Re: Longest Thread EVER! (aka Random Thoughts Thread )

  • Oops! I just realized dd has been napping for almost 3 hours. I have been trying to get her ready for bed between 8-9, but seeing how it's almost 8 and she's still napping, I don't think that's happening. She has been taking really short naps for a week or so, so this threw me for a loop! I don't know if I should wake her or just let it continue...decisions decisions

Amanda and Lia, I met you at the moms meet up, too! I don't post much on here but I guess I lurk (sorry everyone). It has been helping me feel less alone to read everyone's comments.

Can I join the A14 Facebook group?

Hey girl hey! Apparently our meet up was an unofficial bump meet up lol. I believe the girl whose son shared my daughter's birthday said she was a bump lurker too but probably on March.

Also, I'm jealous of the cloth diaper mom's. Mostly just because I think they're cute. We don't have a washer and dryer in our apartment though and I'm too cheap for a diaper service and too lazy to have more laundry that I have to leave the apartment to do.

  • Thank you! Nothing happened, I was born this way unfortunately :(. I think the heat is exacerbating everything. My jaw hurts from clenching all day. Not sure what it is, but I just can't calm down. And I accidentally just put sunscreen on Gavin instead of lotion after the bath.

@Vinny424 If you can sew at all you probably can make your own CD. I've made most of my stash and while I don't have an exact amount I know its saved me money. Not to mention I can get cuter diaper fabric to use than is available for most commercially made diapers.

Personally I love the Fattycakes pattern. Its easy and I like the way it fits my thunder thighed kids. I've also used the Darling Diapers pattern and liked it as well. The "downside" of the patterns I use is that they are sized instead of one size, so I have to make a stash for every size (break my heart  :D). But I feel like I get a better, trimmer fit with sized diapers and they just don't seem to make them anymore. There are patterns to make one size diapers yourself, but off the top of my head I don't know which ones. As for the inserts I gave up on making them myself. I didn't like doing it and I could never seem to get a good absorbency. I just used my outgrown prefolds as my inserts and it works great.

  • I have a GF that makes all her own diapers. And my student midwife made her own as well from wool sweaters she got at the thrift shop.
  • @Vinny424‌ EBF poops can be thrown in the wash so you really don't need liners if you EBF. Even when DD1 went to solids I used them only a handful of times and it was a PITA and I still had to spray the diapers out since it had poosploded over the liner. IMO it's just more work, but I might be the minority. Have occasionally used for rash creams before I learned there were CD safe creams.
  • Why are you using Vaseline? To prevent rashes? There are many CD safe and much healthier alternatives to petrol products. CJs Butter makes a great one (and great scents), and grandma Elle's, groves magic stick to name a couple. Or plan virgin coconut oil works wonders. I'm sure others have good recommendations on their favorite creams.
  • I just had the weirdest pumping session. I decided to pump before bed in case dd sleeps long again, and I got a little over 4 oz out of righty and only 1 out of lefty.

  • I use coconut oil to prevent diaper rash with my cloth diapers. Works well for me.

But lets say I contain myself and go the cheaper route. Am I looking at $300? More? Less?

Another thing to consider is there is a great market for used diapers ... CD didn't work out for us for DD but we were able to sell them for about 80^% of what we paid! So if it doesn't work out-- probably not a huge loss (and most people love it!)

  • I'm having a rough morning. DS1 is 2 and been complaining about headaches for almost 2 months now. He goes to the eye dr today to test his eyes and I feel awful but I'm hoping it's his eyes. I feel awful for hoping he has to deal with bad vision. If it isn't vision, they want to do brain wave testing and check for seizures. They want to scan his head again and make sure everything is still ok. Those options all scare me a lot more than glasses.
  • It really sucks when it's not the baby that wakes you up in the MOTN. We woke up to the sound of sirens and can see the start of yet another fire across the valley. Pretty scary to wake up and see a bright orange glow in the sky out of our bedroom window. Let's hope they can get it out fast and safely. There's already been two big fires here in NorCal that are so close to home - I could really go without another!

