I can't believe she's acting like it's not a big deal. After shopping one day I let DS climb into his seat, closed his car door and opened the back of the car to put all our bags inside. I had every intention of going back to that side of the car and buckling him after I got everything in the car. I had a pregnancy brain moment and got in the car myself and when I turned around to back up realized that he was just sitting in his seat not buckled. I felt like a bad mother and I hadn't even left my parking space
My FFFC: The bump actually made me cry today and I never thought the internet could make me cry. And I'm not even blaming hormones.
I read her confession and everyone's responses-- her nonchalant attitude about the whole thing and the picture of the adorable boy in her siggy made me burst out crying. I honestly feel so bad for that child.
However, was influenced me the most were my parent's friends. They lost their son in a car accident. He was crying, mom took him out of his car seat to comfort him, they got in a accident and he went flying through the window.
Question (Mods and other Bump administrators?) - if a poster admits to willful neglect and child endangerment that could result in the death of their child, what is the protocol? Do you have their personal info? Could you notify authorities?
Usually FFFCs are for somewhat flame worthy but harmless confessions, but this is someone blatantly admitting to endangering their child.
Visiting from J15, so I guess that's my FFFC.

No, we can't even see IP addresses. There is nothing I or Beej can do.
My FFFC: I am about to go buy a bottle of wine and have a glass. I have been cleaning like Cinderella all day (with an infant and a toddler running interference). My MIL has the kids for a few hours. This thread has made me lose all faith in humanity (again, damn you internet).
Feel free to flame. My doc says a glass of wine is fine, but I will totally read all comments telling me that I am a bad person . . .while I enjoy my glass of wine.
(I figured it was only fair to add my confession since I flamed someone else.)
I guess this is a confession then...I don't like cheese curds. DH is from WI and was excited to introduce me to them because I love all things cheese usually. I was not impressed. DH thinks I'm broken.
There is something wrong with you. I am a Wisconsin native and thou I no longer live there, I am forever addicted to fresh squeaky curds.
Last night I made DH take me to see The Fault in our Stars. It was freezing cold in the theater so I made him remove his tshirt and give it to me (he had another one on under it. Once the movie got going, I began to cry so vigorously I thought I might get kicked out and then I used the tshirt as a snot rag. I'm classy like that. Now, I remember why I never allow myself to see those type movies in the theater.

I am utterly speechless. Carseat safety is my hill to die on. My son is 3.5 and still rf'ing. We bought him a larger convertible when he outgrew his smaller one just so that he could rear face to 4. I would never in a million years consider not buckling him in for any length of time. Why? Because he is precious to me and I might kill myself if I ever somehow caused his death. I just ask you @kiranata to please consider what you have to lose if you were ever in an accident with your little guy not buckled in. It's not worth it.
I can not believe any one could have such a nonchalant attitude about effing motor vehicle safety!!!
My FFFC- (and believe me, I flamed myself for hours)- Once I was visiting my parents, and my H and I had taken different cars due to scheduling changes. He had taken the baby's car seats out of his car and put it into mine. (The older two have multiple seats, so I already had some for them in mine)
When I left, I admit, I was in a hurry to avoid the bedtime melt downs. I buckled in the kids, and drove home. It take aprox 15 mins to get to my house from my parents. When I got home and undid their seats, I discovered that my H had just set the seat into my car, and it was not buckled in or latched to the actual car seat.
I cried for two hours. I called my parents, my husband, and my PASTOR to apologize. I felt like the worst parent in the world.
I now check every single buckle in the car. Seat buckle/latch system, and car seat buckles. I am obsessive.
What are some of the rf seats that you guys are able to take beyond two?
There are so many. Car seats for Little Ones is a great facebook group to join for car seat info. They can suggest one for you. I also really like this website for reviews.
This!!! It is a seriously awesome carseat. I feel like my kid could take a direct hit in that and walk away. It is extremely sturdy. Plus it is rear facing forever, then a forward facing carseat, then a booster. It is safe to use as a booster until your kid is 150 lbs (don't be that mom unless there is a reason. lol).
I forgot to buckle my daughter's car seat exactly once. When I got home and realized, I cried, squeezed her super hard, and cuddled with her for the rest of the day. I couldn't stop thinking about what could have happened. I have NEVER forgotten again.
My FFFC: I asked my husband for chili tonight and now I'm hiding in our bedroom because it is making me nauseous and I don't want to tell him I don't want it after he worked so hard.

