Re: U TO THE IZZ-O

  • J13 never disappoints in the uo! Gun control, slavery, technology.... Such great minds on this board. I'm a little surprised assisted suicide didn't get more attention though. I have no more uos. I need food first. ;)

  • I wish it was the olden days where there was no technology.  I think that kids (and people in general) are too reliant on technology.  (Not sure if this is a UO).
This reads like a sweeping generalization and maybe you don't mean it that way, but technology is what kept Giles and I alive during birth. So I'm pretty happy it's around. As a historian, I can't say the "olden days" were so great. People died of really, really preventable shit. Technology now keeps them alive. Technology also does things like...alert towns that tornadoes are coming.

It was a big generalization.  What I mean more specifically is computers, television, internet, Iphones, etc.  I think it takes away from quality family time (again making a generalization, I should stop that!!).  I am guilty of using it way more then I should.  I also think social media has gone a little nuts.  Is T.witter really necessary?  I just took a poop.  I just fed the birds.  I just changed babies diaper.  Maybe I'm just T.witter ignorant??

So...nothing to do with anything else. I know we can't choose who has kids or not and we never would, right??? But can we PLEASE make an exception for teen mom Jenelle??? Just this once???? I want to throat punch her. She's waiting to see if she's going to jail and has been with this WONDERFUL guy two whole months. Anyone with me???? Gahhhhhhh. 8-|

YES! with you. She should work on getting some sort of custody arrangement set with her mom for Jace before she considers having another. Does she even know what kind of responsibility having a baby requires? I mean her mom has raised her first.

  • I think it's tacky to only wear a sports bra as your workout top. I get wanting to show off your awesome bod if you have one, I'm just not a fan.

Are you against bikinis too? I just fail to see the difference. I hate wearing a bunch of extra clothes when I work out. It's not about showing off, it's about I need to run a fifteen minute two mile. I want less things holding me back. Kwim?

  • I get why people do it, I just think it looks tacky. I'm certainly not saying people shouldn't do it. Do what feels comfy! Wearing a bra as a shirt is not comfy to me. All or nothing over here Lol And I don't wear bikinis ever unless I'm trying to tan but I'm not against those either.

Idk. I guess I feel a form-fitting workout tank isn't holding people back...at least, it doesn't hold me back. I don't understand how people can wear regular shirts when they work out so apparently I'm just picky. But regular shirts feel like a thousand pounds when I'm exhausted and get all bunched up which is why I can't do them.

BTW Noah is squealing and excited because of your siggy @jackson290721

@nkaeding sunscreen post made me think of one.

Sunscreen is an awesome invention that should be used, but I think the recommendations have gone overboard. Some sun is a good thing! At DS's old daycare they put it on kids to play outside at 10 am. I asked them to leave it off. Vitamin D, it's important.

You must not have fair skin.  I have very fair skin, I have been sitting under a very dense tree and gotten sunburnt so bad that my blisters got blisters, it was awful.

My kids have very fair skin and we wear sunscreen whether the sun is blazing or not, 10 am - 4 pm.

    Skin cancer is no joke.
Yeah I have to say I completely disagree with the idea that sunscreen should be left off. You can still get a tan while wearing sunscreen and you'll be blocking the majority of UVA rays that cause skin cancer in the first place.

It's also good to note that people of all skin tones are susceptible to skin cancers.. Though some of us fair folks are more likely to get the painful burns. Just because you don't burn does not mean that the suns rays aren't damaging your skin!

ETA: not that I think going a day w/o is the end of the world. I rarely wear it but I've been trying because I produce sun spots and freckles etc.

Also, do we not produce vitamin D while wearing sunscreen? That's a real question, btw. Physiology was a long time ago and I can't remember exactly how that works..

Jackson, very briefly will I state my opinion. I fully support the 2nd amendment to own a gun. I believe that education and training should be mandated before owning a gun. I believe background checks should be necessary and I think that if you have certain mental illnesses you should be looked at closely before being allowed to own a gun. With that said, I don't own a gun and probably never will. They scare me. The reason they scare me is because I'm completely uneducated about the use of them. I've never shot a handgun. I don't have plans to do so. I have gone shooting with a shotgun and enjoyed it. Clay pigeons are fun. I shot a rifle as well and didn't enjoy that. People are going to have guns regardless of the laws.

    Thank you for sharing!

I'll jump in on assisted suicide. In concept it is a good idea, but there is so much gray area. How do you quantify a person's mental capacity to choose euthanasia? Attempting suicide by yourself is illegal, does having an illness make assisted suicide more noble? What quantifies "Terminal illness"? For example, ALS is terminal, but has a broad range of life expectancy. At what point during an illness does suicide become acceptable? A doctor is instructed to "do no harm" per the Hippocratic oath. How do you put value on life? Is a remainder of a life filled with suffering of more or less value than no life at all? I understand the thought process behind assisted suicide. I've comforted and cared for patients and family's as they took there last breaths. I've watched people full of life and vitality be overcome by illness and turn into shells. It seems so humane to help end someone's suffering but there are too many contributing factor, ambiguity and altering circumstances that make it not a cut and dry argument.
I agree that it is a very gray area.  I just know that if I had stage 4 bone cancer and was in horrific pain that pain meds wouldn't touch that I wouldn't want to live.  If I had ALS and could do nothing for myself and my brain was failing too, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to live.  What's the point?  Both DH and I have told each other that if one of us is brain dead, pull the plug.

  • As for the gun thing.. I'm very pro regulating who can buy a gun and I think all gun sales, trades, etc should be required to be submitted to the state for approval etc etc..

I think I would be more comfortable with a holster should I ever decided to get CCW mainly because I think it would be more easily accessible for me and less accessible for purse snatchers.

I would definitely want to know if another child's parents had a gun before letting LO go over to play, and I would probably take extra steps in the whole "getting to know you" process with those parents to get a feel for how they treat their weapons.

Perhaps it's because I was raised in a very pro-gun area but I'm amazed that some people are so shocked about people carrying a gun on them. I am guessing that at least half of the people who live here have at least one gun in their home an I bet many of them have CCW as well.

Whether or not it's said explicitly, it's a little annoying that the generalization is that people who carry a gun in their purse are irresponsible parents putting their kids' lives in danger.. So I understand why a responsible gun owner might feel defensive.

  • Back ground checks reminded me of an issue with when I started working at the day care. So they ran a back ground check on me, and finger printed me when I started working there. My back ground check had to pass before I could be alone with kids. It took forever for my back ground check to pass. So long that people started talking, thinking I had some shady past. Turns out it took forever because my prints were already in the system. Because of the Army!!!! They couldn't figure out why I was printed and figured it was because I went to jail or some shit.
This is pretty much my entire life. I run background checks and process fingerprint cards. Today I have three people I have to fingerprint. I would never assume you had a shady background because you had been printed in the past. That's pretty ridiculous. Then again in my industry everyone is mandated to be printed so more often than not you are printed several times throughout your career.

Oh, it was the other day care workers assuming I was shady. Not the higher ups processing the papers and what not. Most peoples were cleared in a day or two, mine took longer to sort. So the women started talking.

I just got an email about getting finger printed at 2:30pm today for my new project. Fun.

And daycare was a worse rumor mill than high school :)  I have always wondered why we had to have the background checks, physicals, tb test, and sign up for the state Registry...but no drug test.  Yet when I went to work for a telco/isp/cable company I had to have one.
