August 2014 Moms

How is your nursery coming along?

I know we've talked a lot about nurseries so far, but I am wondering where everyone is with decorating and furnishing their nursery. I feel like I have things under control, but my mom thinks I'm running behind!

We actually bought furniture a while ago because there was a really good deal on the floor model that we couldn't pass up. After we found out we're having a boy, we finalized a theme...nautical...and I chose bedding (Pottery Barn). I've ordered the quilt because it was 1/2 off, but my parents are going to be gifting us the rest of the bedding and a really cute sailboat mobile at my shower in June. This past weekend I started looking at paint options, but that's still TBD.

The main things I have left on my to-do list are:

- Paint

- Put the crib together & clean out the current furniture...we've made room for the dresser, but we have to get rid of the bed in the nursery. We're giving it to my ILs because the current mattress in their guest room is horrible!

- Clean out the closet...it's currently full of my off-season clothes.

- Accessorize...I've been looking at lots of ideas for a few nautical accessories to add to the room, just need to make some decisions.

- Buy a rocker/glider

Where are you with your nursery? When do you plan to have everything completed?

Re: How is your nursery coming along?

  • The crib has been reassembled and we ordered a new mattress.  The toy organization is maybe halfway under control (#2's room was Finn's playroom that he rarely played in because he prefers to spread his toys all over the house).  I've cleaned out the dresser in the nursery too.

We are ordering a new window for the nursery this week, so I'm guessing it will be in roughly 2 weeks from now and we'll go ahead and put it in.  All the windows in our house are slowly being replaced and we'll do the nursery window and master bathroom window next.

I need to start looking for a rug and don't know where to begin.  I want something in between Target and PBK.  Maybe I should check out Home Goods?

  • Our nursery for two is sort of in each section of the house...it's a bi-level with our bedroom in the downstairs portion---not exactly convenient for twin infants.

They do have a nursery set up upstairs...painted, some decals up, cribs up, blankets made, mobile made...I'm waiting for the rest of the decals.  I think that should all be in today, so I'm hoping to finish a lot of things tonight.

The spare bedroom is going to be the room that holds their toys and bigger things like swings, bouncers, etc.

The first several months, they will sleep downstairs in their twin pack-n-play that we picked up this weekend.  We'll also have their RnPs down there too.  We need to get rockers for this area.  We won't be decorating down there, since it's just that in-between zone.  When they move to their cribs, we'll start sleeping upstairs in the master bedroom that's also set up.

We're all over, but we do have a lot done so far.  I think that's because I'm freaking out about how early I can actually have them or be put on bed rest.

  • We don't have our stuff even fully moved out of the nursery-to-be yet.  I was just having a lovely conversation about color schemes that proved that we are not on the same page at all.  Ugh.  He wants "bright" colors, and I want pretty, soft colors.  No furniture has been purchased, and you are WAY ahead of me.  We'll see how this goes…

  • The room that will be the nursery currently has a weight bench in it along with the cat's chair (she likes to shred it to pieces, and I'd rather her shred that chair than my nice new couch), and a litter box.  The closet is also full of hunting stuff.  We have a lot of work to do and haven't even purchased anything.  I think you're doing fine on timing!

  • It's been painted and everything is out of the room. We are having new carpet installed in a few weeks so we've been holding off on bringing any furniture in. I'm hoping my parents will buy the crib for us - we have a dresser that needs to be painted and a rocking chair that needs to get recovered. Those are hanging out in the basement for the next few months. We also bought just the wire closet organizer rack that needs to be hung up.

    So ya, it's been painted.

  • It's still DS#2's bedroom.  We're moving him at the end of May, so he'll have a good 2 months in his new bedroom (with DS#1) before baby comes.

We have the old crib stored away, just have to assemble it (we'll probably make the one in storage a toddler bed for DS and new baby will just get the current crib DS is using now).

Then, just have to move DS#2's clothes, get the baby clothes out of boxes and into drawers/closet, and done.  We've already been keeping a lot of DS#2's things, like toys, in DS#1's room so we won't have to move too much.