I completely want to 'diet' and lose a few lbs. I know it's completely safe for me to lose weight as log as I'm eating enough, and I eat way too much. I'm just so lazy lately and love food.
In May of 2013, my father drove my daughter one mile to the library , he was going 25 miles per hour. A car cut him off and he swerved. Our 4Runner wound up rolling over and smashing into a tree and came to rest upside down. My father was severely hurt, my daughter emerged with one small scratch on her, the car was split almost fully in half where it wrapped around the tree. A car seat, properly installed and with her properly placed and buckled in, saved her life that day.
Any mother thay cannot take thirty seconds to secure their child does not deserve a child. Health and safety are the most basic responsibilities of a parent. I am disgusted by you and hope that your abject disregard for the most basic of parental responsibilities does not result in a tragedy for the innocent that has the misfortune of having you as a parent.
@lucilleaustero- I am so sorry that happened to your father and daughter! Thank God she was okay! I cant imagine the guilt a person feels when they are driving a vehicle with a child and they are in an accident (even one they are not at fault for)

I just got DD a Nextfit after research and I know it is a good seat I just really hadn't heard of rf for longer than two years. My DD is pretty petite, so I imagine this seat will accommodate. With my DS we all switched our kids at one year, but that was 11 years ago. I am really just learning about new recommendations now that my DD is getting bigger and we made the switch. We are thinking of just getting a convertible with this one since we never took the infant seat out. It might make more sense for us to invest in one really good one, so I want to make sure it has some life. My DS was in some sort of seat or booster until he was almost eight. It was a scary day the first time I let him ride without. Thanks for the info.

Thank you. Getting that phone call from the hospital was the most horrific moment and I cannot wrap my mind around any mother just not caring enough to possibly prevent serious harm to their child. I still cry and feel guilty every single time I think about what could have happened and we are responsible parents. I am so angry right now.
In all my life I have NEVER said this but I actually feel sorry for your child!
Let me expand that thought, I feel sorry for your child who relies on you to make safe choices for them and to keep them safe. What you did was not just irresponsible it was life threatening and illegal. If I knew where you lived I would call CPS. Not because I am a bish but because I think you deserve it. Or at least your child deserves someone protecting them. I am no MOTY but I am disgusted by your nonchalance and complete disregard for your child's safety.
And while I'm still here and beating a dead horse re ff vs rf:
I have an expensive carseat that goes up to 70lbs ff 40lbs rf. I was told kids don't hit 40lbs till like 4. Well guess what, my big ol 2yo (will be 2 next week) is 37" 41.5 lbs. Girlfriend outgrew that before 2. The rf vs ff debate is one of those that gets beaten to death a million times over. Trust, we will revisit it again.
I always feel a little guilty about turning her but being FF with 3 hooks and less swaying is a lot safer than her rf and swaying when I turn because she's too heavy for the seat. So sometimes rf past 2 isn't feasible. But ya, let's buckle them in please.

caden1206 The next fit is a great seat! several of my friends have it and they all love it. With my next child I plan to skip the infant seat and go straight to a convertible. We switched at 6 months with the last one and I'd rather put the money towards a great seat he will use for a long time.
As a FTM and having never placed a kid in a car seat, is it really that difficult and time consuming?
Nope.
They might fight you once and a while, but it takes much less time than the consequences of not doing it.
I can't even imagine knowingly putting my child at risk because I can't be bothered with a FUCKING BUCKLE.
$9.99 shoes are more important!!!!!!111!1!
Can we also discuss rear vs front facing? I was reading an article that even if you think your kid's legs are squished, if you put them rear facing to early in an accident they can/will break their neck and if they remain rear facing they may break a leg. I choose leg over neck. (But then again I am not sure how true that article is)
I'm at work so I have no sound on my computer but I think this is the video I've seen shared regarding the extended rf debate.
My family thinks it's silly to rf after a year and I have many friends that still believe the old 1 y/o or 20lbs thing. Hopefully word is spreading though how much safer it is to rf beyond a year.
Okay, so I think I've decided that my baby is facing backward in the backseat until age 18
But seriously, after being a crash that wasn't even high speeds but still resulted in me having to take an ambulance to the hospital and suffering a concussion, I always ALWAYS buckle up and I demand everyone in my car does the same - it's what saved me from far worse injuries. Unless you've been in a crash, it's hard to really grasp how quickly something can happen.
As a FTM, the carseat is one of those things that stresses me out the most. Pretty sure I'll have a freak out if I realize I didn't put the chest clip up high enough, so I can't even imagine leaving without buckling them up. Cars are giant pieces of metal going at high speeds driving by a high % of morons... don't risk the most important, helpless person in your life to save a few seconds.

