The moment I pressed send I started considering the potential bomb I might have just planted. Hope it can stay civil and informative.
To not vaccinate your children at all is an example of gross negligence. "Herd immunity" has been diminished and diseases nigh extinct are back with a vengeance, threatening my soon to be newborn before they will get vaccinated themselves. It is irresponsible and pointless as NO EVIDENCE HAS ACTUALLY PROVEN LINKS TO THINGS LIKE AUTISM.
I hope the other F15 ladies feel similarly. I will say I don't have an issue with the delayed vaccine schedule since I can see someone. It wanting many vaccines all at one time. I'm talking about not vaccinating at all.
Here's hoping this doesn't turn into a shit show.
THIS.
Not vaccinating is irresponsible and no one can convince me otherwise.
Among other controversial topics, I've never known the "vaccine debate" to sway anyone one way or the other, but only ruffles a whole bunch of feathers. Find some legitimate sources, ask your doctor, make an informed decision.

Yes. Pregnant women should also get flu vaccines IMO but I don't feel incredibly strongly over that. It is important for parents, siblings and caregivers to be vaccinated for whooping cough and anything else they can spread to the baby, though.

Sorry to be naive, not a huge message board frequenter but what is "afp?"

This. There is a reason certain diseases are back on the radar....people stopped vaccinating.
I personally think that autism is just more widely diagnosed now. (I by no means mean overdiagnosed, I just mean we recognize it now.) I do not believe it has to do with vaccines. At all.

FYI: Andrew Wakefield, the man who "discovered" the ASD/vaccine link, was stripped of his license after it was discovered that he falsified data during those tests. Despite many scientists and doctors trying to reproduce his results it had never been done. If data cannot be reproduced it is invalid.
Oh, also, I will add it makes me angry that vaccinating is in any way, shape or form considered a "debate". It is not a debate. It is SCIENCE. It is facts that keep people alive. And the fact that so many have started blindly ignoring science makes me oh-so stabby.
I fully believe in doing your research on certain vaccines and making an informed decision for your child and i completely understand spacing them out but its all these anti-vaccine parents that are bringing diseases back that we thought we didn't have to worry about anymore.

A typo. Meant to be qfp - quote for posterity/proof in the event of a deleted thread.
Ah, I see. I think. Just to clarify, this wasn't exactly a method to determine whether I will vaccinate or not (I definitely sway to the vaccinate side). More of a place to voice opinions. I have in laws who have chosen not to vaccinate, which I never could make much sense of. I guess I am a sucker for a lively (friendly) debate for the sake of education/broadening perspectives.
To sum up how i feel about people refusing to vaccinate their kids......

I'm happy to see that there's not much debating on this topic. Have I told you lately that I love you guys and your big, beautiful, scientific, logical brains?
@HerHighness, I think you just won the internet and I love it.
At first, I wasn't sure I would get a flu shot while pregnant, since I have never in my life gotten one before, but have since decided that I think it is best to keep me and my little safe. Especially since I will be pregnant and giving birth in the winter. I will also be getting the whooping cough vaccine.
Does anyone know when the best time to get both of these shots is? Is second or third trimester better, or does it matter?
I completely agree with you all, and you said it perfectly. New direction of conversation though- my sister in law is adamantly anti-vaccination. Any children she has will NOT be vaccinated. (Oy.) How do you all propose I deal with the situation? I am SUPER weary about knowingly bringing my kids around unvaccinated children. There's no way I would want to start drama to keep the kids apart? (I know this is a decent amount of time off, but worth wondering!)
I agree with @chickyclg. You and/or your kid aren't vaccinated? Don't you dare come near my infant.
This. The problem here however is when people aren't upfront about it. I was going to a playgroup with a bunch of moms and their kids and only after adding a few of them on Facebook and seeing their posts did I realize that they don't vaccinate. Thanks for putting my infant and unborn child at risk, assholes.
Adeline received her 12 month shots last month and that was the only time that she had a negative reaction to them (more so than just crying when she got them). She was sick/fussy/clingy for a few days but then 100% fine. I can certainly understand a delayed schedule for vaccinations (my pediatrician actually recommended it) but I cringe and back away when someone talks about not vaccinating their child at all.