  • The nursery was our guest room and the new guest room was our junk room.  We went through the junk room & got rid of a ton of stuff, still working on selling some of the furniture in there.  We moved the bed from the nursery into the new guest room.  The nursery/closet has been cleaned out of everything but baby stuff, the dresser that we will be re-using as a dresser/changing table, and a twin bed.  Everything is piled in the middle of the room for painting.

I have finished all of my paint prep, taking down everything including the blinds, filling holes, sanding, & washing the walls.  We have our paint picked out, but I'm waiting til I know we will have a few warm days in a row for me to be able to paint with the windows open before I actually buy the paint.  We bought our overhead fan/light fixture last weekend & H will install that as soon as the middle of the room isn't a mess.

Still to do...buy/get the crib, buy shelving system/cloth drawers at Ikea, have our glider come in (it was ordered a few weeks ago), buy all accessories (decals, curtains, wall stuff, mattress, bedding, etc).  We find out the sex of the baby on Friday so the fun shopping will begin soon!

  • We are in limbo, waiting to here on the status of the rental house but I have looked into themes and furniture. No matter what we won't b painting since we will b renting so the wall/window accessorize will b colorfully and we are keeping it simple and decluttered since I know we will end up accumulating stuff as he grows. I am sooo excited to get things started and nest, folding and re folding all his little clothes ;)

  • Completed:
    - Dresser
    - Rocking chair
    - Painting
    - Carpet

    Finishing Up This Week:
    - Pick-up crib from BRU
    - Assemble crib

    On Back-Order:
    - Bookshelf (will need to be assembled when it gets here)

    To Do:
    - CLEAN! - We still have so many of our things in the room, my wedding dress is in the closet, a 32 inch TV and stand, and lots of other random items.
    - Lighting - There are no overhead lights in the room so we definitely need to purchase some lamps
    - Decorate - We haven't decided what we are going to put on the walls just yet

  • Before we even new we were pregnant with number 3 we were in the middle of converting our third garage into a play room. But then that got nixed since 3 is on the way. Our original plan was to move dd into our room, move ds1 into her room and put baby in the smallest room. But since we found that number 3 is a boy both boys will move into the big room and make the small room a toy/play room.

Ds1 had a vintage car theme and this baby I was gonna do mustaches but now I think it would be weird. Ds1 will get the toddler bed from parents house and ds2 will get his crib.

But here is what I've started:

    started refinishing the glider.

Oooh, I want to see your nautical theme! We are doing pretty well. We bought a rug and put it down - the walls are painted and my husband painted the tree we want on the wall. My best friend is coming over in the next few weeks to paint the cherry blossoms on the tree and a few other little accents. My MIL ordered the crib and it should be arriving in the next few days, then we pick a mattress. My husband re-purposed a dresser that his grandfather made, it will also be serving as our changing table. That's all the good stuff.

The not-so-good stuff...this room used to be my office. I have moved into a much smaller space now and I have SO.MUCH.STUFF that needs to find a place, but I am having a tough time. I have two full paper grocery bags of stuff to shred. And just tons of stuff I am too sentimental to let go of, but don't have storage room for. The closet is empty, though - that's what I accomplished this weekend. It's ready to hang up all the adorable clothes we've received already and start getting set up for baby! I think I'll be done in there by the end of this week.

  • Nursery?  What nursery?  Oh - you mean the room at our new house that we haven't even moved into yet because we are waiting on construction that involves tearing out one wall of the two bedrooms and replacing a spiral stair case with a normal one.  Nope - nothing done.

Can you tell I'm a tad irritated?

  • OP it sounds like you are right on track!

For us, we're just re-using our existing nursery that DS vacated last July so there's not much to do. I took down DS's name that was on the wall, and I already brought up a lot of the baby clothes and gear since I wanted to evaluate how much new stuff we'll need and what clothes can be re-used for a girl. The only things left are:
    • Re-assemble the crib
    • Put the camera up for the monitor (it's just sitting in the closet right now)
    • Add some girly touches via accessories and put up baby girl's name

I have exactly one thing for this baby- an outfit to have her baby pictures taken in. Nothing else. I've got lots of time and right now I'm just not motivated to even start.

