I think half-day kindergarten is complete and utter BS. All the parents in our area whining about how it's too long a day for their kids need to realize their children will be in school a full day the next year anyway and get over it.
The job title "life coach" is used way too liberally. Unless you actually got specific training and have a designed plan for working with your clients to help them achieve a goal, you're just dispensing advice.
People need to start thinking before they open their mouths. If not, they are fair game to be ridiculed. Brought to you by the lady who asked me if my boys were twins - which happens often, no big deal. But when I told her no, they are not, she followed up with 'are you sure?'.
Well...what do you say to that? Am I sure if I had my babies one at a time or a year apart? Yeah, I am sure. My chosen answer that day was 'nah, you are right. I am not sure and will ask when I get home.' And walked away.

Our division does half-day kindergarten and it's amazing how many parents want full day but they won't do it. I guess they surveyed the parents and it was slightly more than 50% that still wanted half-day. It's one of those things I think that has been done a certain way around here so why change it?

Bwahaha. When I was a kid, adults would often screw up my unusual first name and ask if it was short for another, more common name. When I would say no, they'd use that exact "are you sure?" line. People are imbeciles.

Half day Kindergarten made sense when we were in kindergarten and the standards were what is expected of preschool now. Now, with the common core and the curriculum being what we did I. First grade, it's not realistic to teach it all in a half day. I can NOT imagine teaching all of that in a half day. Impossible.
I would, however, love the first half of the year to be half day and the second half if the year full day. I know the logistics would be too much, but I think it makes a lot of sense!
I don't really understand the point of half day kindergarten. Is it because the curriculum is more structured than a daycare might be? I mean, my kid is gone from 7-5 now, and likely will be on the same schedule until kindergarten. Why would she suddenly need to switch to 8-12?

I started kindergarten 23 years ago and I went full day. It has nothing to do with common core.
I didn't mean to imply it's because of common core. I also did full day. I am saying that the curriculum is much different than when we were in K. K students are doing what we did in 1st grade. I can't imagine teaching all of the K curriculum in a half day. But I think a half day is much less intense than a full day. Daycare full days involve a lot of learning by play and rest time and outside time. A full day of K is really curriculum intense. It's exhausting for 5 and 6 year olds. They get used to it and turn out fine, but I think a few months of half days would be beneficial.

Our kindergartens still do plenty of rest and play time - the full day ones and the half day ones. That's why I don't really understand the point of the half day. If it's because the curriculum is exhausting, then spread it out and let the rest of the day be less stressful.
I don't think super long, one length hair looks good on anyone.

She wouldn't. Around here, the parents who are against it have their kids at home with them, not in daycare, from birth to 5.
ETA: Not to mention, our kindergarten is 9-11:45. WTF can you do in that time frame?

I'm guessing it's naptime and/or parents that have kids at home today. It's probably a really big adjustment for kids that are used to being home to being gone a full day.
Also - many of the kids in 1/2 day 4K nap in the afternoon, so going to full-day kindergarten is probably a pretty big adjustment.
That said - I think kindergarten is the right transition time to get kids used to being at school all day...otherwise first grade is a pretty big adjustment!
ETA: I used the word adjustment waay too many times in that reply. I'm going to go drink my coffee now...

I was going to say the same thing. I have a friend who stays at home and preferred half day, because it would also be an adjustment for her to be away from her child that long.
People can spend their money on whatever they want. But don't complain you're broke then flash around your designer goods. I don't feel sorry for people like that at all.
I don't mind full day K. I just wish the curriculum was less intense. I think there should be more emphasis on making learning fun, learning by play and working on social skills. When I taught K,it was frowned upon to do too much "play" time. It was sad. But every district, every teacher, is different. As long as my kid enjoys going to school and is learning, I'll be happy.
I remember with the DOD schools made the switch to full-day kindergarten and everyone was like "OMG THINK OF THE CHILDREN" and they were like... we are?
I was coming in here to say that I think annuals are a waste of money, but @dimples12 beat me to it. :-) The only non-perennial plants I buy are herbs and vegetables, and I'm not even bothering with those this year because we joined a CSA & my deck will probably never be finished.
Also, @melody921, I really want to know what your weird first name is. You've referenced it a couple times and how people screw it up, so I'm imagining it to be something like Princess Consuela Banana Hammock.
I think where I grew up had the perfect solution to Kindergarten. K4 was half days for 4-5 year olds; the teachers got to figure out where all the kids were and had some time to get them to where they needed to be and if necessary, start the process of getting extra services; the kids learned the school rules and social expectations without it being quite as intense.
Then K5 was full day for 5-6 year olds and more academically intense.