100% will be vaccinating. Like PP's said the link to autism has been disproven in many studies and the original study is fraudulent. Anyone who doesn't is a fool.
Unfortunately if there were others in my life that disagreed and chose to not vaccinate, it's a fools paradise but I would not allow them around my child. Family or no family, safety first.
We do all vaccines on schedule except the in-hospital Hep B that they give babies on the first or second day of life. DD received her first Hep B shot at 2 mos, as will this LO. I'm Hep B negative, dad is Hep B negative, all immediate family, etc. I'm not too concerned with LO coming into contact with infected blood or bodily fluids in her first 2 mos of life.
ETA: words for clarity
Why do you do it this way? Not judging, just curious...
I was vaccinated as a baby/child and my baby will be. I feel it's a form of neglect in away. Why would you not want the best health for your baby. So many children are becoming sick with illnesses of the past because parent's feel or think they are harmful. I can't believe how many children are already sick this school year. It just started. Please do the homework if your thinking of not vaccinating your child and if thats the best thing for everyone. Don't just think of your child you have to think of others!

This is a good point and something I consider, as my sister in law has not and will not vaccinate her children. I assume, however, that it is the unvaccinated children who have more to worry about than ours who are in fact vaccinated.
I completely agree with you all that everyone should be vaccinated. But call me stupid, I don't know what you mean when you say you don't want unvaccinated children near yours. If your kids are vaccinated, they should be immune, correct? I'm not arguing just genuinely trying to understand.
Vaccines are not 100% effective. Vaccinated children can get a sickness that they have been vaccinated against which is why it is so important for mass vaccinations. We create herd immunity this way letting the overall chances of sickness, spreading sickness and death from preventable illnesses.
@krendel1990 many of the vaccines are not given right away or are given in a series of shots throughout a period of time. Therefore even though your baby may have gotten one dose, they may not be fully safe. This is especially true for newborns. Hope that helps!
I got tDap a year ago, but they still want me to get it again because it helps the baby get protected before birth. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
I just wanted to add in here that I think everyone of the pro vaccine mommas on here can agree that making a choice not to vaccinate your child for the sake of just not vaccinating and deciding that a vaccination could harm your child due to medical issues like an allergy are completely separate issues. I don't think anyone here would flame a mom who couldn't let their child get a vaccine.

@sugahcookie01 Yyyyup. This is the county where I live. :-( Needless to say, I'm already worried for the sicknesses my LO will be exposed to as a newborn because some people didn't believe in science.

Absolutely, and this is why it's important that the kids that CAN be vaccinated are. Herd immunity is a strong thing. If a child was not vaccinated for something in the past because they were allergic to the vaccine it wasn't that big of a deal because 99.9% of the people they interacted with would be. Now if a child can not get a vaccine for a legitimate medical reason they have a much higher chance of encountering someone who chose not to vaccinate and therefore may be carrying the disease they could be vaccinated against.

This. My child had the chicken pox vaccine and she still got chicken pox. Granted she only got 7 pox instead if hundreds but she still got it because she was exposed. The more children that have the vaccines the less likely these diseases are to spread.

That makes sense. So typically by the time your child is school age it shouldn't matter if they play with unvaccinated children?
Yes and no. If your child is healthy and fully vaccinated the risks of catching a communicable disease from an unvaccinated child is low. BUT the risk is still drastically higher risk than interactions with vaccinated children.
I am in the staunchly for vaccinations camp and consider not vaccinating a healthy child borderline neglect. To the point that I would love to find a pediatrician who doesn't allow patients who won't vaccinate their children. I don't give s damn if you BF, co sleep etc but I will be that mom who asks if your child is vaccinated. Especially with younger kids.
Vaccines and common core are 2 things that are making me even consider home schooling kids. Although I don't think that will answer either problem. But that debate is for another day
Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

@krendel1990 Even if your child is old enough to have completed the vaccination schedule, there is still a chance s/he can get these sicknesses from an unvaccinated child. The advantage is that a vaccinated child is more likely to contract a less severe case of the sickness than an unvaccinated child.
