How often do you have a glass of wine?

Re: How often do you have a glass of wine?

  • The night before I tested positive we had a big wine tasting party at our house.  Otherwise, I never really drank last pregnancy, except for a sip here and there in 3rd tri.  I was so sick the entire time that even those sips tasted awful to me.

Not a huge fan of drinking during pregnancy, but also do not think a few sips are harmful at all.

  • I'm a worrier so I haven't had any. Probably in third tri I'll be a little braver about it.

  • I chose to abstain. I have no problem with a small glass of wine, except that I have never been able to have only one small glass! DH has been told to sneak a bottle into the delivery room post push ;)Lilypie Pregnancy tickers
  • The big concern is that scientists don't know how much alcohol causes defects.  I've had drs say a glass here or there is okay as long as it's red wine which is super rich in heart healthy antioxidants (My cousin, who is a dr, has called white wine the equivalent of high calorie sugar water since fruits and veg that are bright colours are generally more nutrient rich).  Another concern with wine, or any fruit juice, is the sugar content since it's a fruit based beverage where copious amounts of sugar has been added, so if anything, that should limit your consumption!

Bottom line, a glass of wine is about 3 oz but, because we don't know how much alcohol is needed before there are problems, the safest bet is to abstain but a tiny bit here and there isn't going to hurt anyone.
  • I love that all you ladies have been supporting a few glasses of wine per week! This is my first pregnancy and I'm paranoid about everything and have lots of judgmental people around me so have stayed away from the wine SO FAR.  But now that I'm at 15 weeks, and see that there are many in favour of it, tonight I will be enjoying a glass of  the amazing ice wine sitting in my fridge for about three months! TGIF ladies!

  • I haven't had more than a sip or two of my husband's beer since finding out I am pregnant. I did drink after conception though because, well, I didn't know that I was.

I don't think I'm opposed to having a small glass or wine or beer, but I just haven't wanted to. Maybe when the weather gets warmer closer to my due date I'll have something. Hot weather just makes me want a drink lol.

<-----not one sip nor glass of wine and beer for me. I am playing it safe and keeping a healthy body. I miss drinking but I can wait after delivery. On my list of things to eat and drink until the baby is in my arms.
  • If you are worried about lower IQ because of small amounts of alcohol just eat a little more fish high in omega-3's.
  • I've never been a big drinker, so none!
I also don't judge if someone has an occasional glass.
  • My 56 year old dad had a heart attack scare today and is in the hospital until Monday...I'm pouring myself a 6oz taster of my husband's home brewed black IPA as soon as I put my son to bed. I feel like it's better than the stress and not sleeping. I had 4oz of wine every few days or so after week 33 when I was pregnant with my son b/c I had premature labor pains and my midwife said it would be a good idea...I wasn't going to argue.

Thank you! I finally got to talk to him, and he sounds tired, but good. They are keeping him until Monday just to observe, and he'll get a stress test first thing. I'm really just hoping that it was one huge anxiety attack! I was fine when I was on the phone with him, but of course started ugly crying like a 5yo after I hung up! I'm happy he's being watched :)

  • I choose to go without. I feel guilty when I eat a french fry.....I can't imagine indulging in some delicious wine. It makes me happy to see the lack of judgement here though!
  • I've only had about 5 or 6 glasses since this pregnancy and I haven't had any in a while though. Never was a big drinker and the wine was starting to make my stomach hurt so I stopped

    It's a BOY

  • I haven't had any since finding out I was pregnant. I miss it desperately! I keep telling my husband I am going to out a bottle in my hospital bag to celebrate with after our little one arrives :)
  • FYI, for you ladies abstaining til the 'delivery room'... if you plan to BF, this discussion continues for months or years!

Sorry... it's 40 weeks. If you can't live without wine you have some serious issues. I would never compromise my baby's wellbeing on purpose.... 1 glass or 4 glasses a week.

Oh, a sanctimommy. Well, that's original. :::::insert eye roll here:::::

Honestly, what an asshole comment to make. It's fine if you want to abstain, if that's what makes you comfortable, but you really have no business judging when some ob's (mine included) have no issue with a few glasses of wine per week. I'm pretty sure he knows far better than you.
Put it this way.... I did it all right- the prenatal vitamins, the eating right, staying hydrated etc.- and I still ended up with a pregnancy I need to terminate tomorrow at 27 weeks.

I stand by what I said- I would NEVER compromise my babies wellbeing on purpose. You never know what can happen.

So you can take your eye roll and shove it.