This kindergarten talk is so foreign to me. LO will obviously go to Kindergarten and to Pre-K, but I never went to Kindergarten or Pre-K. I might be totally dating myself, but when I was Kindergarten age, it wasn't mandatory and the town we lived in only offered half days and a lot of kids my age didn't go.

If a restaurant is going to have a kids menu, they should make some effort to be kid-friendly. If I take my kid to an adult-oriented place, I don't expect them to have cups with lids or changing areas in the bathroom, but if you offer a kids menu and tell me kids are welcome over the phone, I feel like you should have the kinds of things that kids need. Especially fast food places. We stopped at a Wendy's and Subway when we were on the road this weekend and neither had a changing table. WTF?
If you want to buy something off of CL, you need to be willing to pick it up. I shouldn't have to drive all over creation to sell you a breast pump at a discounted rate.
Preschool/4k is pretty much a prerequisite for K now.
With all the skills and information a child needs to know before K so they can learn all the requirements in K I think kids who do not attend preschool/4k are at a disadvantage. (Not all of them, because I am sure there are some very dedicated and knowledgeable parents who prepare them for K)
Schools should just make Pre-K part of their system.
Here's my problem: We are middle class. Lower end. That being said we do not qualify for any assitance. Around these parts "lower" income qualifies for Pre K to be free. So those children are not at a disadvantage. Obvoiusly upper income can afford to pay for Pre K so those children go. We are stuck in the middle not qualifying and not really being able to afford it. We will have to find a way to afford it so my child doesn't get left behind. I do think Pre K is a good head start and I would hate to think he was behind before he got started. Stick it to the middle class again!
My Mom's boss is giving her and 3 other employees 1 week paid wherever his luxury timeshare has places. This year my Mom is going to Cabo and then in 3 years when her turn comes up again, we're going to go to Disney with the kids and stay at Animal Kingdom Villas. I looked at them yesterday. Holy crap. The giraffes look like they're right by your balcony! I can't even tell you how excited I am to go. I went to Disney the first time when I was around 3 1/2, and have been to Florida I believe 6 or 7 times throughout my life and have never been to Animal Kingdom or Sea World. I can't even wait to see what kind of cool stuff will be there in 3 more years!

Kindergarten is not required in Michigan. Everyone still goes. By law, kids have to be in school by age 7 I believe. Crazy!
Edited for age. Oops.

This is where we are at. Which is why I think the school districts should just incorporate Pre-K into the school, instead of parents paying for it OOP to an outside program. Most likely taxes would be increased to make this happen.
We are so lucky that they do this in our area. Full day (9-2:30) Pre-K for 3 and 4-year-olds is free, we just have to pay for wraparound care. Plus our taxes are subsidized- win!
I plant annuals every year. I love going to the green house browsing and buying them. I hate planting them but what can you do? They add so much character to our house. We always get so many compliments on them in the summer from people walking by.
I don't know enough about our preschool/K program yet to comment on what goes on here. I do know that DS will be 6 at the beginning of the year when he goes because the cutoff will be September 1.
I've come to the conclusion that some people's kids are weird. Maybe it's me, maybe it's them, IDK. Everytime we go to the park there's always some kid just dying for my attention when their parent is right there. IDK if they don't get enough, just looking for someone new or what but it gets annoying and I hope DS isn't like that.
Also if you are going to yell your child's name 100x at the park and they don't listen/answer for God sake try a new approach! They aren't listening. Get off your ass and parent. Not from the bench.

Here PreK is for young 5 year olds and is in the public school. Anyone can go. Mainly it's for the students who have birthdays in August, September and October. But since our age cutoff is being changed to September 1, pre-k is most likely going to be cancelled.

If it's doable, staying on site at disney is totally worth it and necessary. The convince factor is huge. Plus, Mickey waffles for brekfast every day.
I couldn't find a 2+ room on Disney property for a reasonable price. So off property we will be. BUT, for us, we are going to see my brother first, and 'do disney' second. And the hotel we stay at is right next to his apartment complex, so it is a win for us.
