I wish it was the olden days where there was no technology. I think that kids (and people in general) are too reliant on technology. (Not sure if this is a UO).
I think that all parents should attempt to return their teacher's phone call and at least confirm that they received the message, especially if the teacher says it is important.
This is more of a FFC and you can file it away in the "we barely care" category, but I'm irrationally sad that Russia is out of the hockey Olympics tournament and that the US and Canada are playing in the semis. I feel like the final will be such a let down and I'm waaaaay more upset about this than I should be.
The pt who did EI screening for Ben said that she saw a two year old who couldn't stack blocks. He could stack blocks on the iPad so she knew he understood what it meant to stack blocks, but he couldn't do much in 3d vs 2d. However, as with anything else, I think moderation is key to balance learning technology with also being able to play outside.
My SO doesn't have any military style guns but he does have way more than 4. I don't think the amount you own should matter unless you're doing something wrong or illegal with them.
I do think it's ridiculous when people have hundreds of guns and a ton of ammunition. It just isn't necessary.

I agree. DH has plenty of different guns for hunting. Different hunts call for different guns.
My UO is I have a love/hate relationship with UO. I always think I have an opinion about something, then I read someone else's and I think 'hmm I can understand that point too' and I then don't know what I think because I can totally see both sides making sense. This is why I have a hard time voting in any election...
I see the need for a gun to defend yourself. I see the need for a rifle for hunting. I don't understand why anyone would need more than 3, maybe 4 guns in the home if there are hunters.
The general public does not need access to military style weapons.
And it's still bothering me. Bats, knives and the like are the worst choice for defense unless you're Chuck Norris. In which case you would only need fists.
You obviously know nothing about hunting. If you hunt for more than one kind of game you generally need more than one type of gun. If you have more than one hunter in your home you need double the number of guns. Sometimes to hunt in certain areas you need a different kind of gun than you would normally use (shotgun vs rifle).
My UO is when people who know nothing about something feel they have an opinion on that something especially when voicing their opinions changes legislation. (Not necessarily about guns but in general).
I am a believer in gun rights. I do however think that they should do a serious background check. REALLY serious.
We have guns, they are safely put away out of reach for E and are used to protect out family if the case presents itself. I don't see the big deal when used properly.
I think there's more reason to fear safety from school shootings & gun accidents than intruders. Sandy hook. Columbine. VA Tech. Aurora.
That said, I'd rather have my sons grow up to love to hunt than sit around playing violent video games. Might even rather they become passionate hunters than play football.
Hunting engenders a love for the outdoors, patience, self-reliance. Football is no less violent and gives brain injuries.
And though I am enough of a historian not to pine for the good old days, I also have serious concerns about our lack of attention and interaction with the natural world.

This is one thing we do right here in Canada. The hoops you have to jump through to gey licensed are crazy. It takes time and money just to get a license. For handguns it is even stricter. If anyone calls the police with a concern that someone could harm themself or others with their guns the police can take the guns away.
Well I am now glad I wisely chose not to read yesterday's gun thread. Having lost two mentally unstable loved ones to suicide by gun I'm probably a little too emotional on the subject.

I do agree that kids are exposed to technology way too early. I have seen many shopping cart toddlers with ipads @fayga and it drives me nuts.
I think it's important that kids know how to use computers, iPads, etc from an early age. Kids should also play outdoors, of course, but being "exposed way too early" is good, IMO. I don't have older kids but I can imagine it being disadvantageous to be unfamiliar with these devices when starting school. DH wants DD to learn computer programming asap.
Never thought of it this way. We had an old computer that did nothing and no internet while was growing up. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to computers. I guessbit's all about finding the happy median

