Im with @mrsdanielleM2010 I never watched the things that my mom didn't want me to watch (harry potter) because of the witchcraft/sorcery. My mom wouldnt let my sister and i watch cinderella because the cats name is lucifer. I tried to watch some of HP once at SIL but I just couldn't even get through it. Yea I get most Disney movies are "magic" but they are cartoons they make children use their imaginations. Harry potter uses real people which makes children believe its real and its borderline scary. I guess its more of i don't like the "real" perspective of sorcery. The little mermaid is DDs favorite movie, I mean clearly there's witch craft there (the seawitch turns the mermaid into a human, using spells and magic) its just different to me. If she wants to watch it when she's older then fine but not until they move out of my house. When my 10 yr old brother watches spongebob or those stupid shows on cartoon network like yo gabba gabba and the magic world of gumball or whatever it is, then I make him turn it because I don't like them. If he watches it at home I don't care but its the way I feel about the shows.
Shouldn't you be able to teach them that it's just pretend, just like cartoons? What about video games? Tabletop games? Other books that involve magic? Imagination is good. Magic things will not really happen if your children wave sticks around like wands.
This is the same stupid shit my dad said to me and why HP wasn't allowed in our house. FYI I kept the books in my car and look who's planning an HP nursery now (he's pissed). If you are going to be the type of weirdo that doesn't allow magic in your house, at least be consistent and don't allow any Disney, fairly odd parents, lord of the rings or basically most children's stories.
I'm only reading the newspaper to my kid at night. No fake ass magic bed time stories at my house!

My aunt did not allow her children to believe in Santa because she thought if they found out he was fake, they would think the same about god, but she also used to spank us, (her nieces), so there's that...
I find the HP debate very interesting... I grew up in a very Christian household, but my mom never sheltered us from magic or other "evils" out there (which I don't believe magic is evil anyway). There is value in entertainment and imagination. The Christian college that I attended actually had a very interesting class on why Harry Potter is still totally appropriate for everyone, regardless of beliefs (this was during the time that a lot of the bad hype started about how it was against religious beliefs to watch/read HP). What are you afraid will happen if your child sees magic/sorcery and thinks it's real anyway??
I'm not afraid for her to see magic/ sorcery her favorite movie is little mermaid, she watches it 100 times a week. I was never sheltered from evils. But let me say this again, if my children want to watch or decorate in harry potter @lstrejcek then fine but it won't be in my house. I don't like lord of the rings I think its stupid and it actually scared me the first time I watched it, my children won't be allowed to watch that either. I just don't like things like that and it won't be watched in my house.
I never said waving a magic wand or playing dress up was going to magic happen. All kid shows make them use their imaginations and that's perfectly fine, I don't think a 5 yr old should watch harry potter. I don't think magic is evil, but it also depends on how it is used. And where in the hell did anyone get that I said imagination or magic is bad? I said its the difference between cartoons and real people. Its much easier for a child to see cailou or a Disney show and use their imagination rather than seeing real people and monsters from harry potter use sorcery. I also said nothing about religion.
There is nothing I'm afraid to show my children, I just don't want them to watch harry potter because I don't like it, I don't think its appropriate for children.
I thought childhood was all about using your imagination and playing pretend? Little girls can play princess, and dress-up. Little boys can play army and whatnot. Doesn't it promote good use of imagination? Get them outside? Get them away from the tv in general? Personally, I think a childhood spent with no Disney movies, or HP, or any type of fantasy/magic movies/shows would be pretty damn boring. Hell, even Cailou has pretend scenes of him using his imagination.I mean Santa, the Easter Bunny, even Halloween FFS.
I think if someone is avoiding magic because of religious reasons they aren't doing Santa, Easter Bunny or Halloween.
Yeah, probably so. But these were just examples of pretend/imagination/fantasy. I was more going with the not allowing your kids to watch fantasy programs because you are worried they won't understand the difference between real and make believe.
I'm not worried about the difference of real and fake, its the difference of sorcery used for evil and magic that's uses the imagination. They are so different.

@alexisann4250 Spanking is actually very common, even in religious families. Many will reference Proverbs 13:24 which says if you love your child you should discipline them (specifically with a rod). I certainly don't agree with this, but just noting that although it may seem counterintuitive, discipline and religion are linked.
I never said it wasn't common or how I felt about it, just that she felt comfortable spanking other people's kids. Which to me, is not ok.
Because kids NEVER think cartoon characters are real......
I can't wrap my head around the HP and LOTR hate, let alone banning it from your kids until they are out of the house. PPs already covered the various reasons why that is ridiculous.
Can we just bring back the good shows like Salute Your Shorts, Doug and Rugrats??? THOSE are shows I would gladly watch. I get anxious when my 12yo SD watches her Disney shows in the living room because the acting is so over the top!

