Re: **3/18 AW/SS/Randomness Thread**

  • Long, random story:  Evidently our neighbors were hoarders.  They also rented the property they lived in for the last 8 months.  They were evicted for not paying and left TONS of random stuff in the house.  The owner's moved all of it into the front yard in hopes that people will take it.  I'm super excited because I found a solid wood rocking horse that I can refinish for the baby's nursery.  YAY!

Also, I really miss alcohol.  I can't wait until I can have a beer.  Or a margarita.

And I still can't decide if it would be cheaper to cloth diaper or use disposables until baby fits in the OS we've bought.  Sigh.  I need someone to decide for me. Please?

@wareagle1220 - that's awesome! Also, I owe you a pm, LB! And I also cannot wait for a drink.

I failed the one hour GD test. I'm really bummed. They wanted 129 or lower and I got a 134. Yay for the 3 hour :/
@ohyealovely‌ That was my exact number with DD and I passed the 3 hour by a huge margin. Even after the 1hr results came back, the nurse flat out told me she thought there was no way I would fail the 3 hour after a 134 on the one hour (with no other signs of GD). Hope this is the case for you! I take my 1 hr tomorrow. Blah.

I failed the one hour with 144 and passed the three hour. But it seriously sucked. So much nausea and a headache.

  • @wareagle1220‌ we did prefolds and covers during the newborn stage. I think you could get away with 24 prefolds, 2 snappis, and 3-4 covers (we used thirsties from amazon). I bought my prefolds from green mountain diapers, cloth-eez brand. Looks like that would be a little over $100 altogether. Green mountain has a lot of great info: https://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/prefolds.html

I thought DH would have problems with the prefolds but we both were pros after a few days.

  • Disclaimer: Not an expert, just a researcher and a CD lurker :P

@wareagle1220 we're doing NB CDs! We have a few AIOs but we're primarily doing covers and prefolds (with a few flats just because I like variety in life lol). The covers are mostly Bummis and Thirsties, and I'm also adding some Thirsties Duos which I have yet to buy because those will be new and I can't commit to patterns.

All in all this is what we'll have for the NB phase:
    6 covers (bummis and thirsties)
    4 pockets (kawaii P&N)
2 AIOs (lil joey and another kawaii)
4 covers yet to buy (thirsties duos)

We have 22 NB GMDs right now but I want to have at least 60 and then a dozen flats.

It sounds like a lot but 1) we're having twins so you would just half this amount and 2) the NB PFs and flats you can use to stuff pockets or as doublers later on. Most everything was bought used so it wasn't that bad!

  • There is also a GMD b/s/t page on Facebook where I got an amazing deal on nb GMD workhorses for anyone interested. There's also 3-4 newborn cd specific b/s/t pages on there that I have found! There was an amazing deal posted the other day that was a combination of fitteds, aio's, prefolds, covers to equal 30 changes for $120! Basically you can find super awesome deals :)
  • @KrystaJ‌ DH and I were the exact same way in our birthing class and it sounds like they used the same materials. If so, get ready for some awesome 70s birth videos - there was a lot of hair ;) We ended up being the teacher's favorites because we were the only ones who would answer her questions/talk at all.

I'm annoyed with DH right now - DD is potty training and almost there (wears underwear for naps, pull ups for nighttime and has only had a handful of accidents after the first couple days). Well I still remind her to go regularly and even if she says she doesn't have to I'll have her try anyway and she usually goes at least a little bit. Tonight I asked her if she has to go, she says no, but I ask her to try anyway then DH chimes in and says something like 'she knows when she has to go' so I let go. Of course not too much later she has an accident which is NBD, I'm just frustrated that I didn't follow through knowing she hadn't gone for almost 2 hours.

  • KrystaJ Ok so this may be my redneck coming out in me but you can go pee in a bucket from a home improvement store and put paper in a bag. After a couple of uses pour it either outside or down the bath drain followed by some bleach. You can find them with lids on them and if your working on the bathroom floor you will have a saw, cut a hole in the lid and it will be easier to sit on. As far a pooing I would just head to the closest Target. (I find they usually have big bathrooms) If all else fails and you can not hold your poo just go in the bucket and bag the whole thing and trash it.

@wtfisup‌ - my doctor told me I could eat smoked salmon! I thought it was really weird when my pregnant friend was eating it but she said her doctor gave her the OK and another doctor she worked with ate it while pregnant. I just figured I wouldn't chance it but REALLY wanted it one day so checked with my doctor and she said it was fine. It was glorious!

My FIL makes the best smoked salmon ever and there was no way you were going to keep me off that stuff. Crackers, smoked salmon, cream cheese and pepper jelly. It was so delicious.

Yummmm. Now I want a lox bagel with all the fixings for breakfast.
  •  @katekat8721 @MNOPea, what size prefolds would I get? Newborn? Small?  Some of each?

