  as for the HP, eh whatever, I think it's dumb to ban something like that from your kids, but if that's what you want to do, more power to you. It's not like banning HP from your household is literally going to harm your children.   I think it depends on the reasoning behind it. I hate Sponge Bob and my son is/will not be allowed to watch it. But I think it's inappropriate, not educational whatsoever, and only teaches children to be obnoxious. Plus I've seen a few articles out there linking to ADHD (not sure of the validity).
  
  That said, there are things I don't care for that my son can watch or read. As long as they are appropriate or educational I don't mind. For example, I really don't enjoy Sesame Street. But if he likes it, fine.

  My parents forbade Ren & Stimpy, the Simpsons, and other things I don't even remember... While it was irritating to me at the time in retrospect I respect their rationale. They were concerned about the attitude of the characters teaching me that it was ok to be disrespectful. I get it, and I might even make the same decision show by show when I start scoping things out.
  
  But in Harry Potter the recurrent themes are loyalty, bravery, friendship, love, inclusivity... Which is why I am looking forward to @ambershaw512‌ explaining her reasons.

  I guess my UO is I don't see any problem with not introducing something that you can't stand.  Selfish? Sure.  But I'm down with keeping something out of my house for as long as I possibly can control it.
  
  If my kid finds out about it through school, a friend's house, or like my niece, a trip to Disney, then fine...he wins. I'm not going to forbid something that's appropriate if he likes it, but I sure as shit don't have to introduce it myself if its going to drive me nuts.

  To be honest, I rarely listened to the ppl I drew blood from. I'd make the judgement for myself when I palpated for veins. Sometimes they were right and I'd pull out the hot packs and butterfly needle...other times they were wrong and they'd have a beautiful vein that was just a little deep.
  
  However, she could have been like one of my coworkers who was cocky as hell and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I'm sorry you had to get more pokes than necessary...that's a pain in the ass.

  Okay I am with you on the copays, and the registry woes. That's dumb shit. But I don't think it's fair to attack someone for considering an induction so DH could be there. Especially because it's an idea brought up by a doctor. DH missing the birth is a huge deal. Obviously like I said there, I decided it's not worth an induction or c section that's unnecessary, but I did consider it because I didn't want him to miss seeing his first child be born.   Im with @mrsdanielleM2010‌ I never watched the things that my mom didn't want me to watch (harry potter) because of the witchcraft/sorcery. My mom wouldnt let my sister and i watch cinderella because the cats name is lucifer. I tried to watch some of HP once at SIL but I just couldn't even get through it. Yea I get most Disney movies are "magic" but they are cartoons they make children use their imaginations. Harry potter uses real people which makes children believe its real and its borderline scary. I guess its more of i don't like the "real" perspective of sorcery. The little mermaid is DDs favorite movie, I mean clearly there's witch craft there (the seawitch turns the mermaid into a human,using spells and magic) its just different to me. If she wants to watch it when she's older then fine but not until they move out of my house.
  
  When my 10 yr old brother watches spongebob or those stupid shows on cartoon network like yo gabba gabba and the magic world of gumball or whatever it is, then I make him turn it because I don't like them. If he watches it at home I don't care but its the way I feel about the shows.

  It's called fantasy. Kids are smarter than you think and are able to separate HP from real life. Also, the implication here that magic is evil makes me mad....read up on paganism and Wicca.

  I am going to have to disagree with you here. Maybe it's because I read the books before the movies, but  I think HP promotes just as much imagination as Disney. Plus I actually appreciate the themes that HP promotes more than a Disney Princess movie. Toughness, family, loyalty... Hermione is one of the strongest female characters out there and I'd rather my DD (not having one but if I did) emulate her than Cinderella. And this is coming from someone that adores Disney movies!

  
  

  I also agree with @brittneyandadam, that kids are much smarter than people give them credit for. Do I think a 5 year old should watch HP and the Deathly Hallows? Not so much, but do I think he'll be able to differentiate between real and fantasy once he get's older? Yes.

  The magic in Harry Potter is so clearly fantasy though - I agree that parts, especially later in the series, are appropriate for certain ages only, but otherwise I see no harm.

  Shouldn't you be able to teach them that it's just pretend, just like cartoons? What about video games? Tabletop games? Other books that involve magic? Imagination is good. Magic things will not really happen if your children wave sticks around like wands. 
  
  This is the same stupid shit my dad said to me and why HP wasn't allowed in our house. FYI I kept the books in my car and look who's planning an HP nursery now (he's pissed). If you are going to be the type of weirdo that doesn't allow magic in your house, at least be consistent and don't allow any Disney, fairly odd parents, lord of the rings or basically most children's stories.