But evil loses in Harry Potter. The message is that there are good and bad people in the world, which is reality even if some of them are magic and some aren't. In the end, good triumphs which makes Harry Potter redemptive... A Christian theme. Show your kids what you want, ban what you want... But now that I've seen your rationale I say I disagree completely.

Now I'm confused about what the issue is. In previous posts, you said that your issue with HP is that your child won't know the difference between real and fake (actors vs cartoons), then you said you don't want them to watch it because you don't like it / the movies scared you, and then the issue is that sorcery is used for evil and you are now not concerned about differentiating between real and fake. Have I kept track of this correctly? Obviously what you choose to let your children watch is totally up to you and fine, but know your reasoning for it and stick to it.
Its easy for kids to see cartoon and say fake and with real people its harder for them to understand its fake. I'm not worried between real and fake. Its evil and imagination. Disney, no let's go with barney, has magic everywhere but it shows kids how to use there imagination. Harry potter is sorcery and spells, there are monsters and evil blah blah. Its not creating a healthy imagination to me.

Says the person who got scared from watching LOTR...how old are you? It sounds like you're the one who can't differentiate real from fake....and way to go having zero faith in your kids ability to separate the two.
Also, guess what? There are bad people out there and you can't always shelter your kids from that. There are "monsters" and "evil" all around and not allowing them to watch a fantasy movie is not going to change that. What really kills me is you fail to see any good in these movies. I understand that the fantasy genre is not for everyone (I could never really get into HP myself), but just because something scared YOU doesn't mean it's going to scare your kids. Your inability to get any sort of good or beautiful message from those movies doesn't mean that they won't be inspired by the heroes/heroines and take away something that you could never see.
I'm going to leave you with some wise words...and something that makes me cry every time I read/hear it:
Sam: It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something...
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo...and it's worth fighting for.

I'm not one to tell people how to do their job because I don't want people to tell me how to do my job BUT when I walk in for blood work and tell the lady I have awful veins and butterfly needles usually work better please just take my word for it.
Nope she says I got this stabs me once and didn't get the vein, tries again, guess what she can't get the vein! Gives up and has another nurse do it, the other nurse uses a butterfly needle and gets it first try.
I was so upset she didn't listen to me! I was there for a 2 hour glucose test, should have only taken 3 needles instead since this woman knew what she was doing and didn't listen to me I ended up with 5 needles!
You seriously have the same UO as I did! I got stuck twice on Monday in both arms for the same reason. At my 3 hour today, two students tried and couldn't do it and the supervisor came over and had to do it. I had hear complete my last three draws...I am pissed and look like a junky now. Not to mention huge bruises all over my arms =(.
I have never actually seen/read Harry Potter (it was well after my childhood) so would have to actually see it before making my opinion about it... I don't have any opinion one way or the other at the moment.
I may get flamed for this but DH and I will not teach that Santa or Easter Bunny are real in our home. Sure, we will tell the stories, see it on cartoons/tv, have Santa decorations, talk about the history of St. Nicholas, do Easter egg hunts, etc... but we will not actually tell our kids that a man in a red suit comes into our home leaving presents or that a ginormous fluffy bunny leaves eggs in our yard. We will not sign gifts from Santa or the EB but we will read the Night Before Christmas, watch the Polar Express, eat chocolate bunnies, talk about the "story" of it, etc. It's a personal choice and yes it has a lot to do with our faith and keeping focused on that instead of telling our kids that myth is reality. I have no problem with others who do this of course. Flame Away...
As for not letting a kid see a particular show or movie, eh... to each their own. I may not agree with the rationale because yes I think kids can see myth vs reality. I love the magical story (with real actors) of Narnia written by the christian author with a christian story (CS Lewis) and my children will see that (and likely HP once I view it first). As I stated, I have no problem with my kids learning about the myth of magic, mermaids, talking animals in Disney, HP, Narnia, Mickey Mouse, Santa Claus or Easter Bunny as told in stories/legend but not to tell them any of it is reality. That being said, whatever... is it going to warp a child if he/she doesn't see HP or LOTR? Nah. NBD to me.
The one thing I would agree with is age appropriateness. Is it appropriate for a 5 year old to watch LOTR... not to me. To each their own but that is more of a violence/scary issue that I think is more appropriate for a 12-13 year old, not the content or idea of myth vs reality. I think kids should embrace, see and use their imagination so long as guiding parents keep reality vs myth in perspective. I love LOTR (also written by a Christian author with christian themes).
That all being said... I agree that many kids will still read/watch things their parents don't wish them too... part of growing up so it is important we DO teach them and let them see myth and reality.
I have a friend who does this. Her 2 year old is already taught that Santa is not real. I don't flame it. I understand your point but at the same time it makes me sad. Why not let your kids believe in magic? And I don't mean magic literally, and I'm also not directing this as you, Crystal. More of a rhetorical question. I just like the idea of myth and imagination when kids are young and don't need to be exposed to the reality of the world we live in just yet.