With prefolds you could get either. Small will last you longer it will just be a fluffier bum while baby is really little, but they will still work :)

  • I'm actually hungry this morning & it's food day at work! What good timing for me to be making the turn for the better. Plus, I think the birds around here know it's the first day of spring and are all out singing. After feeling so terrible lately, I'm counting every small thing as a blessing. (I usually do anyway but I still have a level of snark that coexists but I'll take a break from that for now)

I'm irrationally excited to see how our cat reacts to the baby.  I think she's going to get all the cuddles because our cat loves to lay/rub on anything that's on the floor.
  • I just spent the last hour requesting various types of access for the team that will be covering a large part of my work when I go out on leave.  It's starting to feel real, and I can't wait!!!
  • So last night I was talking with my best friend about our meeting with the midwife center tonight (I'm so pumped!).... Anyway, I mentioned that if all goes well during L&D they can send you home between 6hrs-24hrs pp. She immediately got pissed and said "I don't agree with that. You're stupid if you switch, you need to be in the hospital because so much can go wrong." Now, mind you, she was extremely patronizing when I told her I wanted to try unmedicated birth. (Her response, "yeah honey that's what ALL first time mothers say. Whatever"). I had to keep my tongue bit in order to not snap at her, but I wanted your opinions. Is same day discharge to home too sudden? I have a feeling it's not just because people have babies at home no problem, but any opinions? Also, please note, I'm aware that interventions could be necessary, but if they aren't....

As with most things, it depends on the individual.  But my good friend gave birth to her second in January, and she was out of the hospital within 24 hours.  If everything looks good with mother and baby, I don't think there should be any reason to stay.  That said, I might feel more comfortable having some extra time and assistance with my first.  If it's important to you, it's definitely worth a shot!

I just hate doctors offices, hospitals, taking medicines, and all that's involved. I feel like if it's not medically necessary to be there, why would I stay longer than needed. Especially because the birth center is a mile away and the hospital is a 10 min car ride.

Definitely an individual choice. My best friend also left after 24 hours, which is the minimum stay. For me, I want to stay the full two days. This is going to be a learner experience, and I don't want family visiting once we get home. I'd rather stay there a couple of days where nurses can help take care of me and H and I can just focus on baby with a support system around us. I mean, once you go home, you're there for good. In the hospital, no laundry, no dishes, nada. Just us relaxing and learning.

  • When are you not supposed to travel far?  I forgot to ask at my last appointment and need to figure out when we are going to visit DH's family in MS (10 hrs away).
My MW said 34 weeks was when we needed to stay local. The risk of long travel isn't just baby coming, but long car rides and such increase risk of blood clots in late term.

Well I think the whole thing with the Ys were all making fun of her first kids name so it wasnt just the one person. While I agree with the rule usually, sometimes people REALLY need a reality check before making the same mistake again.

I see your point. I think I was surprised to see it actually said.

Mine will be little for longer, so I did mostly newborns. If you check the GMD website though you can see the prefolds on actual babies and how well they fit at certain weights. That site is awesome!

Did you use snappis? Or just lay the prefold in the cover?  Sorry for all the questions.  I'm going to price everything out.
It looks like you could do either! You can fold them up and snappi them, or just trifold them and lay them in the cover. I'm getting snappis so I can see which way I like later (they're like $10 for 3 on Amazon)

  • I totally admire all you who are doing cloth diapering. In theory, I love it. In practice, I know it won't work for us. Of the things we struggle to manage in our house, laundry is #1. We're never caught up as it is, and it's a source of stress with just the two of us. It's the one chore I've considered paying someone to come help us with. The thought of making baby food? No big! We cook daily and can steam and blend some veggies no problem. Growing a garden? Sure! But adding anything to our laundry that we don't have to beyond the baby clothes would BREAK. MY. SOUL.

Note: I may not be great at this aspect of adulthood.

  • @jshrop, my mother was home within 12 hours with all four of her kids, because that's how they did it back then in England.  She survived.  I tried to go home after the first night there with C, and because she was jaundiced they wouldn't discharge her, and I wasn't leaving if she wasn't.  I hate it, I would have been so much more comfortable in my own home.  I'll push for it again this time, and hopefully Charlie won't be as yellow as his big sister was!

Also, apparently once you give notice, you are no longer considered "an employee in good standing" at my current job.  Even if you gave three months notice specifically so you could train your replacement because your job sucks and needs that much time.  Being not in good standing means technically I'm not eligible for bonuses...which they are giving out for the first time since I started working here.  Someone fought long and hard for me and I'm getting a portion of what I should be getting.  Works for me, even though it sucks.  I'm torn.

That really sucks and I'm not sure they can legally use your future leave as a reason to not give you a bonus. From my experience bonuses are usually for the prior years work. I just took my company's discrimination training so I know it is at least against their policies.
