It makes me feel better knowing some of you are having cheat meals!!!! My shower is tomorrow and all I want is one of the cupcakes my MIL special ordered before I knew I had GD!!!!!
I totally cheated last night for Valentines Day. I've been testing 4xs a day since Tuesday and every single reading has been within range, so last night I had one Godiva truffle and a big piece of cookies and cream cheesecake.
Two hours after dinner I was at 139 (supposed to be under 120), but then my fasting number was back in range this morning, so I'm not going to feel too bad about an occasional cheat.
Did anybody else cheat for dinner tonight and have a high # after? I totally splurged and had fish fry and ended up at 147 an hr after. Now I feel guilty
That was me last night.. Plus a high fasting this morning my doctor said one high number is not the end of the world so I don't feel that bad. But definitely felt guilty anyways..
Same here I didn't have to test after dinner since I'm only testing twice a day now but my fasting number was 103 this am but after breakfast it was down to 90 so I'm not concerned.
I can get a fasting of 103, get up to pee and test again and have it be like 97, then test again immediately and have it be like 94. I've also gotten like a 107, then peed and tested again and gotten like an 87. So I'm not sure how seriously to take my fasting number, anyway.

Idk if you were asking me but I eat a lot of fat. Full fat dairy, Brie cheese, butter freely, and at least half a avocado most days. And at least two eggs a day, and tons of nuts.

Yes I was - Im not good at posting on here! What has been most frustrating for me is that every appointment that I've had I've been told different things, each Educator has been worried about different things, and my OB is not concerned at all. I'm measuring on schedule. I'm only eating about half of what the recommended carbs are, my ketones in the morning have all the negative except today was trace, I feel full, and all my readings have been good except for my morning fast. The last three nights I actually started having a midnight snack, which seems to help. I had an appointment yesterday and they want me to start the insulin at night, but I'm still hoping I can balance it with diet.
To add to my previous rant, I started crying my appointment yesterday because I don't want to have to use the insulin, I'm scared of needles. The nurse seemed shocked that I was so upset....ugh! Of course I'm upset when I'm getting the runaround from all your nurse educators, with different feedback but my OB isn't concerned.
Woo, first insulin shot under my belt! You ladies were right, I didn't feel a thing. Was looking away as I poked the needle into my leg and actually had to look down at it to make sure it was, in fact, in my flesh because I couldn't feel anything. Was expecting to feel some muscle/skin displacement like flu shots and things as I pushed the insulin in, but nada. Way easier than I thought!

I know! My doctor advised me the finger pricks are not that accurate but it is still annoying how off they can be! I usually try to wait at least 15 minutes between readings if I am double checking.. Yesterday I testers after dinner and was at 6.5, I tested 15 mins later and was at 7.8??? It's so confusing! My fasting was back to normal this morning with the same amount of insulin so at least there's that..

That's great!! I keep switching legs each night and rotating spots.. I won't lie, some spots hurt more than others but it's usually pain free. Glad you're first shot went well!
So my update... I have a mild mild case of GD but still have it. The endo wants to follow me until 35 weeks (so less than 2 more weeks to go) to make sure I stay good as hormones peak. I seem to be fine whatever I eat BUT I had a bowl of lentil soup and a bun at lunch yesterday thinking ya, this should be fine - lentils are high fibre and protein so it should even out the carb load. Holy heck... Highest number yet (8.3 when I should be less than 7.2 - Cda measures are different). Guess beans are not good and for whatever reason my body struggles to break the sugars down properly. I can have a Nanaimo bar or cookie, no problem, but beans set my sugars off the chart! Anyone else have certain food items that make things wacky?
Beans count as a carb not a protein. A serving of beans is ½ c, so a bowl of lentil soup and a bun is probably 5-6 carb exchanges, which is like twice what you "should" have.

So I've made "lasagna" but subbed thin slices of lightly sautéed eggplant in place of noodles. If I don't go crazy with the sauce, we should be good. Stay tuned.

I'm afraid to cheat with pasta, I've had some high numbers with rice, so I'm trying to make switches where I can. It was good, I'll be testing in about an hour, so the truth will come out! ETA/ 94 at my two hour. Good thing there are leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

I haven't started testing yet...class is next week. I'm kind of feeling guilty for the pasta I ate today now. Whoops. I'm a total carb junky, so this is going to be really difficult for me I fear. At least my numbers on the 1 & 3 hour were borderline?

This probably explains why my sugars were a bit high after having veggie and lentil soup, I didn't even think of that!

Splured a little at dinner & had a small slice of cheesecake with fresh strawberries. Took my insulin too & was 170 an hour after, took a small dose of insulin again (per my Dr if I am over 150). 2hrs post dinner was 141. I feel so guilty :-( just had my a1c done last week & was 5.1- perfect they said..also had an ultrasound & baby measuring right at 50th percentile.... trying to think more about that.