If students did your stick, they more than likely (at least I HOPE) asked your permission. They're students, ergo, they're still learning and making mistakes. I don't get how you're pissed. I know it sucks to get bruised up and it's a pain...but again: students.
Also, just a general comment...I hope everyone knows how much practice it takes to get GOOD at phlebotomy. It's hard and not everyone's veins aren't the same. We don't have x-ray vision and a lot of the time, we can't SEE the vein that we're going for/that's good enough to stick...we go by feel.

Ultrasounds are medical procedures, not Polaroid snapshots. They are to be taken seriously as diagnostic tools, and not done just for fun. This is especially for 3D and 4D done at some corner shop for no medical reason.

No, if they wanna read it somewhere else fine but not in my house.
See, I think this is even worse. I don't care what you permit for your kids. They are yours, not mine. But to say you don't mine them participating in something you disagree with as long as you don't see it? That's like saying they can't smoke pot in your house but they can at a friend's.
I'm confused as to who you are trying to help. It sounds like a very self-serving decision rather than one based on how you'd like to raise your kids

Oh dear. Was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt but banning books? That gets me all hot and bothered. Wow.
ETA: I don't even especially care about the movies. Like, whatever. But BOOKS? Especially books credited with reigniting many children's interest in reading. Makes me kind of sick actually. Curious as to whether you feel the same about other books that reference magic? Matilda, for example. Though clearly consistency isn't exactly your strong point.
Here is my UO for today...I'm really worried for how a lot of your kids are going to turn out, especially if you are having a girl, if you can't figure out how to solve basic problems in your everyday lives. The fact that a lot of you have a hard time having a REAL conversation with your doctor scares me, because it shows that you don't have the capacity to raise your daughters up as strong women. The same goes for those of you who have a hard time talking to your families, husbands or in-laws about real issues. Instead you come on here and complain about them as if we can tell you something to fix your problems. We can't. You would have to grow a vagina first and then, maybe, I could give you some advice.
@brittneyandadam im capable of seeing the difference between real and fake. I have faith that my kids can too, once they are taught. SIL kid is 6 and he wholeheartedly believes in HP and thinks its real but batman is fake. And he has been told but more than one person its fake. And just because Precious scared the shit out of me the first time I watched has nothing to do with why I won't show the movie to my kids.
@kaitlinr87 if they watch the movie or read the book somewhere else fine, I've already said this. But its not gonna happen in my house.
@bmwaters21 you have a good point. I guess when they are at the age that they can understand and school assignments like @brittneyandadam said then that will have to be a serious talk.
@AccioPizza im not banning all book, DD loves to read and I read to her every single day all day long. I just don't want my kids reading harry potter. When it comes time for them to be school assignments which I've never heard of then we will cross that bridge when it comes. But for now I stand by my opinion that my kids will not be allowed to read or watch HP.

I'm not worried about the difference of real and fake, its the difference of sorcery used for evil and magic that's uses the imagination. They are so different.

You don't like real life actors doing it, but it's okay for cartoons...but your not worried about real vs fake? It's a stretch and it sounds like you're not really sure why you don't want your kids watching it. Your posts contradict each other and you sound like an ignorant control freak.
I can't wrap my head around the HP and LOTR hate, let alone banning it from your kids until they are out of the house. PPs already covered the various reasons why that is ridiculous.

Exactly.
How do you figure? What about when you go to Disney or other such places and you see these cartoon characters "brought to life" by people in suits??

You seriously have the same UO as I did! I got stuck twice on Monday in both arms for the same reason. At my 3 hour today, two students tried and couldn't do it and the supervisor came over and had to do it. I had hear complete my last three draws...I am pissed and look like a junky now. Not to mention huge bruises all over my arms =(.
Also, I freaking love HP. I have a secret crush on Hermione as the MN for this baby girl
but would she even understand the connection? having not read the books, nor watched one entire movie? yet somehow finding them to have no redeeming qualities? yeah, right.
this thread is making me stabby.

I'm confused as to who you are trying to help. It sounds like a very self-serving decision rather than one based on how you'd like to raise your kids
