This vacuum/forceps/c-section conversation is so relevant to me right now. DH & I had our second childbirth class last night and these were topics discussed. The instructor said the hospital doesn't really use forceps anymore, that the vacuum is far more common. And that it's used more often for women who've had the epidural because they have a harder time pushing. This kind of scared me because I do plan on getting an epidural, but I really don't want a vacuum assist! Is it that difficult to properly push with an epi? :-S Also, I don't think I would ever opt for a c-section. It's not that I'm "anti-caesarean" or anything, I would gladly do whatever is needed for baby to get out as safely as can be. It's just the fact that it's a major surgery and the recovery is daunting... Also my hospital doesn't do immediate skin-to-skin for c-sect moms and babies. That made me a little sad too.
Birthing classes can be downright scary. They give you a shit ton of information and "what if's" but try not to put the cart before the horse if you can. Yes, women who have had an epidural can push and lots do it with ease. You NEVER ever know what could happen during birth so try not to freak yourself out. Be in constant communication with the medical team during your labor and do what is needed to get the baby out safely. Being educated is great, but don't let all the information freak you out.
My birthing class was the opposite. The instructor had a powerpoint presentation and on the slide for forceps she listed the pros then for cons, she said some bullshit about how forceps are made to be these big scary things but "our doctors have performed thousands and thousands of births and know how to use them" so we shouldn't worry about the cons. The powerpoint said "More serious complications are extremely rare." One of the dads asked what the more serious complications were and the instruction blew him off. She shrugged her shoulders and said "they're rare, I wouldn't worry about them." I almost came out of my seat! In hindsight, I really regret not speaking up right then. Like PPs have said, it is something that we need to be informed of and I fear that the rest of the participants in the class will not be fully informed.

Or maybe it's best that I just shut my mouth and let everyone else be responsible for their own births.

  • So, I LOVE the lady that does my hair.

But I said something to her about my appointment September 27th (which has been scheduled since like, May, since we booked all my appointments through pregnancy strategically to get this last one in place), and she said "whoops, I overbooked, let's move you to another day."

No. I KNOW mine was booked first. NO.

I love her, so I don't want to fight, and I want to just go with it, but this isn't fair. So now, I have to push it back a week (and I might have a baby before that), or go after work when I'm exhausted. I said we could maybe do it October 2nd, if I'm able to start maternity leave October 1st like I'd like to, but even so, I wanted it taken care of in September.

  • I just ate a tomato sandwich (tomato slices, mayo, salt and pepper) for lunch.  When I packed the bread with mayo this morning, I considered bringing 4 slices of bread so I could have 2 sandwiches, but I resisted the urge, because it felt gluttonous at the time.  REGRETS.  It doesn't feel gluttonous now that I have one delicious tomato sandwich in my belly, and another half a tomato staring at me longingly.

I respectfully disagree, and will add that Siamese is the way to go. ;)

  • Well I am semi caught up with the thread.

Last night was our second day for the birth class, DH and I cannot get our shit together.

On the first day DH forgot the blanket and pillows. This time we forgot the book. You can tell the teacher is slightly annoyed/amused that we can't get our shit together. And we were late both days. I kept on thinking ppl were judging us like..."we know what kind of parents they will be" Whatevs.

We're supposed to bring a pillow next week and I'm worried I'll forget! It's the "mock labor" class... What will this pillow be used for? And this is in a hospital. Don't they have an abundance of pillows for us to use?! I kinda don't want bring one from home and get it all hospital-y.

OMG that is one of my favorite sandwiches.  And 2 is a requirement, not gluttonous!

Hospital pillows might as well not be pillows at all.  They suck so much.  DH made me bring him 2 pillows from home when he was in the hospital because he hated the 7 they gave him so much.  But ITA, I didn't want to do it at all, because now I think those pillows are somehow contaminated.  I would NEVER have brought the ones from our bed; these were old crappy ones that he's been using on the couch and to prop his leg up.

  • So I just got home from the dr. I am a fingertip dilated which I never was with DD even at 41.1 when I went in for my induction which is amazing!! But I was measuring at 34 weeks where as I was measuring 36 weeks last week and I have lost 2 lbs. Dr didnt seemed worried about it and thought most likely it just meant the baby was moving down. Anyone else have this happen??

  • I'm currently signing up for a ticketmaster-partner survey thing where you earn ticketmaster gift cards for answering surveys from partner companies a few times a week.  I love filling out forms and taking surveys, but I resent that all the background it's asking me for (so that it can tailor the surveys to my lifestyle, obviously) is about my employment - I am not my job, yo.

I will NOT be clicking on that To Do List check-in thread. It will only make me hyperventillate.

Same. Still only at the fruit roll-up stage of hospital bag packing. I'm cool with it.

I looked at a box of Fruit Roll Ups while grocery shopping yesterday because I haven't had them in forever, plus they're fucking delicious. The price was like $4.99. I couldn't bring myself to buy them.

Yup. When baby dropped early at almost 31 weeks, I lost 2 lbs. Held steady for 3 weeks, then gained back 1 lb this week. Since 31 weeks, I've been measuring 3-4 weeks behind. We did a growth scan this morning just in case and she is growing perfectly.
    This makes me feel better!!

  • I think I might marry our pharmacist. He completely eased my fear and paranoia about this situation. He told me I probably had better chances of winning the lotto than contacting scabies after our brief 10-15 min exposure. He was even surprised our pedi prescribed the cream, because of our limited contact and said it's usually spread through direct contact (such as sleeping in bed with someone or prolonged contact (like if my dad lived with us). I'm still spending the day washing linens and scrubbing the shit out of my house compulsively, but I feel a lot better.

My youngest brother got scabies when he was 6ish.  No one else in our house got them.  But I still remember that poor baby buck nekkid getting the cream put on him by our mom.  I was 14 and thoroughly grossed out but I think my mom felt more like you (and she was so ashamed that her baby had something so nasty)

We are clean people and that particular brother bathes(we are talking actual baths at least once a day).

Also, fx for good news at your appointment!

  • How am I supposed to catch up on 9 pages! Bah!

I am delinquent with my baby shower thank yous.  I think writing thank yous is one of my all time least favorite things to do.  Maybe after packing for trips.  It's not that I don't feel thank you and don't want to recognize the people who generously gave us things it's just that I get tired of writing the same thing repeatedly.
We are so excited to grow our family!
