Dumb Questions

Re: Dumb Questions

  • Ok..so I just thought about this last night. I plan to make padsicles (here is what I'm thinking https://www.tallmomtinybaby.com/2013/05/padsicles-new-mom-perfect-companion.html?m=1)  for when I come home from hospital. Even though I hope I'm superwoman and have no tearing, I know how sore i was just from my D&C. But my question is, if I have a padsicle on, it most likely won't absorb any bleeding, right? Any STM+ used these before and how did you handle bleeding?

I never used the straps on the changing pad. By the time DS started moving around enough to roll himself off the table, we just changed him on the floor. I personally think it's a bad idea to stock up on diapers.
I'm beginning to start to do this, at least a little bit, so would you mind sharing a bit more why you think it's a bad idea? Thanks. :-)

  • What happens once your water breaks? How long do you have to get to the hospital? Can DH take me to the hospital or am I supposed to go in an ambulance?

Our babysitter is someone we used before we moved to our new house so she lives an hour away and is scheduled to come for my scheduled c-section during the days I'll be in the hospital. If I went into labor early, and she was able to get here last minute it would take at least an hour. Could I wait for her to get here before leaving for the hospital?

With DS I was dilated to a 4 for several weeks prior to my water breaking and my doctor was convinced that I would have him early. She told me that if jy water broke I needed to get to the hospital fairly quickly just in case I progressed quickly. My water broke at 1 AM and we were at the hospital by 2. Of course, I ended up having no contractions and had to be induced anyways. Check with your doctor and see his/her thoughts on it. Some will allow you to wait awhile before coming in. The biggest concern after your water breaks is possible infection.

  • @stufie I don't think anyone responded to your question... But yes, you can definitely take off the swing cover and wash it.  Unfortunately DD had lots of diaper blowouts in her swing, so I got really good at taking the cover off, washing it, and putting it back on.  You can even take the straps off if you need to.

  • @Stephout, different babies will have different preferences on milk temps. We warmed DS' milk a little bit at first and for some reason we gave him a bottle cold once. He loved it and actually preferred his milk (breast or formula) cold or room temp. If they will take bottles like that it can be easier to feed them when out and about.

  • Loving this thread!! So with CD's with inserts, when you get ready to wash them do you pull the insert out first and then wash them all together? Or do you toss the whole thing in the wash and separate them after? I'm guessing separate them first.... FTM, First time CD'er here
wash them all together. I'd pull the inserts out then throw the shell in (if it was pee). If it's poop, get some of the poop off in the toilet first.

My wash routine was: rinse cycle for poo diapers first (in the washer), then add detergent and the rest of your diapers (inserts, pee shells, covers, etc) AND I also added the rest of my baby laundry for a normal hot wash cycle! Sometimes I'd do another rinse but it's not really necessary.

  • @bingbongsmama - it's totally different for everyone. For me, I had no contractions until my water broke and we went from 0-50 in minutes. As soon as my water broke contractions were on top of each other and we raced to the hospital (and I was 7 cms)

But I actually have 2 friends who have had babies in the last couple of months and their water broke like a day before they had the baby. Water broke then....nothing. They had to do things to get contractions going.

It sucks but it's SO up in the air and there's no way to plan for it.

  • I feel a flood of dumb questions coming on after having our shower and looking at all this baby stuff. I should probably wash binkies and bottles before use right? What about tethers? What about the toys and stuffed animals? Bath toys? Fabric things on the new bouncer, new swing? I don't know where to draw the line and I'm feeling overwhelmed.

sterilize bottles and binkies (just boil in water for like 5 minutes or so). teething toys yes I always washed and/or sterilized. toys that they will chew, yes - stuffed animals, I never did. Bath toys eeehhh you probably don't need to. And if you're getting new bouncer and swing don't bother washing. If you buy used you'll probably want to run it through the washer.

  • @laura8388   kellymom has an article about breast milk intake, with a fairly nifty calculator.  The short answer, of course, is it depends.  You might want to read through this then talk to his ped about how you should adjust your expectations due to him being a premie

FWIW - I know that my niece was taking 8oz (~240 ML) bottles by 6 months or so.  Personally I'd probably want to keep it as 2x 100 ML bags to avoid wasting it though.

Everyone is different. Some peoples water doesn't break until they are in active labour. Some peoples breaks an hour before contractions start. Mine broke 8 days before contractions started.

Your labour may start at cramps, as back pain, as throwing up:.. Many options, so sorry can't give you a definite answer on the babysitter!
To go along with what Laura said, talk to your OB/MW because each has different 'rules' on how they want to handle water breaking.
Plus if you are GBS+ you'll have to get started on antibiotics very soon after.

I'd see if you can find a local baby sitter for the just in case, because you never know!
I'm going to ask at my next app!
    What is GBS+ ?

Its the group B strep test they swab your vagina and from what i understand the outside of your rectum.
    They test around 35/36 weeks.
If you are positive you get antibiotics when you go into labor so it won't pass to baby!

Oh ok! I tested + to strep B last time so I'm kind of expecting it again.
  • Okay heres my dumb question...i just don't feel like starting the 1000th thread on movement.

My baby has been head down, but always in an "C" type shape, with her head in my pelvis and feet curved around.
But if Lo has moved to the head down birthing position would i feel a decrease in movement, since she is facing my spine now?