I have a tendency not to believe some of this crazy stuff. I can understand making a mistake, but letting your laziness take priority over the safety of a child is really something I can't fathom a mother ever doing. I hope someone is not that selfish. I am probably naive and I can only hope she is really trying to just get a rise out of people.
I will give high fives to everyone who is advocating for proper car seat safety. I am pretty sure you guys are helping moms think twice and hopefully ensure their child is safe. I love learning about better ways to care for my kiddos.
@jfresh I'm not defending her in any way. I honestly don't know if it's exaggerated or not. Given some other things I'm hoping exaggerated. I feel conflicted to say the least.

I was taking LO to the zoo when he was still very young and I had thought I had buckled him in. I was so worried that I moved the rear view mirror to double check. I hadn't so I pulled over as soon as I could so that I could buckle him in.
One thing we did was made sure that all primary people that would be transporting my son had their own child seat for him. That way we never had to play musical car seats and hope that his seat was buckled in correctly. It cost us a little more since we have had to buy car seats for MIL since she takes care of our son while we are at work but it is so worth it.
Finally, as a Mechanical Engineer, it is better to follow the guidelines for the car seat that you have instead of following other guidelines. If you want to keep your LO rear facing until 18, please spend the money to get a car seat that will do this.
One of my pet peeves is the people who have "Baby On Board" or children then they are not paying attention to their driving. Yesterday, a mom was paying more attention to her daughter than to the fact that she was driving on a limited access busy highway.
Just watched the video and can't stop crying. That poor little angel. If nothing else this was a lesson to us all. I can't even fathom how his mom felt.
I don't have anything more to add that posters haven't already covered, but I just wanted to throw my vote in for "buckle your child's freakin' car seat! Always! Not just when you totally feel like it or when it's a long trip!" It's totally worth the 30 second "hassle" for the assurance of safety for your child.
Oh, another public safety announcement, there has been 13 deaths so far this year because people were too lazy to take their LO out of the car during hot weather in the day time. Had a friend who works at our local Children's hospital post a video about this. Also, if you see this, call the police and have them take care of the LO, you could save a life.
...I ate raw cake batter for breakfast today. FFFC.
No words on that car seat nonsense. I really hope you can see the good and logic in what was said. Your baby boy deserves the best you can give him. I suggest you start doing that.
May Siggy Challenge = Linda Belcher!! Hands down, my favorite TV mom!
I honestly just can't with the original car seat poster because she is not hearing it. If one good thing can come out of this, it's that maybe some people who read this thread learned something about car seat safety and will do some more research. Car seat safety is a passion of mine and I spend a good amount of time advocating for extended rear facing and helping people choose and use a proper seat. Please always remember that a car seat isn't a piece of gear - it's a life saving device so read your manual front to back (twice) and never be afraid to ask questions to make sure you've got it right.
I hope with everything I have that her little boy and new baby never ever suffer for her lazy and neglectful behavior.
Graco Headwise/MySize/Size4Me (they are all the same)
These seats are all ERF seats. There is pros and cons to each of them. However, my general theory is this. If your child is tall and skinny get either the Nextfit or the Graco clones. These 2 have the tallest shells out there and can easily RF height wise until 4-6 years of age, the down side is that they only have a RFing weight limit of 40lbs. For tall and hefty kids get the Foonf. This seat is amazing, but it's a beast. It has a really long life shell wise, great engineering, great features, and a RFing weight limit of 50lbs. If you like the sound of the Foonf but have a smaller car and need a slimmer profile seat, get the Diono Pacifica. This seat also has a RF weight of 50lbs and a tall shell, but with the angle adjuster is very slim. For small cars the 2 I suggest are the Diono Radian (with angle adjuster, RF weight til 45lbs) and the Chicco Nextfit.
I also like to caution new buyers against Britax seats. They used to be the best there was. However, when the redesigned their seats to accommodate a larger RF weight limit they shrunk the shells. For the price your paying for one of those seats it's not worth it. More so if your outgrowing the RF limits before 2.
