Did you just say awesomesauce? Wow. I never once argued that there were not original spellings to particular names, i.e. Fallon. I am arguing against why you can or cannot change the spelling, as many people do over the years. And I personally like the pronunciation of Fallyn over Fallon. In my OPINION, Fallon is not anymore proper than Fallyn.
1) Yes. You read correctly.
2) You can change the spelling. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
3) If Fallyn is pronounced differently than Fallon, how come you used Fallon in perentheses behind Fallyn to explain to us what the crap we looking at?
I am also not a fan of top/common names. So you know what I did, ignored the top 50 or so names.
My DD is Katrina. It is like # 650. People can say it and spell it.
This one will be Victoria. Also a read name, with history, but she will not be Victoria M.
Also, my mom made up my name. It was a PITA growing up. Seriously. I have asked her how she went from my sister and brother, who had real names to mine.
I guess I am not as judgemental as so many, especially when it comes to names. I work within Human Resources in a large company and never judge a person by their name and certainly not by spelling. That is not something I consider when hiring. I don't worry about teen parents or their family.
And I am not a sensitive person by any means and can take just as much as I can give, but it does surprise me how harsh people can be under the "cloak" of the internet. I feel bad for some of these women on here who are looking for guidance and get bashed for a certain choice they have made.
I appreciate the opinions and facts some provided.
Please get off your high horse. Everyone judges, just like you're judging and probably cursing at us for not liking your name choices. We are giving you guidance. We're guiding you to pick better and correctly spelled options. In terms of name spelling changes and perception of illiteracy; the reason names spellings have changed and had variations over the centuries has to do with vast majority of people throughout history have been illiterate and had to spell names phonetically as best they could. In America a lot of names became Americanized for many reasons. My German grandma wanted to name my mom a family name of of Johanna but in 1944 German names obviously weren't popular so my mom became Jo-Ann. That is how name variants come to be. Not because you're resentful that you got saddled with an 80s name and now want to project your issue onto your children.
This thread is slowly collapsing...like a flan in a cupboard.....
Andplusalso, can you explain the difference in the Fallon vs. Fallyn pronunciation? I'm normally pretty good at that game (Emilia is not Amelia, etc.).
Wow. Thank you ladies for all the opinions and comments. This is completely getting out of hand. I shouldn't have to defend my character and I feel like that is what I am now doing. The comments aren't even about opinion anymore, they are disrespectful, including some of mine.
Many people, including myself, consider misspelled names low class and/or trashy. Something to consider when naming your child. Fallon is a nice name for a little girl. Livie is a great nn for Olivia.
I went to college with a girl named Fallon, pronounced "FAL-lin" (with a hard "a" like in "at"). Is that the pronunciation you're going for? I always thought it was a cool name and it fit her well. She was in a lot of my classes, and professors never seemed to have trouble pronouncing it. I think "Fallyn" looks more like beginning of an email or screen name.
I think Livie is a cute nickname. I actually love it as a nickname, but I think it might be too cutesy for a full name. What about just Liv? I would pronounce Lyvee "lie-vee."
How about Lydia? Has a similar sound and a "y"! I also like the name Livia.

Agreed. I've known more than one Fallon, pronounced with a hard A (or short A), as in "pal."

Dang I wish I were not on mobile so I could throw in an Izzard gif
I think lyn is more feminine than lon. I know a Braylon who is a boy and a Braylyn who is a girl. My mom's middle name is also Lyn, I like the incorportation.

I stand by my question that you didn't answer.......what's the pronunciation issue with Fallon that you don't like?

But the way it looks isn't an issue with pronunciation.
Oh man, if the BNB had a nickel for every time someone (wrongly) thinks that shoving a y in place of another vowel is an acceptable way of making a name "more feminine" we could open a school to educate mothers-to-be on the subject of spelling names!