Big hugs @kseccomb17‌! Anxiety sucks so much :( One weird thing that helps me is to give myself a deadline for being anxious. So I'll say "At 2 o'clock, it'll be over, at 2 o'clock I can calm down, just 10 more min and then it'll be ok..." Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Big kudos to you for taking care of you LO while dealing with anxiety!

@Jenmoak - that is scary! Glad you guys are safe and prayers that there won't be anymore fires in the area!

  • Skipping 100 posts - you ladies are busy!

I just went to update my iPhone and it encountered an error and it's totally wiped. Fingers crossed my restore brings back all the newborn pictures of LO. I might have a breakdown at work if it doesn't

Our town is completed plastered with speculation over a 15 month old who died in a hot car yesterday. There isn't a lot of information, but it hints that the dad forgot to drop off for daycare. I feel so so sick for the poor baby and his family and ragey over all of the assholes who want a name so they can gossip and point fingers. Like the parents are not destroyed enough already. I just can't even imagine, it's like my biggest fear. DH is on drop off duty and I made him swear up and down that he puts his bag in the backseat so this doesn't happen.
I read about this last night while I was nursing! What a sad, sad event. :-(

  • Soooo taking Merri swimming this afternoon. I have a suit and a rash guard and a terry cloth cover up and a cute little sun hat. I also have a swim diaper...cover? Just wondering if anyone knows how to deal with the diaper situation when it comes to swimming. I'm pretty clueless.

I'm pretty clueless too, but what we did is take him down in his normal dipe, switch to swim right before we took him in the water, then when we came back out, dried off and back in the normal diaper.

  • Re: The AC and humidity. I'm in Northern Kentucky and am dealing with this constantly. We have a teeny tiny apartment, so keeping it cool is pretty easy. I keep the AC set around 74 for most of the day, but when it's nearing bed time for Merriwether we crank it down to 70 so she's not a sweaty beast while sleeping. Doing this late at night is pretty nice because it tends to be cooler. Then in the morning when I wake up for the 4-6 am nursing session I put the AC back onto 74. It usually doesn't kick back on until noon.

    Oops accidentally posted
  • Did anyone other than me read the article on kelly mom about colic potentially being early migraines?
  • I also hate summer because of the heat. 107 expected on Monday. Eff that.

Swim diapers- we just have 1 reusable one. It's an iplay. I get him ready right before walking out the door- he wears a swim diaper, long sleeved/pants swim "suit", hat, and life jacket. I change him back to regular clothes before coming back from the pool. Has worked great every time!

So on Sunday, DD woke up with a bright red and puffy eyelid. It was also a little dry. Her eye itself wasn't red. We called nurses line and they asked all these question. They said to call back if it got worse and to call doc on Monday.

I called Monday and wasn't able to get an appt until Tuesday morning. Her eye got a lot better by then. Luckily I took pictures of it. Right now it's just dry skin on eye lid.

The doctor thinks it might be some type of infection based on pictures and what she saw, so she prescribed some drops. If it doesn't improve in 10 days, we go back next week. She has dry skin behind the ears too.

I think it might be eczema, but I'm no doctor. I've been putting aquaphor on her ears to help with the scratching.

Hopefully whatever it is, it clears up soon. She's been a trooper through all of this. Giving the eye drops suck though.
LO has the very dry skin behind her ears too. Dried, cracking, scabbing. I've been putting vaseline on them and it has helped a lot. I'm worried about eczema but my mother is reassuring me that a lot of times spit up just gets trapped back there and irritates the skin. Let me know if your doc says anything about it!

@KendraColeslaw‌ what kind of cut are you going for?
  • That's it: I'm officially putting a "no soliciting" sign on my front door. If ONE more person comes and rings my bell, I'm gonna lose it. What typically ensues is my dog maniacally barking followed by a tired baby being woken up from his nap. I DO NOT NEED YOUR SERVICES! GO AWAY!! The poor young man who just rang my doorbell just received a raging glare of fury. At least he won't come back!
  • @Jennmoak‌ I hope things have settled down around there. That is scary to be in the summer danger zone where fire nearby could happen any day. We deal with similar fire issues in the mountains of CO and I have been thinking a lot lately about our new evac plan with baby.