  • This is an interesting one to consider! I personally am not drinking for the duration of my pregnancy, and that's a personal choice. My longtime boyfriend has an Aunt who has an issue with drinking a bit too heavily (I don't think I'd categorize her as a full fledged alcoholic, but she definitely is dependent on liquor.) She drank around 2 drinks a day or more with her oldest child, and she has fetal alcohol syndrome. Obviously this is an example of a person who has seriously given up on her prenatal responsibilities (and I am NOT trying to compare this situation to that one), but it was enough to scare me out of any alcohol! However, so many Mom's in europe never change their intake; also, it was not seriously uncommon for people to be told to stop drinking until more modern practices came along. I don't understand the need to have 3-4 glasses a week (in my opinion, that's not indulging occasionally, that's just plain sticking to your habits), but it's up to each person's comfort level and the advice of their doctor. My OB said, "a little alcohol, cigarette smoke or junk food occasionally isn't going to kill you; just don't make it a habitual thing." I'm sticking to that advice, and putting my own needs into the mix as well.

I think it's great to indulge yourself during pregnancy - to me, "indulging" means enjoying a glass or wine (or whatever your prefer) occasionally as a treat. I don't think doing that four days a week can count as indulging anymore, but as long as baby and Mom are healthy then I say it's up to them! It's not right for me, but that doesn't mean that they are irresponsible. I mean hell, I absolutely cannot stay away from salsa and queso dip or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I eat at least 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a snack a day (I consider this a "snack" for God's sakes - and I don't even put it on whole wheat because I crave only white bread), and I indulge at least one a week in some queso and chips. Some Mom's would be appalled by that! Who am I to judge? :)

Also - to the person who said they would only "raise an eyebrow" if it was more than 3 or 4 glasses a day - I think maybe you should be raising more than an eye brow if they are plowing through more than a bottle daily. I think that's a little bit of a silly statement..

  • I have been craving for wine but due to fear of heart burn, I haven't had one.
  • @veetveet I am sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine what you must be going through.

I applaud your answer to Bliss + Berry and her favorite "Santimommy" catch-phrase. I think you might be the first person that has stuffed a sock in her.

For your reference if anyone whats to compare to previous posts on this subject.

I personally won't indulge but that's based on my personal experience and research. To anyone who chooses to indulge while pregnant, it's your body your choice.

I stand by what I said.  You can make whatever choices you are comfortable with, but saying that those who don't make the same choices you would have "serious issues" is going to draw criticism.

It's one thing to say you don't drink, but judging others who do really isn't your place.

I'm sorry- but if you cannot go 40 weeks without alcohol there is something wrong. You judge my comment- I can judge yours.

Alcohol is not a necessity... period.

There is plenty of time to indulge after. This is a time to treat your body right for the sake of the life that is inside.

  • 40 weeks is a LONG time! That's damn near a year! With my new super human nose, wine smells even more amazing than ever! I have about 1 glass of wine or 10oz of beer a week. At Thanksgiving we brought an amazing wine that I kept smelling and commented on how great it smelled. My MIL picked up the bottle and moved it across the table from me. Rude!! My DH snuck me a sip later.
  • I've heard 2-3 glasses a week is fine. My 21st birthday was back in January and I had a really hard time drinking just 1 glass of wine. However, I'm just extremely paranoid. I wouldn't even take Tylenol for cramps or headaches. But I don't judge anyone who has a couple drinks a week, if I weren't such a chicken I'm sure I would too. First-time-mom paranoia I guess. haha.

  • I had a glass of cabernet sauvignon on Christmas and would have another if a reason to celebrate or special occasion came up... Or if I really wanted one. :)
  • I haven't had any alcohol thus far. No judgement on those that have or will. It's a personal choice.

Matthew930 I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I hope he is doing better and gets to come home soon.

    @veetveet I am so sorry.
  • My midwife suggested I drink a few glasses of wine a week in third trimester when I was pregnant with my DS because I have gestational hypertension. I was technically under the drinking age (20, turned 21 three days before I gave birth) so I didn't have any. I wish I did. I was absolutely miserable the last few weeks of my pregnancy with the hypertension and was facing induction because of it (I went into labor naturally on the day of my induction). I have not drank yet during this pregnancy but I will probably start to enjoy a half glass of beer or wine once a week, especially if I start having the hypertension again.

  • I don't drink any alcohol while pregnant. I don't need it and it isn't helping the baby at all.... in fact there are some negative research points on it that are possible. Better safe than sorry for me :)
  • I had a couple of glasses of wine total when I was pregnant the first time. I haven't had any so far this time, but I will likely have some on DH's and my anniversary near the end of March and then an occasional glass in third tri when I'm tired and cranky and just need a little help relaxing. To each her own! My philosophy is that moderation is key in pretty much everything.