This does not clear up any pronounciation issues. It's just saying you prefer a bizarre spelling over the correct spelling.
I agree with a lot of PP. Intentionally misspelling names to make them unique is not really acceptable to me. I honestly went to babynames.com and looked at the current ranking number in US births. I enjoy unique/eccentric names and all of the names on my list really had no ranking or were in the 200s out of x amount of US births. Why not pick a name that you like that you don't have to destroy with a bunch of replaced lettering?
In the end, you're asking a bunch of women over the Internet what they think of your potential names... if you're going to name them whatever anyways - why ask?
I did the exact same thing, top 300 were out. Regarding Fynlee; the Finlay and Finley versions were seen as masculine in other areas, so I wanted to change it up. My husband chose the final spelling. As I stated earlier, I like lyn better than lon. My mom's middle name is Lyn and I liked the fact that I could incorporate that. I didn't think replacing an o with a y was butchering, but according to all these ladies it is.
We were having a hard time between the two names and deciding. I figured I could get some unbiased opinions on which one to lean towards. I got that didn't I?
Regarding Fynlee; the Finlay and Finley versions were seen as masculine in other areas,
Well, it's not those spelling versions that are seen as masculine, the name itself is etymologically masculine, which is probably why you got the reactions that you did.

Yeah. You just gave your daughter a boys name AND a boys name spelled incorrectly. Which, BTW, I am not all tweaked out over because I have a daughter named Emerson. However, I fully own and understand that it has a masculine origin and didn't think I could change that by naming her Emmersynn. Because Emmersynn isn't a girls name either.
Also, I chose Finlay for a son. It doesn't make his name anymore masculine because you spelled yours Fynlee.
In my area I had never heard of the name Finlay or Finley, boy or girl. I went to school with someone of the last name Findley and loved it. I looked it up and saw a close pronunciation was a popular boys name, but was also unisex. We decided to make it more feminine, in OUR eyes. Masculine names for girls is actually something I love, but I always feel as if this is a matter of opinion and matters to where you live. Yes, the origin says one thing, but that doesn't change the way I feel when I hear or see a name. When you hear the name of someone you knew as a child, maybe even disliked, that is what you associate it with. This is the same reasoning I used, not to be different in spelling necessarily, but to like the feeling of the name when I see and hear it. Everyone feels different and my opinion is obviously different than most.
Oh wait, you have a Finley. Don't do Livie with Finley. Livia would work.
We call her Fyn 90% of the time. That is one reason we were questioning the name Fallyn, because there isn't a simple NN that comes out of Fallyn. We both love the idea of shortened names and liked Fyn and Liv. We will see. It is still a debate, obviously.
If you like names that end in Lyn than what is wrong with names that actually end in Lyn?
Carolyn Rosalyn Gwendolyn Caitlyn
I don't really care for those names, personally.
How about you give a few other names you like? We're almost at the 100 post mark. So far no one, not a single other person on TB likes your choice of Fallyn. A few of us got behind Livie (if spelled this way). The way I see it you could either 1) open your mind and potentially explore other options, maybe you'll find a new name you hadn't even thought of. We had Brinleysmom on here before whom was in your situation, but around post 20 she realized her choices weren't popular. She said her criteria and we all had a great discussion and she found some names she really loved that she hadn't considered. If that doesn't sound like something you want to do than, in all seriousness you'll need to go to a more juvenile board. This board is not for pats in the back for cre8tiveness. The women here are well versed in history, literature, religion, international studies etc who truly appreciate the value of quality names and like to discuss just that. We don't agree on names all names and our tastes are quite broad.

The tastes do not seem so broad, but I will give it a shot. My husband is usually the one to deny all name choices and never loved the idea of Fallon (Fallyn as I would put it) , but went along with it because we couldn't agree on anything else. Maybe this could help narrow down possibilities:
I would never choose a name in the top 300 name list, I would like it to sound good with Fynlee (or Finley, let the eye rolls commence), go with middle names Hope or Faith (family tradition), have a shortened one syllable NN

Fallon or Livie.
I agree that my instinct with Lyvee is to say Lie-vee.
Oh wait, Fallyn isn't supposed to be Fallon?
Then how is Fallyn supposed to be pronounced?

Do you pronounce Fallyn the same as Fallon?
