Re: The SS "Is this normal?" Thread

  • Is anyone else's pediatrician not doing a 1 mo check up? When I called to make DD's, she said the 2 wk and 1 mo were rolled together and not due until 2 mo???

We had a check up at like 5 days and then told that because all labs in the hospital had been good and her coloring was good that we could skip the 2 week appt and just do the 2 month one next.

We had a 1 week to check weight/get checked out and then a 2 week to make sure she was back at or above birthweight. Because she was doing so well the doctor said I don't need to schedule anything until the 2 month appointment.

This is how my pedi does it. 2 weeks and then 2 months.
  • Is not normal for my two week old to get to 9 pm and then have a meltdown for no reason? Not hungry, not tired, no dirty diaper, just half an hour of screaming. After he eats again and goes down for bed like nothing happened.

  • Does anyone else's LO sound kind of congested or asthmatic after he/she eats?

Yes! Mine sounds like he's kind of choking on fluid/wheezing and it seems painful. I've suspected reflux. Going to pedi today to get it checked out.

My pedi said congestion is also a sign of reflux. I broke down and gave her the baby Zantac he prescribed after another epic round of multiple spitting up of meals.

My mom calls this the "witching hour". My LOs is around 7. Just can't settle no matter what.

Mine sounds congested a lot and she has reflux. She sounds like she is wheezing when she eats.

  • LO slept 7 hours last night... She ate a ton right before bed, and didn't wake up until 6:30. Should I have woken her up?? She's only 2 weeks. She ate normally so far this morning, didn't act more hungry than normal.

Most nights she will sleep 3-4 hours between feedings, then eat a little more often during the day. She's up about half a pound from her birth weight... Not sure if I should be overjoyed or a bit concerned!
  • LO has a lot of baby acne on her face, but now it is on her neck and scalp too. Normal? Is there anything that helps clear it up?

Some people say wake them up but I go with if they are gaining weight, don't wake a sleeping baby. You might wake up with wet sore boobs if you are BF but that is something that I am ok with if it means more sleep :)
I leak every night no matter what! I sleep with a towel under me! Thanks for the advice, I will let sleeping baby sleep!
  • @JulieSmiles‌ the acne is fine. Charlie has it all over and the doc today said he looked great. I've heard breast milk can help but as his clears up in a few days I tend to not worry too much.

  • @lola4411‌ I would take him in. Charlie's did that for four days and I called, they had to cauterize it because he had a granuloma. No big thing but worth having done.

  • My baby growls basically all the time at nearly 4 weeks old. When she is awake, when she is asleep...

She seems to always have gas, or be trying to push something out.

Poopy diapers have decreased but are bigger poops when it happens. Still a normal amount of pee diapers.

I also cannot seem to get a burp out of her after eating. I have no idea why it's not working.

    Anyhow, any of these...NORMAL?

Sounds like my LO. I try every burping position and eventually one will come out, usually when we are transitioning to another position lol. When he's on my chest I will lift his butt out and that usually gets a burp out. Also tummy time across my lap and patting his back helps. We gave him gas drops when he was younger because he seemed really uncomfortable, but not so much anymore. I think he is just a growler. It's rare for him to full out cry.

  • My baby will never let go of the breast. She'll stay on for hours if I let her... normal?
I'm thinking not normal, that she's not getting enough milk out and that's why she wants to be on there forever.
@chersomething  my baby does the same thing.  Reading this and some other articles on Kellymom was helpful to me.

  • LO is losing some of her hair. My mom reassures me this is normal, but is it? How much do they lose? We've been joking that she is quickly going bald like her father!

It is normal. My son and my niece both lost their hair and their "real" hair grew right in. I know not every baby loses their hair, but some like ours do.

If you want to be a little more proactive, our ped recommended switching to fragrance free aquaphor 2-n-1 wash once a day and eucerin soothing creme twice a day. It doesn't really clear it up altogether, but it looks better and clears the redness. (When I tried breast milk on it, the redness went away for a very short time)

Also, limiting fragrances and other irritants has really helped!

@whoberry That link was really helpful. LO has been on and off my boobs every half hour for hours now, reading that helps my sanity. I ALWAYS think, "You can't be hungry, you just ate!"

  • @jennyd321‌ Google the 5S's. They can be very helpful. Also, white noise, walking, putting in a carrier, a warm bath, going outside as a change of scenery...

yes! I think that too. When he spits up I always think "see you weren't hungry! You didn't have room for that! "

Going outside works for us! LO calms right down as soon as we step out the door.

  • So I THINK this is normal, but I'm going to ask anyway, I was snuggling with DD and she was asleep, and she was dreaming. She started making noises (not uncommon), and I looked down and her eyes were open and moving around. Now I apparently used to sleep with one eye open, but it totally freaked me out. Normal for LOs to dream like this? :-/

A bath always helped DD1 calm down. Or going outside.

Yep. LO does this and it's super creepy sometimes. I don't ever know if he is awake or asleep.
  • Thanks, ladies. I'll try the outside thing. A bath won't do it we tried and it made things worse.

  • My baby is 6 weeks old and was born at 7 lbs even... She went down to 6 lbs 9 oz when we left the hospital. At her one week she was 7 lbs 14 oz and the doctor seemed like that was a lot... Almost too much or something. LO now has chubby thighs and starting to get little rolls already. Can babies gain too much weight? We don't get seen by pedi until 2 months, so a couple weeks yet

  • I need advice on separation anxiety. The only time LO will sleep alone is in the car seat after a drive. We just leave him in the seat in our living room and he can usually sleep 3 hours. He hates his swing. At night time I nurse him and he falls asleep. If I put him down he wakes up. Since our nights usually include colic I just end up bed sharing with him to get done rest. Once we are done with our MOTN feeding I try to transfer him to his crib and he fusses nonstop. I console him, offer a paci, wait and nothing works. If I want to sleep I would have to hold him again or go on the couch to let him fuss away in the bedroom. Should I invest in a co-sleeper? He is 6 weeks and I'm worried I am starting bad habits. Plus I neglecting time with DH. Advice please

  • @Katieluc106‌ we had the same thing, only luckily it happened a day before an appt we had anyways, I asked and he said it was fine but I had to clean it out with alcohol swabs 2 times a day for 3 days... He said if it didn't clear up after that, they would have to do something... It cleared up after the 2nd day
