Dumb Questions

F14 gave me this idea, so maybe if people want they can feel free to add their own "dumb questions" here that don't quite deserve their own threads?

- Do people actually use the straps on a changing pad? They seem like more of a hassle than they're worth...

- If you have medical breastfeeding issues (like an infection or something,) what kind of doctor do you go to? Your baby's ped? (like maybe if it's something that affects your baby like thrush or something?) or back to your OB? Or to your own personal family doctor?

- How do you "stock up" on diapers if you don't really know what will work for your baby? Like if you used the deals from here https://www.babycheapskate.com/2014/01/26/top-diaper-and-formula-deals-of-the-week-in-store-126/
You could really save a ton of money if you bought a few boxes every week... but how do you know what kind to buy? An assortment, since if one kind doesn't work you'll have to buy and try other kinds anyhow? Or is it better to just wait and see?

This exactly, only I was lucky and never had mastitis.  He told me to call him if I got it, though.

Once you know what type of diaper works best, you can order in bulk from Amazon or sign up for Amazon Mom.

I have a question, are car seat covers necessary? Do thy get peed on and stuff?
Necessary? No way. The one that comes with your carseat comes off so you can clean it. Sometimes you have to be careful with those because they can void your warranty if you were to get into an accident.

  • I never used the straps on the changing pad but I always was right there with the baby.

I got thrush, I went to the pedi for her issue and my OB for mine. It was AWFUL!

I am a coupon queen. I have so many diapers stocked up in all sizes, mostly Pampers and Huggies. I can't resist when I've been getting the jumbo packs for $2-$3.50 each. I got a 40 pack of Babyganics at Target for $1.99 yesterday. I have no idea if these diapers are good for but $1.99 I figure we'll try them out.

I recently read an article that said not to use the Bundle Me car seat cover things so I won't be using them. I plan to warm the car up and cover the baby with a thick blanket and hat, warm clothes but no big coats/snowsuits.

  • I never used the straps on the change pad and have been meaning to cut them off. I used them once or twice at the changing stations in public bathrooms when he was particularly rolly. But it didn't help a lot.

(Canada, everything is different disclaimer) After the 6 week pp checkup, I'd go to my family doctor for everything. If it's an issue that requires a specialist, she'd refer me back to the specialist.

Can't help with the diapers, we CD'ed.

Don't use anything that goes between the baby and the carseat. This is unnecessary and could possibly render your carseat warranty void.

  • Okay, so, we're supposed to wash baby's clothes before wear, and all blankets and things say to wash before use too. What about stuffed animals? Toys? How far am I supposed to go with this?? lol I feel like a germaphobe. I can't remember my mom ever washing a stuffed animal before giving it to us.
I never washed a stuffed animal, and I can't remember but I may have wiped down some toys in the beginning but I didn't go all crazy with it.

  • I never used the straps, because I never walked away

Like PPs, If it affected baby then pedi, if it was just me the OB.

I only sort of stocked up. I went with Pampers sensitive to start (seemed to be the safest) and then I alternated with swaddlers. But I did a small box of newborns and then a couple boxes of 1's and then one box of 2 and 3's to have. But I never needed to change brands and I used Amazon mom once I knew I would need more.

Be careful about washing carseat items, they are flame retardant and you can remove that protection, If you do wash the little shoulder pads with more than water you should request new ones from the manufacturer.

As for the weather covers, you can use any kind if you do not use the carrier in the car (ie a city family only using a stroller) but if you use the car, like PPS said it cannot go UNDER the baby and interfere with straps. You can avoid this by using the "shower cap" style ones. JJ Cole does have one, there is also the jolly jumper as well.   After market accessories and bulk jackets will void the car seat warranty, you could only use accessories made by the manufacturer for that particular seat.

Washing clothes. I admit after a few months I stopped when I realized DD wasn't sensitive.  I never washed a stuffed animal, I may consider if it was "used".

  • Car seat covers that either have elastic and go around the bucket or attach to the handle are great! Essentially like a blanket but they stay on and don't smother baby. But do not use a bundle me or any type that goes between baby and car seat.

