Baby Names

Help on name!

My husband and I are expecting our second little girl in 7 weeks. We cannot decide on a name. First off, we really like unique and different names - fair warning. :) Out first daughter is Fynlee Grace, she just turned 2. We had Fallyn (Fallon) Faith picked out for baby girl #2, but my husband never really loved the name. On Valentine's Day at dinner my husband, out of the blue, mentioned the name Livie, we would spell it Lyvee. I really like it, but I am completely stuck! I sent it to several people, with our spelling, and several said "How do you pronounce it?" Is it really that difficult? How else could Lyvee be pronounced? So what is your vote? Thanks so much for all of your opinions and help!

Lyvee Faith

No to both of these strange spellings.

I like Livie better than Fallon however I like Olivia with Livie as the nn. Olivia Faith or Livie Faith gets my vote.

    ETA:
You can like unique & different names without butchering the spelling. Fallyn is pronounced the exact same way as Fallon. Except you won't need to spell your child's name out for everyone you meet to explain to them why it's "unique" & cool.

Yes. It is that difficult. As a PP said, it looks like LieVee

  • In your opinion I am trying to be trendy and "cool", but in mine and my husband's we think they are unique and different.  I grew up with two different girls with the EXACT same name, first and last, one with same middle.  I hated it, I always wanted something different, even if just the spelling.  I am giving my daughters that.  If they dislike their first names they can always go by their simple and classic middle names.  I will not be upset.  I don't feel like there is a reason here to be rude, if you don't care for the name than say just that.  There is no need to bash, but thanks.

All of this. I would say Lye-vee. Please consider Olivia or Fallon. Or look at other less popular names that are actually spelled right.

I would judge the heck out of these names. There is definitely "good" unique and "bad" unique...

    Oh dear. QFP.
  • Livie is the spelling I've seen. I've only heard it as a nn for Olivia so I'd be prepared for lots of people asking if it's short for Olivia. But, it's cute.

Often there is more than one way to spell a name, yes. Have you seen Fallyn or Lyvee on any legit website or baby name book as a traditional & real spelling?

Lyvee was not found on Behindthename.com.

Belle is the French word for beautiful. It can be used as a name, such as the character in the Disney film. It is not the same as a bell.

Names are words. There are alternative, legit variations and then there are misspelled creations.

Livie could also be short for Olive which is unique in a good way. I'm sorry but Fallyn is not good. You're not being different or unique by changing the spelling. Sooooo many people stick a Y or a EE in names to the point of it being cliché. Those names will get thrown into the Brynlee, Baylee, Addyson, Maddicyn, etc trend of the 2000s. I see absolutely zero originality. Honestly, no snark here, but how would butchering the spelling of a name help her case if there is another in her class? She would still be Fallyn A and the other would be Fallon B. The Y does nothing except ensure her name will be misspelled on everything. If you want to be different pick a real name that is less common. Look for a real names in the 300+ on namenerds with all spellings combined. Not only will she have a unique and different name, but people wouldn't be side eyeing it. Finley (all spellings is 317) other names in that LESS common are

But if I saw Lyvee, I would pronounce it - Lie-vee. And then I would roll my eyes.

I agree with this. Unique is not the same as trendy and/or made up spellings. I would much prefer Fallon over Fallyn, even though I don't like Fallon much. Though, either spelling, I think it's too close to your DD's name.

I like Livy and Livie a lot, but more as a nickname. ...Even if it's just a nickname for Liv.

I would also pronounce Lyvee as Lie-Vee.

  • Legit websites for baby names?  Are there such?  I have seen Fallyn several times, but because it is not on behindthename.com, it couldn't possibly be a name.  And Lyvee, no I have not seen it.  But I do not base my name choices on whether or not I can find them on a website.

We chose the spelling of Lyvee to be similar to her big sister, with a y and double e.  I didn't consider the pronunciation of Lie Vee.  I appreciate everyone's opinion on that.  It was something I didn't consider. Now I do.

