Cribs

I looked for a post on those, because I could've sworn there was one already, but couldn't find it!  What kind of crib did/are you buying?  I find the whole thing overwhelming because almost all of them have mixed reviews!  What about crib mattresses?  Any specific brand you went with?

Re: Cribs

  • We are buying the Jenny Lind crib this go round, but we had the Davinci Emily 3-in-1 for DD2, which was also great.

I just bought a Serta (or maybe Sealy) firm mattress from Target.

  • We bought the Graco Lauren Crib it has held up really well and is a convertible. It lasted through DS who is an acrobat and 3 moves one of those being across several states.

  • We have Baby's Dream Cocoon. It's a convertible one. DS will be moving into a big boy's room. ILs are getting him the bed and dresser. That was part of his Xmas gift.

  • I just started researching this - if you haven't picked up a copy of Baby Bargains - do it! As a FTM, this has been extremely helpful. We haven't bought yet, but as of now, I'm in between the Babyletto Hudson and the Baby Cache Metro folding crib. Pics are below - we like modern.

  • We bought the Jenny Lind Davinci crib in white with an organic Colgate foam mattress. Did not want a convertible crib bc my dad has the toddler bed already made :)
I liked that it is solid wood no particle board (no glue) with a metal base and water based paint. Plus it's cute!
The mattress is great, its dual sided (meh) but right out of the box no fumes! Very important to me....

We got an ikea Gulliver. It is basic, affordable, and rated well in Baby Bargains book. I'm only 5ft tall so I need a shorter crib to reach down into, this is the best I've found for doing that. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80248525/

For the mattress, we splurged and got a Dax Stores organic crib mattress. It is organic cotton and wool, and we went with the upgraded pillar supports in it, it was around $270. That is actually one of the better prices for a natural/organic option.https://www.daxstores.com/v-snq-crib.html

  • For DS we bought a Graco Stanton convertible crib (It was $140 when we bought it) and a $36 Safety 1st mattress. We're very happy with both. The crib is safe and sturdy and DS sleeps well on the mattress.

For this one we're going with one of these $89 convertible cribs (this or this) and probably the same mattress DS has.

  • I was lucky enough to score a clearance crib from bru so we have the baby cache sleigh in espresso. Retail $300+ got it for the clearance of $50 something. Seems extremely sturdy so I'm happy with it. Our mattress is our toddlers old mattress :)

  • I've finally decided on the Boori Eton crib and Naturepedic lightweight mattress. The greenguard cert was important to us in choosing a crib.
  • I bought one from Amish Country. It was pricey but converts to a toddler bed then a full bed so we felt it was worth it to not need to buy anything else for him. We will probably do the same this time, I'm just debating on which style I want to go with.

We have the Childcraft Hawthorne crib which we will be reusing. Our mattress is off amazon, it was about $30? We'll be reusing that as well and buying Beb a slightly nicer one for her toddler bed.

  • We are reusing our crib from DS. It was a Delta convertible from Target. Worked out great with him though it does have a few teeth marks :)

  • Graco Lauren. We had the same for DS and it has held up well (except for where he chewed it ::head desk::) He is still in a crib so we just got another Lauren from the BRU sale so it would match the changing table.

  • We got our crib a few years ago- which means its no longer in production. But I do love it. It's a Baby's Dream Crib to College. Sleigh crib in white that converts to toddler bed and a platform sleigh style twin. It's super super cute. It also has a drop rail- not a drop side- but a partial rail along the top that can be folded down to make it easier to reach down into the lowest position.

    Love love love.

Anyway- going to again recommend Baby bargains. It's very helpful when your sifting through hundreds of options and mixed opinions.

We are getting this crib too but in grey. We love it!

  • FYI reusing crib mattresses is not suggested due to potential increased risk of SIDS. Something about mold spores from previous baby using it (moisture). I don't have the link right now but but will post if I can find it.

  • @goodgalpal

I wonder if there is any info on a crib mattress that has never been stored. DD is only 14 months and is still using her crib mattress. We were thinking of giving it to baby and getting her something a little softer/nicer to use for the next couple years. If the baby wasn't using it she would be, but nothing scares me more than SIDS.

  • We're getting the Shermag Preston crib from Babies R Us. I thought I wanted one style, but then when we went to look at them in person I fell in love with the style of the Preston, so we are getting that one. My parents are buying it for us, my mom is very excited to go with me and buy it. She bought my sisters' twins cribs so she is very insistent she buy ours too.

As far as the review go, I find a lot of the ratings/reviews of furniture are biased because a lot of the reviews are complaints about damage or lateness due to the delivery of an item, and to me, that is not a reflection of the item itself, it's a review of the delivery company. We're going to the store and buying the crib in person to avoid the shipping/potential damage headache with having to return it because it was damaged in shipping something.

For the mattress I ordered the Safety 1st Grow with Me Infant to Toddler Mattress from Costco last week. I got a crazy good deal on it, and I read in the reviews that is slightly wider than most crib mattresses so there is absolutely no gaps between a crib frame and mattress, which people seem to like for safety reasons. Doing research on mattresses was super overwhelming, so I wanted to get my mattress from Costco because they have a GREAT return policy in case something goes wrong with it.

  • Interesting. Thanks for the info. I always knew it was a no no to reuse crib mattresses but I assumed it had to due with storage. I will probably just order a new mattress for both kids!

  • Some people hand down their used crib mattresses to their dogs as a "new" bed. I can see myself doing something like that. :)

  • We actually aren't buying one this time. We got a convertible crib off Craigslist, the exact one we wanted (sold at Burlington, BRU, & buy buy baby all under different names). It's got the changer attached. Baby will be in the arm's reach co-sleeper or our bed until probably 6 months. DD didn't go into her room until freaking 8 months due to reflux issues. Honestly the cribs are all the same safety standards, all are pretty much a bitch to put together lol, pick whatever style you like. I just upgraded DD's mattress to a nook pebble lite. She got spoiled on our tempur pedic lol

  • We ordered the Boori Newport crib and pebble mattress. We wanted something low VOC etc, so green guard certification was important in our choice. The pebble mattress is also good. No plastic, breathable material and so on. We used the same mattress for DS.

The pebble mattress was really neat. You have me second guessing now lol. We also liked the Newport. That was our second choice. Boori has beautiful cribs and I love the greenguard cert.
  • We are going with the Romina Venice crib in vintage grey, I fell in love with it. As for mattresses, the Moonlight Slumber starlight support supreme has come highly recommended. :-)

  • I love the look of so many other cribs but I think we are also going with the gulliver from IKEA. We aren't a very tall family. I don't mind the height which is what most complain about. I haven't seen it in person so manybe I'll change my mind later. I really like some of the others I've seen posted here too.

Gah, so many choices. Why can't it be more like the Sims where there's only like 3 options tops?

  • We got the Heritage Convertable in expresso. I love love love it.
It's already been delivered and assembled, and the only issue I've had was with UX Assembly scratching it. So it's a great crib, just be careful who delivers and/or assembles your crib if it's not yourself.
As for the mattress, I have no idea yet haha

I was gifted a Delta Silverton.  It wasn't even on my radar for a brand of cribs, but I love it.  It's considered a 4 in 1.  I would definitely buy it again.
Do you feel like it's pretty sturdy? Saw a Delta I loved in the store, but Baby Bargains gave Delta a B-. Like hearing it's getting good ratings from the board!