I hope this is making sense. She is moving just not as often as she usually is. Of course i always have lower movement days when we go through a growth spurt...so that could be it to.

  • @amymheidecker I don't know the answer to your specific question, but according to my OB, it is normal to feel less movement and/or less vigorous movement from 32 weeks onward as the baby runs out of room to move as much.  This is one of the 'discharge notes' I get on the print out every visit since 3rd tri started - presumably they get a lot of people commenting/worrying about it :)
  • @ceh789 thanks! I figured as much but its still nerve wracking!

This is how my first DS was for my entire third tri and by the time I went into labor his head was engaged perfectly. I always got the kicks in my side, never my ribs. I think this LO is starting to settle into a similar spot. I've felt less movement recently and I think his butt is poking out and he's got his arms and legs towards my back.

  • My dumb question is how and when do docs know if baby is breech? Is this confirmed by U/S or is it just obvious? And it is a real thing to meet with OB to turn the baby?

  • @amyheidecker, you will need a base that specifies that it is a classic connect. The one you have listed from Amazon is a click connect. It would be something like this, I believe:

    Hope that helps!

  • My dumb question is how and when do docs know if baby is breech? Is this confirmed by U/S or is it just obvious? And it is a real thing to meet with OB to turn the baby?

With dd we didn't know until an ultrasound. Even the doctor thought she was feeling her head, which turned out to be her butt. I think she had an idea since she ordered the ultrasound right after though. Otherwise, I had no clue.

Everyone is different but with ds#2 I had him in 13 minutes after my water broke on its own in the hospital. My contractions weren't that bad or that close and surprise there's baby. No dr, no nurse, no H ( he hadn't arrived yet) it was just me and a lab tech.

I can still hear my nursing instructor yelling conversions at me, and that was years ago!

I can now literally feel a giant head in my ribs. I can't bend and have a hard time sitting because I feel like I am smushing it. It's the weirdest feeling. So I would have known even if I hadn't had an ultrasound (and even if I couldn't feel the outline of the head under my boobs).

Along with what others have said, I have known for weeks that baby *isn't* breech b/c I regularly feel hiccups VERY low,  like almost against my leg. I don't know what it would feel like breech, but I imagine it'd be a lot different.

38w 3 or 4d. He was like a freight train! Had a perfectly shaped head no cone head for that baby!
  • Ok another dumb q that's been on my mind. Are bigger babies typically stronger and healthier?

My DD was tiny at just over 6lbs born at 37 wks and went to the nicu. My friend's DS was 9lbs when she went into labor at 34 weeks! She didn't know she had GD and he got really big (I know, what kind of crappy prenatal care didn't catch her GD?!) anyway, he was early but healthy and went home right away.
  • Does your OB/MW do interval checks at every appointment after 36 weeks or so?
Also, for your postpartum checkups, do you bring LO?

You don't have to but I did. I didn't go anywhere without my bebe, especially at first! I always see moms with brand new babies at the ob.

Just an FYI, it's easier to cart them around when they're newborns, I even took DD to a dentist app the first year, just positioned the stroller so I could see her the whole time.

Oh, I thought of another question.  I know I've seen posts from ladies who say they have their hospital bag AND their diaper bag ready to go.  I was kind of under the assumption that the hospital would provide diapers/wipes and pretty much everything baby would need while at the hospital and that I would really only need an outfit to bring him home in and blankets to keep him warm between the hospital and the car.  Maybe this is something hospital specific that I should ask them about? (Or maybe some moms just need a whole diaper bag for that stuff?  I figured I would just put it in my bag...)

Also, I want to thank all of the ladies asking and answering questions here!  This thread has been really great, some of these are things I would have never even thought to ask.

I have 2 babies, but I packed their stuff in a seperate bag that we will leave in the car until we need it... I'm trying to minimize what we take into the hospital when I am actually in labor.

I'm not an expert by any means, but from what I have seen / friends experiences, yes, bigger = stronger, able to go home sooner
I would say yes and no. Bigger birthweights can really help them out, but I've heard a lot of stories with twins where the smaller one actually does better.

  • Dumb and kinda gross question, I have read that for BF you aren't supposed to use soap on the girls. Something to do with hormones and baby? So when do you stop using soap there? Just wait til after delivery because you'll have basically sweat everything off, or do you stop earlier than that, like while still pregnant?

Also, after you workout, do you need to like shower off before feeding baby? Will the sweat get into the milk or make them not want it?

    Insomniac thoughts are awesome lol.

  • I never heard of that I always washed my boobs when breastfeeding. I fact, I hated the sticky feeling so I washed more often. Maybe just use a gentle soap that's non toxic if you're worried

FTM here, I was on my hospital tour last night and I overheard another woman say breast-fed babies poops doesn't smell as bad formula fed babies (she claimed to not needing a diaper pail!) I've never heard this before so I didn't question it but it made me curious. STM who did both, or anyone with insight, is there any truth to this?
Yeah, this was true for us.  My nephews were formula-fed and their poop smelled pretty bad.  DD's didn't smell that way until we started solids, but we used the Diaper Genie from the beginning with her.

FTM, but I wonder if it has something to do with drying out your already sore nipples.  At my breastfeeding class the LC said that the no soap advice was a bit outdated but it's still best to use something gentle like Dove.
