Did you know that at 30mph the force of any kind of impact is enough to kill you? Just the secondary impact of your internal organs hitting your bone structures, if the initial impact of hitting the front seat or being ejected through the windshield doesn't kill you first. As someone who works on an ambulance, who has to respond to things like this, I can tell you first hand how very little it takes for any kind of car accident to become fatal. The 1 minute it takes to ensure your child is properly buckled and restrained is the difference between life and death. And regardless of how frequently or infrequently you did it, it only takes being in the wrong place at the wrong time ONCE to change your life forever.
This is my soapbox. There is NO EXCUSE for ever not buckling a child in.
As a FTM and having never placed a kid in a car seat, is it really that difficult and time consuming?
Nope.
They might fight you once and a while, but it takes much less time than the consequences of not doing it.
I can't even imagine knowingly putting my child at risk because I can't be bothered with a FUCKING BUCKLE.
$9.99 shoes are more important!!!!!!111!1!
Agree wholeheartedly, save the occasional tantrum most times it takes less than 30 seconds to strap them in... as annoying as it might be knowing you are going to unstrap them in 3 minutes it is still worth doing EVERY TIME. @kiranata I'm sure that no amount of people on a message board telling you it is wrong is not going to change your mind so keep on keeping on I guess, but next time just consider the consequences.

Can we also discuss rear vs front facing? I was reading an article that even if you think your kid's legs are squished, if you put them rear facing to early in an accident they can/will break their neck and if they remain rear facing they may break a leg. I choose leg over neck. (But then again I am not sure how true that article is)
When I get home tonight I'll post about the difference between rear and front facing. A good friend of mine has endless information about this topic

You are correct!
I haven't looked at her link but if her child is too tall to RF the current seat, it's probably an infant seat. Her kid is a toddler and needs a convertible seat with a 5pt harness to REAR FACE. I'm too upset over he seatbelt to focus on the other dangers she is putting her kid in.
I worked hard to get this baby, and you better be damn sure I'm buckling him/her in 100% of the time. I don't like to judge, but wow. This is stupid. I hope you NEVER have to learn the hard way.

That's the gist of it! And it's also the argument I give when people ask why DD is still rear-facing (not to mention she's only 16 mos old)- I'd much rather deal with broken legs than a broken neck. I'll keep her RFing until at least 2 if not longer.
(Although- I will say that another mom-board friend of mine whose husband is a fireman says that if the kid is rear-facing and the car is rear-ended, that internal decapitation is still a possibility. This is not an aspect I have looked further into.)

You are right @BankerBSN. Although law says you can put them forward facing at 1 as long as they are 22 lbs and walking the recommendation is keeping them rear facing until 2. And just like you said if forward facing too soon in an accident they could break their neck vs rear facing and breaking their leg(s). DD is tall for her age, but she is still rear facing. Sure her legs are a bit squished, but she is not uncomfortable. And she can put up with it for a few more months to keep her safe.

I'm at work so I have no sound on my computer but I think this is the video I've seen shared regarding the extended rf debate.
My family thinks it's silly to rf after a year and I have many friends that still believe the old 1 y/o or 20lbs thing. Hopefully word is spreading though how much safer it is to rf beyond a year.

Shoe snob? Ha. Payless is just the only place I can get 6.5's for the toddler (you know how they say their feet grow at an alarming rate? Yeah, not so much with this kid) Oh and for the mom asking about RF vs FF and broken legs and such, yeah, that is true. A still crosses his legs in his seat, so I wish I could still RF him, but he outgrew the guidelines on it. I was actually REALLY excited that he crossed his legs and didn't mind rear facing, then he shot the fuck up there and I had to begrudgingly switch his seat around.
Buy a new seat. And use it like you're supposed to, buckles and all.
Eta it bothers me that you read the manual enough to know the height/weight but won't use the most important part of the seat.
@kiranata Stop being lazy and buckle your kid in. My mom had five of us and managed to make sure everyone was buckled in safely before leaving the driveway, regardless of how long the trip was. Your child can't protect himself yet, that's your job.

