Who cares about Jenny McCarthy, she is not the reason that some who are actually doing their research on vaccines do not vaccinate. The ones who don't are the sheeple who watch way too much tv. They let the fear of "possibility" of autism from a vaccine scare them. Same goes to all the pro-vaccinators seems like your only comeback is always referencing this woman, so you too are being manipulated by the media out there. This will never be a debate amongst us parents it's a bunch of adults just arguing over something none of them fully understand bc none of us know the science, none of us have the degrees and all we have is what someone told me is the right choice. I'm totally neutral on this subject in case someone asks, I am pro and anti, I don't care what you do with your family that is your decision and not mine. But I do want to say to a question raised earlier about circumcision if I am having a boy we are not; I don't see the need to cut my perfect little boy bc aren't they perfect when they come out of you? That's they way they grew inside of you, why alter them?
You "don't care" what others do with their family NOW, but what about when an un-vaxxed kid exposes yours to measles or whooping cough? Will you care then? Or will you still be happily ignorant to the effects of others not vaccinating their children? I don't think pro-vaxxers are being manipulated by the media at all: scientific proof that vaccinations save lives is all we need to know. I suggest you do a little more research before you judge everyone here.
EXACTLY THIS. Lets say your kid is the one who can't have vaccines. I think you will care about what other parents are doing then. You will have to.

  • Wow, F15! I was purposely avoiding this thread but couldn't help myself when I saw that it was up to 6 pages. I'm impressed by our ability to behave as GAW.
For the obligatory response, yes we are vaccinating our kids. To not vaccinate brings too many health risks. DS has had some reactions to vaccines in the past (fever, rashes), but that hadn't altered my opinion.

  • I guess I'll be the one with the unpopular opinion. I am so against vaccines, but not completly. There is absolutely no reason to give kids the amount of vaccines that we do at the ages that we do. Children are supposed to get 38 vaccines by the time they are 10 when it used to only be 12 vaccines. I feel like infants and babies are receiving too many vaccines when they are young. What's the point in a hep b vaccine when baby is first born, they are neither sharing blood or having sex. And flu shots have never been proven to be effective. In fact they have killed over 4000 people. The flu is ever developing and the vaccine given each year is for the prior years strand of flu, meaning it won't protect you from a mutated from of flu.
Personal example. My grandma had 3 horses, only one got a west Nile vaccine and the only one of her horses to get west Nile and almost die was the one who received the vaccine. But the horses were all exposed to the same places, animals, and were around the same ages and all in good health.
With that said I do think vaccines have saved countless lives. Look at the polio vaccine and smallpox vaccine. I think some are so necessary. But I encourage parents to find which aren't necessary and which are. Doctors are vaccine happy and generally give any and all vaccines, when some are just not necessary.
But I am all for a modified vaccine schedule. Giving older children, 5 and above vaccines and only giving infants and young children vaccines that are absolutely important. Newborns are so incredibly fragile. Giving the 12 vaccines before they go home can just ruin their immune system.
But whatever you do, research it. Some vaccines are LIFE SAVING AND NECESSARY!!!!
Find out when and what time would be the best to give your kids vaccines and talk to your docotr about spreading them out. And find out which ones your kids truely need.

@tlc4mama‌ - what exactly are you agreeing with? Babies don't go home with 12 vaccines already administered. It seems that entire post was misinformed.

It would be great to give is some insight on what, exactly, you find wrong with vaccination.

And no blog posts/op ed books please.

I should have clarified what parts I am in agreement with. I definitely agree with waiting until they're older. I agree that the flu shot is outdated by the time it is developed because the virus has already mutated. I agree that some, not all, are life saving and necessary. That's pretty much it.

Flu shot anytime. Whooping cough is dangerous during pregnancy from my understanding and is given post birth before you are discharged.
@ordinary1‌ - I believe the whooping cough vaccine is recommended during the third trimester of every pregnancy, now. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/adults/rec-vac/pregnant/whooping-cough/get-vaccinated.html I got tDap a year ago, but they still want me to get it again because it helps the baby get protected before birth. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
Thank you for posting that! I swear I remember nothing from my last pregnancy (May 13) lol.
  • I'm sorry, I'm just so done.
  • I'm only up to page 4 with the responses, but I just wanted to chime in with our thoughts.

