Re: Dumb Questions

  • Ds#1 was ff and ds #2 was bf #1 had horrible smelling diapers 8-X

  • Contractions only when i sit or stand and walk.
They space back out when i lay down.
    Would you call the doctor?

When i am walking or sitting they get to be a minute and a half long and around 6/7 minutes apart.

I know call doctor but i don't want to be that girl that calls all the time.

Yeah, yesterday i had like 5 bottles or right around 90-100oz.

Today i am a little behind and have only had about 40/50oz.

  • My dumb question is how and when do docs know if baby is breech? Is this confirmed by U/S or is it just obvious? And it is a real thing to meet with OB to turn the baby?

I had a feeling when his position was more painful and the hiccups moved from my crotch to my ribs. MW confirmed yesterday that he had in fact flipped. She wasn't sure by feel but where the heartbeat was and by how loud it was she knew for sure then.

    DS #2 - EDD 3/2014
  • Ok as soon as I noticed this I had to get straight on here and go to the dumb questions thread.

Can you see your baby practice breathing?? At first I thought it was my pulse. Nope. Different speed. I can actually see my belly go up and down pretty quickly, just like he's breathing. Is this crazy? Asking my doc tomorrow.
  • Ugh well I guess mine was pretty dumb. But I've never heard of that and just assumed when they practiced breathing it would be more like a few breaths, not 3 solid minutes of breathing.

Ugh. If I can give you my baby's hiccups, I would. This kid gets them waaay too often.

Mine does too! All. The. Time. Plus when he gets them it's like it annoys him or something and he starts kicking and moving all around. Hiccups plus kicking when I'm trying to relax or sleep really sucks!

ETA: I hit post too soon
  • First off - I second a lot of PPs and I love this post.  I've learned a lot of random but useful information!

Around how many weeks did your LO's movements start waking you up at night?  I know it most likely depends on how light/heavy of a sleeper you are, but is it definitely going to happen at some point?  It hasn't happened for me yet but I want to know if I need to brace myself for this to start at some point.

  • Do i really need a PNP sheet?
No.  I've had a PNP for babysitting for years and any time they puke or whatever I end up wiping up the vinyl mat under the sheet anyway.  I guess when there's been a huge mess it made clean up a hair easier, but no you don't need one.
  • Do i really need a PNP sheet?
I would guess it depends what you are using the PNP for... we will be using ours as a crib for at least the first couple months, so we will get extra sheets and waterproof pads for easier middle of the night changes...

  • I thought of one - baby care books recommend that you call your doctor if a newborn has a temperature of 101 or higher.  Is that a rectal temp (which apparently we don't do anymore) or an axillary temp?  If it's rectal, what's the corresponding axillary temp I should call the doctor at?

  • OK, one more. My mom just sent me her birth stories (from her journal) for my brother & I....and they shaved her as part of the prep for labor. Do they still do that?! I am trying to keep things trim down there...but not shaved by any means (who can reach / see!?).

When I had my scheduled csection, the nurse shaved me while I was prepping. I had no idea or I would've done it myself. As far as a vaginal birth I don't know.

I shave blindly, but I'll be ready for it this time around.

  • For STMs who formula fed, how much would you say you spent a week/month for formula? How long did it take you to go through a can of the powdered stuff?

Also, is it common to supplement a feeding or two a day with formula? I'm really worried about PPD/PPA and just knowing I wasn't solely responsible for every feeding would be a huge relief.

Nothing wrong with supplementing and the formula I used (10 years ago) was like $11 a can now it's $16 I think. And at first 1 can lasted a little over a week. As baby grows and needs more. I think towards the end of a year we were at about 2 or 3 cans a week. My memory is a little foggy lol. With ds #2 he wouldn't take a bottle so I had to ebf.

I know this isn't your question, but it just want to throw out there re: formula cost that if you coupon for nothing else, do coupons for formula.  There are a zillions out there to be had and they're really high value.  Alternatively, I've heard good things about the up & up formula from Target (it's their house brand). Just watching the prices casually over the past few months, u&u seems to run about 50-60% of the simlac or enfamil prices.

you're going to tell me about the stork that will deliver my baby to my house, right? Or it is more like the UPS guy with an Amazon box?

Wait... does that mean my future kids will be delivered by drone?

  • Seriously. Some lurker please ask how babies are made. I won't flame you!!!!

There was a girl in my 300-level bio class at school who openly admitted she had NO IDEA that woman gave birth vaginally. She was like "wait, babies come out of the vagina?!" She also had no idea that women used birth control pills as birth control. It made me sad.

MH didn't know how boy vs girl babies happen.  He's from TX and I will never, ever stop pointing that out as a condemnation of his red state education.

Sounds like MH. We had a conversation the other day, I won't get into it, but he had no clue babies were in the uterus and this is out second child. SMH. I chalk it up to him being blonde.

  • At how many weeks are you supposed to get the strep B test?

I'm getting mine at my 36 week appointment. They were nice enough to give me the heads up at my last appointment (34 weeks).

Usually a month before you edd. With DS I had mine done twice, once in the early 30's because I had some issue.. I forget what it was.

I just did mine at my last week appointment - 36 weeks give or take a few days. I was lucky to get to do my own though.

  • So mw and books seem pretty against using wet wipes for babies and recommend cotton buds and warm water. My question is two-fold: Is this just one of those advise things I ignore or is it serious? If it's serious, do I fill a little cup with warm water every time I go change baby's diaper? Or do I keep a thermos or something at the changing table. Just not sure how practical the whole thing is. Not like the wet wipes contain acid or anything!
  • Here's a SUPER dumb question. How do you know when the baby needs a nap? Do you just assume and put them down based on a fair prediction? Or do you wait until they're falling asleep in your arms?

I know when they get older they sometimes fall into a routine but for newborns I'm assuming it'll be when they fall asleep in your arms? I'm just thinking about the moms I know who put their babies down for naps while they're still awake and then a few moments later the babies are out cold.
  • @FarmBoysWife thanks for the response. Sounds like a wait and see and try a few things out.
  • How long does the NST go for?
I've got to do it twice a week starting soon, no idea how much time I need to carve out for that.

    Today mine was 30 mins.

I compared Enfamil Infant (not newborn) and Enfamil Sensitive to the up&up equivalents and they are 99.9% the same. We are planning to do Enfamil newborn until he is 3 months and then switch to the up&up sensitive (unless we have Enfamil gentlease coupons) since it's that much cheaper!