I never used the straps on my changing pad.

  • Love this idea for a thread - I have one that I've been wanting to post but not wanting to make its own thread for.

I know I shouldn't use baby powder on the baby, but what about on me?  I usually put some under my boobs after my shower because I tend to get a rash if I don't - if I'm BF do I need to stop that or is it ok if I do it in another room from where the baby is?  Or do I need to ban the stuff from the house entirely?
  • @ceh789 re: baby powder- I think the problem is just if the baby breathes it in, and whether or not the powder is made from corn starch or talcum powder. FTM here, but I heard recently that corn starch is fine (and is what some baby powders are made of,) but talcum powder is bad to breathe in. I think it would be fine if you apply it far away from baby (it sounds like it doesn't go on your nipples, just under your boobs? I dont even know if it matters if it's ingested or just breathed in.) but if you want to be extra careful, use a corn-starch based powder, or even just try plain corn starch!
    imageimage
  • @laura8388 I hadn't either until DD was born. Apparently if they breath in talcum powder it can cause problems.

Back to sleep is what we are told here and we do tummy time during the day, even laying baby on your chest helps.

Desitin is popular here but we also used Beaudreux's (spelling?) Butt Paste is pretty good. You can use something like vaseline or Aquaphor to prevent diaper rash. I know DD got a diaper rash from any kind of wipe besides a Pampers Sensitive.

  • @laura8388 I wonder if its different since they have regular monitoring? We do back to sleep and then tummy time during the day.

We used the same butt paste @berry30 said when the rashes get bad. Otherwise I use a more natural one for little ones because we cd.

For diaper cream I know you want to use (generally) something with zinc only when they actually have a rash because it's more chemicals than they need on their skin for a preventative.  I like aquaphor for prevention and BTW that's one of a very few products I don't buy in a generic - I find the the store brands are terrible to squeeze out and much too thick to easily spread.

@lalaith50 the ingestion is mostly what I'm concerned about  - not that I use mountains of the stuff or anything but it is in an area the baby will be, she'll likely get some on her hands etc.  I know @babycaps had strong opinions about the baby powder question - maybe she knows for sure?

Also, I'm another one who doesn't know if I'm having BH or not - I always tell the OB that I'm not sure and feel like an idiot :)

  • I didn't read all of the responses, but the straps can be a life saver when your LO gets to the stage where they want to flip over and crawl off the end of the changing table or constantly sit up. DS will be 13 months next week and changing diapers now can be a huge battle. I have definitely used those straps recently!

Your OB will treat things like mastitis and you can go to them if you have thrush or anything else related to having a baby. You can see your child's pedi if they have thrush. If you aren't sure on a specific ailment down the road, just call your OB and check.

As for diapers, we didn't stock up ahead of time, we just used all the ones we had gotten from our showers and then after finding what worked best, week we what to buy later on. You can always return/ exchange kinds that don't work for your LO.

We are getting this to use when he's really little...considering it's made by the carseat manufacturer & safety tested, I assume you aren't referring to this type of thing?
Well I guess as long as it's approved by the manufacturer it's OK. I still don't think it's really necessary but that's a different question :)

  • I know this is kind of being discussed in another thread, but how many newborn or 0-3 outfits should I have off the bat?  SHould I have onesies, or sleepers (sleepers are I'm assuming the snap up outfits with feet), or both?  For whatever reason, most of the clothes we've been given were 3-6 months.  I've been buying some 0-3 stuff here and there, but now I'm terrified I don't have enough.

Also, what do I need on the changing table?  Just wipes and diapers?  Does anything else need to be on hand?  I know baby powder is a no no.

  • Ours came with some short straps (like 3 inches long) and instructions to screw those straps into the back of the dresser. I've also heard of people putting a no-slip mat underneath or building a rail of some kind. Someone I know glued painted alphabet blocks to the top to keep it in place.

Yeah, ours came with hardware to attach it to the dresser.  We only attached it to the back because I didn't want to put a hole in the front, and we haven't had any problems with it moving.