We DO vaccinate, but are on an alternate schedule. We do Dtap (or is it tdap when it's kids? I can never remember which is which) on time (we would have combined it with rotovirus, but my kid has a birth defect that makes him more likely to experience complications/side effects from the vaccine). PC & HIB a month later. We also did MMR on time, and have started the polio series. We will wait a little while on the chicken pox. For the Hep's, we will get him "caught up" by preschool. There may be some I haven't remembered - this is based off memory. We based it off of the more pressing threats to him and our doctors advice on what was important for his age.

Delayed or alternate schedules are not for everyone. You really have to have the time to make shots only appointments and we have to keep an excel spreadsheet with our schedule. If I didn't have the time or desire for all these dr trips, we would have vaccinated on time. Also, I think some parents never get around to finishing up a series, so you really have to be committed if you are going off schedule.

Essentially I believe vaccines are crucial and so important. I was struck by an argument I heard that those in some other countries are desperate for the vaccines to help save their kids. We are so privileged to have access to these things.

    Question****

My question is the flu shot for babies. The CDC even admits that the vaccine has proven less effective for those under two. I remember reading somewhere that it was similar to a placebo in babies, but I need to find that again. Has this been discussed already?

Now back to reading pages 4-6...

  • Yes! Thank you! You're amazing @tee18‌ . Seriously. Going off schedule shouldn't be taken lightly & I think it's great you & your doctor have a plan in place for the best interest of your child! That's why those of us who have the luxury to be vaccinated on time need to do so to keep up the herd immunity! That way those who can't be vaccinated on time have more protection!
  • We are team vaccine! I have to say as a FTM I had no idea that people should be getting whooping cough boosters so this thread has been helpful for me! Thanks for that!!

I was like you and I'd never heard much of whooping cough before I got pregnant. Out here in Southern California, though, pertussis has gotten seriously scary. The department of public health has declared it an epidemic with 2/3 of the people infected being under 4 months old.

It's a seriously smart idea to ask anyone who is going to come in early contact with your baby to make sure they are up to date.

They don't even recommend whooping cough boosters for adults here in Canada.  At least not for pregnant women.

But they do run blood tests to ensure you're still carrying immunity to all the important diseases, so I've got that......

  • I'm late to the party, but Im so glad to see how one sided this board is! Feb15 yall rock! I read somewhere ( readers digest I think) that Canadian Dr are starting to refuse to accept new patients who dont plan to vaccinate.

This happened to my friend. The dr said they couldn't keep her daughter as a patient. However, she was quick to point out to the dr that they can't deny service for that reason. The dr backed off but still suggested that they could help her find a dr they would like better. At any rate she did a delayed schedule.

  • I plan on getting Spawn fully vaccinated but I do plan on discussing a modified vaccination schedule with our Dr.

@foxslaw she's not coming back to this post because she's too busy stalking her hubby's ex from the other thread!

    Lol.
  • Couldn't agree more with @sugahcookie01‌ especially since working in the medical field and seeing children and even adults suffer from a disease that could've been prevented with one simple immunization.
  • I wasn't going to open this but I did & am proud to be on this board! As a teacher and a mom, I will say that anyone who can & chooses not to vaccinate is stupid & can stay away from my kids & out of my classroom!!

  • I think some of you ladies need to re-read the post on "how not to be a jerk on the internet" just because I choose to vaccinate and not care what others do is my way. I believe in the right of people's choice. And that falls in every category not just the vaccine debate.
  • Vaccines are not 100% safe. All you have to do us google "vaccine inserts" to see the actual manufacturers insert that details the dozens of potential side effects each one can cause. There are risks both ways. There are risks if you don't vaccinate and there are risks if you do. It is each parents responsibility to choose which potential outcomes they can live with. Just because someone chooses not to vaccinate does not mean they are stupid, uninformed, or selfish. I researched for months and decided to give my son the DTAP, HIB, pneumococcal, and polio vaccines, but chose to omit the MMR, Hep B, Hep A, Flu, and Varicella vaccines.