Try not to beat yourself up. I splurged way more than that and was in a similar boat Friday. I think if you are consistently splurging that would obviously become a problem but we all need a little treat once in awhile and I'm sure our babies are just fine as long as we're keeping things in check most of the time. This is what my dh says to me when I'm upset about a high number and although I'm not a dr I think he is probably right.
I've managed to catch the cold that everyone has had around me despite my efforts to avoid all the coughing, germ-demons in my office that don't know what sick days are for.
Anyway. I've been throwing up for the last 2 days and my numbers are within normal ranges but I have no idea how to track my intake. I've just been writing own everything and then noting if I threw up afterwards and then testing at the 2 hr mark as instructed.
I'm not really in an eating mood and I'm kind of skipping over snacks and missing my calorie and carb goals. Any one know how I should handle this? just listen to my body and eat when I feel up to it or do I try and force the snacking schedule and eat when i'm supposed to even if it makes my stomach feel lousy?
I have a sizing ultrasound on Tuesday and I see my MW right after that. I emailed my diabetic nutrition counselor but I don't think I'll see a response from her until monday and I don't feel like this an emergency to call into the nurses line.
@playingonadream I think that your care providers will know to take your illness into account. I'm sure it's good that you are still tracking what you eat and your numbers, but I personally would not force myself to adhere to the snacking/ schedule if I felt nauseous. Just stay hydrated and keep down what you can, that would be my advice.

When I had my stomach but I went with what I felt like. I didn't eat or drink a thing for about 12 hours, then small amounts of weak Gatorade and apple sauce for probably another 12 hours after that, then slowly worked on getting back on the wagon. I've read when you're not really eating you should just test every 4 hours, but I just spot checked here and there.

The nutritionist is having me track everything I eat (amount, time, was I hungry, "Feelings", and comments). I did ok the first two days, following her meal plan. But, there is sooo much bread. I haven't been over my test limits, but I don't have enough bread products in the house and I don't like them. She wants me to eat 9 servings a day!
I started getting bloaty and I'm pretty sure that is why.
My next comment will probably be "I couldn't stomach anymore bread. I ate a salad instead."
Stupid food pyramid or plate or whatever it is now.
Ugh, this... for me it's a LOT of carbs. I didn't realize how low carb we were eating, but I've had to add a lot in. My nutritionist was pretty firm about it though, saying that spilling ketones would be pretty bad for the baby, so I'm trying to stick to it, but gaining weight so much faster now than I was. Some weight gain is probably good, but now I'm worried too much will make the GD worse.
For "grains" I sub in things like Wasa crackers, whole wheat tortillas, quinoa, brown rice, and beans. I splurge with some corn chips here and there to spice things up (corn chips with salsa/guac is a favorite snack). Another favorite snack is 2 wasa crackers with cream cheese, sea salt and onion powder. Did they say it had to be all bread or just carbs? I also eat sprouted bread which are supposed to be more gentle on your blood sugar.

thanks ladies. I'm not off food entirely but its mostly broth with saltines right now. If I get hungry I kind of just grab what I'm craving. Had an apple and a 2 cups of unsweetened herbal tea last night which was fine but all that I ate for 4 hours. I'm so congested and tired that I just kind of nap all day. baby has been kicking away though, so I feel like I'm ok as long as I don't see any change in her. I'm just so frustrated by this GD to begin with and this is just making everything harder. sorry to be a whiner.
Ooh that sounds good! I've been tolerating pasta surprisingly well. Always mixed with lots of veggies, though.
Me too, but only whole wheat pasta, regular pasta will spike me to above 200. One of my favorite meals right now is WW pasta topped with roasted broccoli, spaghetti sauce and parm cheese.

I'm completely ignoring the advice on how many carbs at this point and just trying to eat some with every meal/snack, eat the kinds I like and what and how much makes me feel good. I think theres hysteria from some people about ketones. I eat plenty of calories and I doubt with eating even 100-150 g of carbs today I'm making large amounts of ketones.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
She said bread, the worksheet I have to fill out says "Grains" with 9 little check boxes at the top. But it's more than just carbs since I get carbs from dairy, veggies, and fruits too (100-150g a day when I tracked the past week) and those have their own boxes to check.
While walking the dog, I told DH I'm not eating extra bread just to check off boxes. I can get healthy carbs from other sources. If a nutritionist tells me I eat too much salad, awesome. Maybe at the next appointment, we can just work out a carb goal instead. That seems more workable. But their standard meal plan is not for me.
I started gaining weight faster too. I think it is mostly water for now as I started getting puffy sausage fingers and toes. I hope that goes away as I switch back to normal-for-me carbs.
I looooove black beans in my salads. Garbanzo beans are also a good source of healthy carbs (plus their so damn yummy). If you haven't tried sneaking carbs in that way, it might help!
I've totally been doing this. It's way more carbs than I usually eat too and we are going through bread way faster. I do the sprouted bread as well which is better but still. I like to add in black beans, garbanzo beans and corn to try o get enough carbs. I got yelled at to eat way more carbs too but I wasn't told it had to be grains. That's weird. I wonder why it matters
Yeah the carb stuff does seem kinda crazy. I just have carb goals for meals and snacks, but sometimes I'm scrounging to add in carbs. Like a PB smoothie with almond milk, PB, ice and a bit of protein powder is very filling and plenty but only has like 6g of carbs so then I'm scrounging around trying to add in some fruit on the side or something.
I'm with you guys, I think I'm going to cool it a bit about worrying about it. I gained 3lbs in 1 week following their guidelines whereas before I was doing the normal about 0.5 lbs per week. I'm thinking my worsening polyhydramnios may be contributing to the weight gain, but it doesn't feel like the carbs are helping either.

@rrrrrachel yeah that's nuts, esp when things like berries esp have so much good fiber and other nutrients. I was told to be careful about too many fruit servings in 1 sitting but that it all counts the same towards "carbs."

Yeah obviously fruit is something you need to be careful with, but an apple or some berries is way less glycemic than a potato!!
We went out to eat tonight and I got a burger but swapped the fries for a salad. I did eat some of my daughters fries. I did not test after.
I had the same thing last night and only ate the bottom bun. My # was okay after surprisingly.