  • I bought a rug, ordered the rocker last week (takes 8-12 weeks to come in) and my mom is ordering the crib tomorrow as our gift. I got some paint samples to try, I just have to put them on the wall. We won't do anything with the room until June because I need the extra rooms for guests in the beginning of June for a graduation party we're throwing. Then we'll get into full nursery mode.

So far, we've painted and moved the furniture that was in the nursery to the guestroom. The new guestroom is still kinda sorta an office...DH is finishing a new office in the basement that should (hopefully) be done this summer.

We painted the nursery what I thought was going to be gray, but turned out a bluish-lavender ish-gray. Still pretty. We also got the crib last weekend and got it up. I'm doing a bird theme, mainly in gray and yellow with some hot pink thrown in. I've also been Etsy browsing like a fiend for wall art. And, fwiw, my mom thinks we haven't done enough either, OP.

  • @FrodaBaggins...Here is the PB bedding that we'll be using (top and bottom left) along with the madras crab quilt I just got 1/2 off! I'm also planning to get rope letters for his name, the sailboat mobile and the rope curtain rod from PB. Then, I'm just planning to add in a few more nautical touches...probably a picture and a few accessories.

You'll have to share a photo of your cherry blossom tree when it's finished...that sounds great!

We have emptied the room but have yet to paint or get any furniture. I know we gave plenty of time so Im not too worried. Guess Im not in a hurry to spend a bunch of money yet. We also have our house in the market so Im back and forth about painting the room yet.

We are also doing a nautical whale theme!

  • This post makes me really excited b/c that is all I worked on over my spring break last week!

These are the items we've done:

    - MH painted the room
    - Emptied all office furniture and combined it into our room
-Cleared MH's clothes from the closet
    -Got carpet
-Bough a chevron (grey and white) hamper
    -Has the dresser set up

    To do:

    - Move the bed to storage
-Purchase a crib, bookshelf, and rocker
    - Add accent colors of pink or blue once baby is born.

  • DD will be moving into the old playroom for my two DS's so I've had my work cut out for me getting all of that crap out of 'her room'!

    Done:
    - bought paint yesterday
    - picked out all of my decor, currently creating DIY versions of all of them. I'm cheap :)
-finished getting all of the freaking toys out of there this morning

    To do:
    - buy bedding
    - clean out the closet
    - put the crib from DS2 together
    - buy more fabric bins for diaper storage
    - convince H I need a new rocker/glider. Mine sucks and is uncomfortable!

Right now my biggest concern is getting the walls painted. My H is NOT a painter and I'm pretty much going to be doing the entire project alone. No biggie but I'd like to get it over with since I feel like I'm getting bigger by the minute. I figure everything else will come in its own time. She won't even sleep in there the first few months so I'm not stressed as long as I have a space to change diapers and store clothes.

  • I haven't started anything nursery related. We need to finish remodeling the basement and gut the kitchen/ main floor before we can move to the third floor (where the bedrooms are). To get the nursery set up, we need to demolish part of a wall, build another wall, re-do wiring, insulate, hang drywall, replace carpet, and paint. I expect we'll get to this some time in baby's first year, which is fine by me! Baby will be hanging out in our room for the first few months anyhow.

  • We've done nothing. We have to move out of the baby's room (currently living in it). The master bedroom was supposed to be a project years ago but along the way it turned into a walk in closet, junk/storage, gift wrapping room and we never got to it. Now we have to do it and it's going to be a project. We're going to drywall, new windows and hubs is going to build a better closet with bifold doors. Then the nursery will need new carpet and painted. Then we can start getting crap to put in it.

We still have plenty of time....right? :D

  • The room is still guest bedroom #2. We haven't moved anything but may start in the next few weeks. We only just got the crib - the ILs gave us money for our nursery and I picked it up on Monday. Next I am researching rockers and chairs. It is my understanding that it might take a while for one to come in. We already have a desk that we will use as a changing table and a bookshelf with drawers for storage in the room, so those stay.

We still need to sell the house and buy another one. Thankfully we got an offer in yesterday, we just hope they accept our counter of a 45 vs. 25 day escrow. 25 days is just insane right now and while I love my ILs...I do not want to spend more time with them then I have to.