We chose Fallyn, to also include the y.  Something we wanted.

Just because you've seen someone else make up the spelling Fallyn doesn't make it a legit spelling.

  • You're right, apparently there are 75 other SS with that exact spelling in 2012 alone according to Namenerds. If you insist on doing this what about Callyn? Even if LO isn't a fan of it she can use Callie as a NN which is lovely.
  • I am one who can definitely take opinions and am open to them.  I am not one, however, who is going to just sit back and say thank you to someone I feel is being rude... or I'm sorry, truthful and blunt.

And I have had many people give me their opinions on the names, and some dislike them.  And surprise, they actually say it to my face.  Maybe I surround myself with people who may not talk behind my back and aren't afraid to give an honest opinion without being rude.

You do not have to like my names, that was never the issue.  I'm sorry if my replies were ever construed in that way.

  • What makes a name legit?  Because it is in a name book or on a website?  Or because that is the way it was originally spelled when the first ever Fallon was born?  It is the English language, one of the strangest and most difficult languages to learn.  Ridiculous?  Yes, but it doesn't make everything out of the ordinary wrong or not "legit".

  • I've never met a person with a jacked up spelling of their name who enjoys it. My mom's name is Renea instead of Renee and it is a headache to her all the time. People can't pronounce it and can't spell it. Not sure why anyone would want that.

  • I have a name that can legitimately be spelled three different ways (similar to the Jessica example above). It is not super common, but has been used in tv shows and there are actresses with my name so people know how to pronounce it. My spelling is the second most common so I always have to spell it. And my last name is a doozy so I have to spell that as well. It is annoying. IMHO, giving your kid a unique spelling doesn't make people say "oh how cool. Your parents gave you a special spelling because they love you and they are super cool." It makes people think "you poor kid. Your parents saddled you with a bad name because they thought it was cool. Or they can't spell."
  • I guess I am not as judgemental as so many, especially when it comes to names.  I work within Human Resources in a large company and never judge a person by their name and certainly not by spelling.  That is not something I consider when hiring.  I don't worry about teen parents or their family.

And I am not a sensitive person by any means and can take just as much as I can give, but it does surprise me how harsh people can be under the "cloak" of the internet.  I feel bad for some of these women on here who are looking for guidance and get bashed for a certain choice they have made.

I appreciate the opinions and facts some provided.

They are different. But they are not cool. Appearing to be unable to spell isn't cool. There are thousands of interesting and uncommon names that could be spelled correctly without the risk of running into a million other girls with the same name. Pick one of those or prepare to be given the side-eye and to have people wonder what the hell you were thinking. Also, prepare for your daughters to get annoyed with having to spell out their names every damn time they are on the phone. In all honesty, the spellings you are suggesting aren't just wrong, they also look hideous in any case.

    @bromios

^:)^   You are epic. And 100% correct.

Just wondering why if Fallyn is so awesomesauce then why did you have to spell it properly in parentheses so we'd know what the crap you were even talking about?

  • I have to set one thing straight.  I am in NO WAY trying to be cool with the spellings of my daughters' names.  I am not sure how that got thrown into the mix or misconstrued in that way.  I don't want someone to think "Oh that is a cool name, your parents must be cool."  I personally want to like the name and I would prefer it not be mispronounced.  Which is why I appreciate every opinion on the Lie Vee pronunciation, this was something I didn't consider - as I stated previously.
  • Did you just say awesomesauce?  Wow.  I never once argued that there were not original spellings to particular names, i.e. Fallon.  I am arguing against why you can or cannot change the spelling, as many people do over the years.  And I personally like the pronunciation of Fallyn over Fallon. In my OPINION, Fallon is not anymore proper than Fallyn.

  • OP you know that Olivia is one of the most popular names for girls in North America, right? And lots of little Olivias get called Livi/Livvie/whatever as a nickname? Your little Lyvee will not be unique or different just because you spell her name weirdly. When you call it out on the playground it will sound exactly like all the other Livis there.

    I actually like Fallon...spelled Fallon.