Also I have another: I don't want to create a BF thread out of... Fear. What foods did you STMS find you had to avoid while BFing? As I am pumping, we have a bunch of milk in the fridge, so it could be four day old milk that he is getting, and if he gets a bum rash I have forgotten what I are that day. I had kiwi fruit the first few days and he had a rash then so I stopped eating it, don't want to try them again as it was probably from them. But what are other common foods you had to avoid? Or could it be anything, and totally random foods?
I never had to avoid anything. I think it is totally random and not the same for everyone.

  • I started with about 15 outfits. It was summer so I used onesies, and they made for easier diaper changes than sleepers and all their damn buttons. Zippered sleepers are nice except that you have to open them up from the top in order to access the diaper.

Wipes and diapers on the changing table, and butt cream within reach somewhere. Hand sanitizer is nice to have within reach too.

I only used diaper cream when necessary. The faster the diaper change, the better.

This. I never had to avoid anything either.

As for clothing @AriaAmante143 I think it's personal preference. We didn't do sleepers during the day. I hated messing with them during diaper changes. We used onesies with pants or baby legs a lot during the day.

My friend had a preemie baby and they told her that if you put stuffed animals (which everyone kept giving her for his nicu time) in the freezer, it'll sanitize them. Here's what a quick google search brought up: https://mom.me/home/5997-how-sanitize-stuffed-toys/
hm. Assuming they're new, I would be more worried about the chemicals on stuffed animals and clothes than about germs or being sanitized. So I'm washing clothes, but not worrying about it for stuffed animals.

  • @Laura8388 I know some of my friends had problems with chocolate (cocoa) and diary products. I was looking at one of the "natural" nipple creams, but some moms warned against it because it had cocoa butter in it, which caused gas for their newborns after breastfeeding.

  • Thanks ladies for the stuffed animal responses! I was definitely thinking about the chemicals and dyes in case LO wants to put them in his mouth. Ick.

Will I know right away if LO is allergic to my cat?...lol
I don't know for sure but most pet allergies are hereditary so if you and baby's dad aren't allergic it's fairly unlikely that baby will be.  Also, if you do have allergies throw those stuffed animals away!  Those things are horrific allergen farms, I can't have them in the house at all.
  • So...I don't get the nipple cream thing do you put it in all time even if baby is feeding or then do you wipe it off? Also, when your water breaks how do you know besides a gush, I am constantly wet sticky, so moisture isn't new for me, but since we all have this as a symptom how do,you know the difference?

This reminded me of a dumb question - it seems like most people put baby in a onesie then a sleeper - do you really need both?  Why is the onesie part of like every baby outfit you ever see?

Re: what to have on changing table - in the beginning you definitely want some rubbing alcohol pads or cotton balls with rubbing alcohol on them to clean the umbilical cord site.  The changing table is also a good place to stash your rectal thermometer, and you'll want to have at least one back up change of clothing within arms reach in case the diaper change turns into a full outfit change.
  • @Laura8388, I believe @babycaps posted a really good explanation one day about the benefits of preemies being on their bellies, even though most advice is for infants to be put to sleep on their back.

For nipple cream usage, it kind of depends on what kind you have. Before using any you can try expressing a little bit of breast milk, rubbing that over the nipple area and letting it dry. For some women that is enough to help heal and protect. Other ointments or creams that I've seen are applied when you finish nursing. I used lanolin with DS and later had to use a prescription antibiotic ointment and I don't believe I had to wipe it off before nursing again. Check the packages and with LC's.

  • Haha yes, you really should have a rectal thermometer, and some dedicated Vaseline for it because... Rectal ;). If baby has a fever and you call the pedi they'll want a rectal temp, in my experience.  I like this one because it has a short probe so you really can't push it in too far on accident: https://www.amazon.com/Vicks-V934-Baby-Rectal-Thermometer/dp/B0002AHVZU/ref=br_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&colid=2OHUT5IOAPJFD&coliid=I3LLIMXWGIAAUN
