wash?

This is why I don't like first time posts that are like "My diapers are leaking.  Help!!!!!11"  And that is all they post.

    ------damn quote box-----

It's groups like that that make people think CDing is too hard and intimidating. It makes it seem like it's so much work to wash diapers and leaking is a huge issue. Really, it takes a long time and a lot of detergent to get leak causing build up, unless your doing something really crazy. If people didn't make washing diaoers a "science" I think more people would CD and not be overwhelmed by detergents and routines, etc.

  • I'm in a related Facebook group to the one that is being discussed. I'm not exactly sure how related other than there are a lot of crossovers. The two Facebook groups tend to give similar advice though.
In my opinion, this board recommends too little detergent and the Facebook group is too against the idea of a hot water strip for detergent buildup. Most people in my Facebook group favor WAHM fitteds and I see a lot more fleece covers there than here so I think the Facebook advice is more tailored to those sorts of diapers than here. A very mild bleach soak in a bathtub is frequently recommend there and I do think a lot of people get good results from that. However, I always suggest a hot water strip before anything else because there is zero chance of making the problem worse and might fix it.

And I've been (mostly lurking) here since early 2010 :p

Is there no one there who is suggesting that perhaps her diapers might need some additional prep? That would be more likely than detergent buildup.
  • I think I lurked here a bit in 2011, but I was still all over the place at that point and didn't really pop in much because I had joined some (ahem... crazy-ass...) CDing groups on facebook instead.
When I mentioned using tide (hey, it worked for me...) it was like blasphemy... I felt like I was receiving an internet exorcism...
I don't think I'll be able to use the same wash method this time that I did before since I have a different machine now, but that's why I'm here... instead of dealing with facebook stalkers LOL! I seriously had to go into complete hidden mode because of the ones who were WAY too obsessed with things. With it being a local group, the kicker was when someone called my old backup phone (I had a prepaid phone I used to keep in my car for emergencies that I had given away, and the number was still in my name. But the only way to get it was to PAY for a people search thing... oh yeah, it was THAT kind of stalker. Just to tell me that they thought I should sun my diapers instead of use the dryer and try to teach me the word of RnG. Crazy-B.)

(note* when I used Tide, I used HE tide in an non HE machine, and went rinse-crazy after, and it wad only very effective with natural fibers like cotton and hemp for me. That's my take. I'm going to probably have a TON of wash questions over time, just wait haha!)

  • Except "we" don't actually have a universal recommendation for anything. Including amount of detergent.
It's usually start with this, add more until you get clean diapers.  Then stick with that amount unless you have issues.

I assume this was in response to what I said and yeah I know there isn't a 100% agreed upon recommendation on this board, but generally speaking this board recommends less detergent than some others.

That could generate some real CD Board drama. Every once in a while one surfaces here and folks seriously side eye them, but we've never had them invade en masse.

If that's the case then I think it would be because using the least amount of detergent necessary would minimize your chances of developing a buildup problem. Because that's a real thing.
  • @Mapleme‌ what we're the details of said "OMG someone's doing that" ... I'd like to go lurk.
  • Oh I think I briefly read it and got bored lol.

I can only take the rlr/bleach rambling for so long.
  • I don't feel like we recommend specific amounts of detergent to people. I've seen people here say use more or use less depending on what kinds of issues people are having. We also don't have the unified policy/hive mind thing going on (read the files!!!!).

  • And detergent residue/build up is apparently a myth. Even though it's accepted fact in pretty much every aspect of the laundry and diaper industry and demonstrable to anyone with access to a washing machine. Or water.