If I ever saw someone not buckling their kid in & then driving, I would be on the phone with the police in a hot second.
Also, it's like you're bragging about not buckling your kid in. This is so mind-boggling to me.
I have done this, at target actually. A baby was riding on a lap in the front seat. I called the non emergency PD line. They sent an officer to collect a statement from me in person. I gave a description of the event, the plate and vehicle info, and the police pursued it.
I called the cops from the Target parking lot once too- someone had left their sleeping baby in the car. I watched them get out, smoke a cigarette, and go into the store. So I called!
@OP- one of my sisters friends HAD the same belief as you. That a 3 minute car ride doesn't need a seatbelt. When they arrived at their 'Payless' or wherever, and the mom opened the car door, her daughter tipped herself out of the car seat and fell on the pavement before her mom could catch her. She cracked her skull and things were pretty bad for a while. An accident with another vehicle isn't the only thing that could happen.

I know I'm piling on, but you're ridiculous if you don't think this is serious @Kiranata
No one has been nasty to you, so I hope you can take the safety concerns at face value and understand that you need to protect your child by buckling him in, period.
Also I really hope that you guys would rip me a new asshole if I EVER do something that is against the law or is a danger to my child's life. I would be glad to hear it from you than to regret my child being harmed or dying because I was an idiot for a hot second.
FFFC: I ALWAYS buckle my kid into his car seat regardless of how far I'm going. And I schooled DH before DS was born on proper car seat safety. Also DS will probably RF til damn near 4 bc a) he's a squirt and b) I did my own research and got a good car seat. I don't like to name call but @kiranata you're kind of a twat waffle for putting your kid in so much danger and being so nonchalant about it.
Sorry, preachy bishes make me not care. Or I'm sorry, is the interwebs serious business?
The internet is not, your child's life on the other hand, is.

Wow - okay. So you do something that is illegal and that endangers your child, and the ladies on this board are preaching bishes for calling you out on it? Your child's safety IS serious business. The ladies on here care about that. Even if you don't.

I really can't believe you're joking about this. Maybe I'm naive but I was kind of hoping you would be able to acknowledge your serious, serious lapse in judgement here and promise to never do it again. But your cavalier attitude makes me think you are a really shitty person and mom.
I totally agree with this. What kind of person jokes about this? Unless she's trolling us just for the reaction - which I kind of hope is the case because I'd rather be trolled by an idiot than to know that there's a mother out there who is so stupid that she doesn't see the reason to buckle her kid up when she's driving. Ugh.
Sorry, preachy bishes make me not care. Or I'm sorry, is the interwebs serious business?
Your complete dismissiveness here just makes me sad. It's one thing to do something dumb or dangerous, and admit to it... but to be so openly dismissive of people who clearly are concerned for your child's safety and have given you thoughtful and rational reasons to reconsider your choice to endanger your child is pretty appalling.

@Kiranata, I'm a CPST tech. I have to educate people all the time, but I've never had to do this. Buckling your child into the seat is so important. I don't care if it's for only 2-3 minutes to the next store. Your more likely to get into a crash taking that turn out of the parking lot that anything. Your risking your childs life, and that just isn't cool. If god forbid you did get into a crash your child would be completely unprotected from the seat and become a projectile in the car. I've had to use this video many many time, but never to show why you buckle a seat in. This mothers story is heart breaking. Please, please, please learn from this and buckle your child in properly.
As a FTM and having never placed a kid in a car seat, is it really that difficult and time consuming?
No, and by 2 years old P practically did it herself. But since I'm not an irresponsible or reckless parent I always checked it.
Sounds like she is the kind of parent that will not find in necessary to use a booster when her child is "tall enough". P rode in a booster until 2nd grade. She hated me for it!
It also hasn't been pointed out that most accidents happen within 5 miles of home. Or when there iS a distraction in the car (like an unbuckled toddler).Meaning you don't have to be driving an hour for an accident to happen.
Idiot... This may be one if the most shameful FFFC I have seen in my almost 3 years on the bump. Shame on you!
Oh and one other thing you are the kind of person that make people's insurance rates increase. Medical claims are expensive and 90% of the time are the reason car insurance rates increase. So you also make my job suck thanks a lot @kiranata

Thank you so much for sharing that video. It is heart breaking to watch, I can't stop crying. I hope that none of you ever think for a sec that not buckling a kid in, even just to drive across the parking lot, is ok.
I'm glad that she confessed to doing it, because she needed to hear this all badly. Even if she never admits to it on here I pray that she realizes how drastic the consequence of her actions can be and changes her ways from today on.
I love the RFing myths too. I use it a lot to show that RFing is possible beyond the age of 1 and even beyond the age of 2! My almost 4 year old still fits RFing in her seat!