I guess you didn't read my other comments. I just said I don't understand why anyone would need more than a few guns, not that they shouldn't have them at all.
And I don't know much about hunting.
That's not what I was speaking about anyway - a relative of mine has a freaking crazy gun collection and never hunts. They live in an apartment in the city.
You didn't read my whole statement properly. I commented on needing more than 3 or 4 guns if you hunt. I personally don't understand why anyone would own any guns if you don't hunt or at least target shoot with them. Three hunters who hunt for deer, bear, upland game, waterfowl (field and water) and varmints would need 15-18 guns minimum. Just for hunting without having too many guns. That is my whole point responding to your comment about 3 or 4 guns in the house if you hunt.
I agree about military style weapons. They are unnecessary.
However if I ever get my hands on a cannon I will be the happiest girl in the world.
Many of my mom friends conceal & carry. The rule at playgrounds & groups is that if you are going to C&C then use a holster or set your bag completely out of infant reach.
There is also a safety on many guns. I do not C&C, & guns in the diaper bag/purse make me nervous. We solved it by open, clear communication with those exercising their rights.
So far no one has had an accident, but I know there has been a general expression of "can you use a holster?".
I am seriously laughing my ass off that people look down their noses at toddlers with iPhones in grocery stores.
Yes, please tell me what else I'm supposed to do with my three year to get him to not throw himself out of the cart, scream, run up and down the aisles, etc, because I'm sure I, as his mother, haven't tried everything else before I shoved a game in his face.
For those of you who haven't had a toddler yet, or better yet a three year old, I'm going to say it. Just you wait.
How about you not judge mothers when you don't know the whole story. You have no clue how god awful that mom's day has been already. You have no idea what she's going though.
As for that 8 year old, did you ask that frazzled mom if her son had an attention disorder? No? Then don't judge.
FFS.
Before DD I was one of those people that thought that small kids should not have things such as ipads. DD was not going to have one, BUT she is going to. Since she is going to have a hard time learning things and kids with Ds are generally visual learners this will help her so much. She will be able to communicate with us and learn things most kids just figure out. So don't be too quick to judge.

Or at 8 it is like the terrible 3's all over again with more sass. I am thankful for technology and will use it to my full advantage to avoid unneccesary stress and headaches.
NOOOO. Three just about broke me.
Does it get any better at 4? Corri is 4 in 2 weeks and still evil as hell...I fear the fourribles are upon us!
My mom had talked about getting a C&C and when she came to stay at our house to paint V's nursery she was bringing her luggage in and said she had one more thing and brought in a box and her dry cleaning and I offered to take the box and she said...no I've got it. That second I knew there was a gun in there. I told her...if there is a gun in there it will stay outside. It will not be in this house period...or she could find somewhere else to stay. I was more upset about her trying to hide the fact she had a gun in our home than the fact she had a gun. I somewhat doubt my moms emotional stability and don't think she should have a gun. I don't know the answers because people who want guns are gonna get them regardless of laws...same as drugs. That's why I don't really understand the gun control debate. You can't carry a concealed weapon in DC and how many people are shot in SE DC every day? At least 1.
I have been in some bad situations where I most definitely could have been shot back in my early stupid 20's. Obviously I don't put myself in those situations anymore...my parents don't even know that twice I was in a bar where people were shot and it was not a big bar...I could have been hit easily. I makes me cringe to think my son could ever be in a situation like that.
Georgia has released a new Conferderate flag license plate. Things were getting too boring around here in our General Assembly I guess, what with eviscerating public education funding and taking Skittles from poor people.
I'm just rolling my eyes at this because...why?
I have a problem with the confederate flag and what it represents to me. Though I don't really know what it means to others. To me it means solidarity among southern states to fight their right to own other humans. Does it still mean that? Is that connotation ever removed from that symbol?
I know toddlers are a handful, and I may eat my words in a few years, but as a kid I knew how I was expected to behave in a store or restaurant and I never had a iPad to keep me from running off. My sister and I were raised by our single father so we accompanied him on every errand, and I'm sure he was plenty frazzled. I'm not saying I would never do it or that I judge those who do, (because you never know what kind of day/week/month someone has had) but I think in some cases it is lazy parenting. These forms of entertainment are pretty new, and people found a way to make do in the past without them.
ETA: toddlers/kids with ADD/ADHD is a different story, obviously.

Because seriously - these sweet babies are going to be toddlers. And you will do things like give them an iPad so you can grocery shop. Truth.
Preach! Though DD does not like the IPad that way-- we do use it for games at the doctors office. Abby much prefers to help hold groceries or talk to other shoppers :P
