Yup. Just like northerners are whiny bitches who can't handle 90 degree weather ;)

Ice is difficult to drive on, there is no denying that, but I don't think anyone is saying that the main reason everything shut down is because people in Atlanta can't drive. It was because of bad decision making on the part of the mayor's office/GDOT/whoever makes those kind of calls and surrounding suburbs mixed with an incredible amount of people hitting the roads right as the conditions got really bad...
Agreed, but I stand by my think for yourself a little bit comment.  @kdsmith43 our weather forecasters aren't great, but I know the highways between my house and my work and I have called before when we had bad weather coming and he has allowed me to WFH because my life is more important than filling a chair.  I just think people need to think for themselves a little bit and realize that there may not be somebody to blame, it was a series of bad decisions, not enough equipment, etc. that caused this issue.

I don't think should just get over it either because it was clearly traumatic for everyone involved.  I guess I just don't see what blaming someone else is going to achieve?  The mayor doesn't get re-elected, they buy another 50 snow plows for the next winter storm 5 years from now?  What is really going to be achieved by pointing fingers?

  • My UO is that I think it is really silly how people in Atlanta are getting up in arms over what happened during their winter storm.  They want to know why and how their roads got so congested?  Well, I could tell you, but I don't think you really want to know the truth.

the truth is that the city/state was completely unprepared. Because, well, it's unrealistic for them to be completely prepared for something like that.

    STUCK

Yeah, when you have hardly any plows and salt trucks to prepare, 2 in of snow and ice become a big deal. It wasn't even really the snow that was the problem, it was the ice. Atlanta is mostly hills and bridges, so no matter how slow you go, you're going to start sliding. Driving on ice is pretty much a no brainer, but when nothing been done to the roads, there's not much you can do to stop sliding. Just one or two cars crashing or an 18-wheeler jack-knifing can block a whole road. When we had ice last week tow trucks weren't even going out to clear the cars because of the road conditions, so that just added to the traffic mess. When cities don't get much winter weather, there's no reason to keep a fleet of salt trucks at the ready.

But you're right. All southerners are just idiots who don't know how to drive and can't handle cold weather. *eyeroll*

@sharkfarts I didn't say that.  But the last time I checked most people could check weather for themselves.  So if it was going to be as bad as they say they predicted, then maybe you call in to work and say you aren't comfortable with driving.  The part I find silly is blaming the government completely and totally.  I have read numerous articles where people say, "well the government didn't cancel schools and didn't tell us to close our businesses."  Well, maybe you need to make that decision for yourself.

FTR, I grew up in TX and consider myself a southerner living in KS.  I don't think southerners are dumb, I just think it was a bad situation.  There doesn't
necessarily need to be someone to blame!

Only this far, but from what I saw on the news this morning that was the problem...the meteorologists didn't predict it and when they finally did (at like 9 am) kids were ready in school and people on their way to work.

I don't know for sure, obviously because I wasn't there, but the article I just read said that a winter storm warning was issued for Atlanta metro and surrounding areas at 3:30 am on Tuesday.  Whether is started at that moment or was set to begin later in the day, I don't know.

  • Snow is pretty and I wish I lived farther north so I could get more of it. I want all of the snow.
We have so much snow here. Our snow banks are so giant that I can't see the end of my street because it's blocked by piles of snow. The last week my H has been able to get to work but his co-workers have literally been stranded because they have closed all major highways due to drifts. It's pretty but snow can also be an asshole. But, I do like winter, so there's that.

I think entirely too many people have blogs, and many of them don't have much of interest to share, let alone good writing skills to make it an enjoyable read.
I started a new blog to deal with DH's stuff and maybe it will help someone someday who is in the same position.  I don't have a lot of interesting stuff to say but it helps when I am tired, upset or frustrated.

I think there's a difference between starting a blog for yourself and starting a blog in hopes of attracting a large audience and building ad revenue.
And then there are those blogs where "homegirl" and "ahem" and "monster baby" and "NBD" are used 800 times per post and it just becomes the same thing over and over. That's what has frustrated me lately with Jenni's blog. I'm like where is the substance? People are paying to advertise here!
I guess I need to just get over it because it's not my blog, so it's not really my business. And I can stop reading if I want.
Disclaimer: This isn't meant to be a personal attack on Jenni. She's doing her thang and obviously people like it.

  • Also- Nobody really had any fucking clue what the storm was going to do. We weren't supposed to get anything and then we were told we could get a bunch. And then it changed 4 more times.

The moral of the story here is: Don't live in Georgia.
This (minus the living in Georiga part).

And also, I don't know how people down there deal with weather. It's easy for people in the north to say, just look at the forecast, know it's going to snow and then make a call, but people in the south aren't used to having to deal with possibility of snow and inclimate weather every single day like we do...I can easily see how someone would get in there car and go to work not knowing there was going to be bad weather, especially when local news is not reporting it.

I guess this kind of blog, for me, would just be a journal, and I'd probably keep it private.

    Closer to online diary.

  • Regarding toddler beds...

I'm considering it for Hannah.  Mostly because I feel like she's at an age where she is completely exhausted when we put her down.  The girl literally passes out within minutes.  It seems like it might be easier to approach this transition now, than when she's 3, and more aware of "omg I can get out of bed and do all the things."

I see your logic, but when they get older, you can reason with them. "Tessa, you need to stay in bed until it's light outside. If you wake up and are scared, you can come to my room and I'll help you get back to sleep. Otherwise, stay in bed and here's your seahorse."
But if they can't reach the doorknob, do you have to reason with them?  I kid...

    Sort of.

I must have missed that one.  I did my good dead this week and informed a pediatric nurse about ERF, in a kind way of course.  Then all sorts of her friends came out the woodwork, oh yeah, you need to RF as long as possible....

I didn't actually notice it until now. But I have to say, we have that seat in my parents' car and it looks really reclined for FF. Maybe it's the angle. I don't agree with FF at this age but I'm tired of trying to tell people it's not safe, so I don't bother.

  • I don't get all that upset by FF babies now. Vader is still rear facing, but he has no trouble RF, so I haven't even really thought about it.
RF with Hannah is miserable.  She hates the car, which I'm sure could be fixed could she see what was going on.  I still RF though.

You aren't the only one in this position! Our kid hates the car. I don't think RF or FF would make a difference. TV seems to help a little. But she just gets squirmy and bored and then loses it.

Just saw it.  Yeah I wondered how the picture was taken.

My coworker has his DD FF in a seat that I am pretty positive our LO's aren't ready for.  It isn't the convertible carseat...  Anyway, she is exactly 2 weeks older than my LO.

  • I think there was more than one picture with a FF s12 baby this week. Unless someone was taking some crazy weird pictures in the car.
  • I guess my UO is that I don't care about FF/RF for other people's kids anymore.  Why bother?

and I think it's crappy to bring the S12 FB picture here. ETA: discussion about it.

How is it different than talking about s2bha's IG?
    Her IG wasn't private.
Her IG wasn't private because she allowed members of s12 to follow her.  The Facebook group is not 'public' but it's not private either because she's sharing that information with the members of the FB/TB group.  I didn't mention her name, so someone who wasn't part of the group can't go find the picture.

Right, and I understand that. And I have had the ERF conversation with actual friends.  I see nothing wrong with that.

Calling out something that was posted in a private fb group on here? crappy. It was for the purpose of shaming, not educating.

How did we educate s2bha?  I'm sorry, but I see no difference in referencing an IG account versus a FB group post.  And what about #selflove?  And #babypeen?
