STM+ pre- pregnancy weight differences

Okay I'm extremely curious if anyone has had a huge weight difference between one child to the next and the result in the babies birth weight. Pretty sure I'm domed either way, but figured I'd ask haha.

Little insight, my first son was 9.7lb 21.5". Gave birth at 40.4 naturally with some drugs haha. Now with this baby my pre-pregnancy weight is almost 30lb less. My mother in law had alllll big babies all 9+ (5 total), and my mom a range (9,10,8 in that order). Did anyone have bigger babies, smaller babies etc?

Re: STM+ pre- pregnancy weight differences

  • My moms in order - 8lbs, 8lbs 8oz, 9lbs 5 oz, and twins born around 36 weeks 6lbs 4oz, 5lbs 12oz. So I guess hers continually got larger, but she also claims(blames) she kept 20lbs from each pregnancy. With my brother's, the twins, she also had GD and a bout of bells palsy(sp?). She was 24 when I was born, 31, 33, and 36 for the others.

I was 22 when DD was born, there is maybe a 5 lb difference between my weight when she was conceived and when this one was, but I've put on more with this one already. DD was 8lbs 1oz at 38w2d. DD2 will be delivered at 39w unless she decides otherwise, and I assume she will be larger.

  • I'm more so wondering like the difference of moms weight and babies birth weight. I'm assuming bigger just like they always say, but in wondering if anyone's had anything different. (If that makes sense). Being such a smaller size that I am now compared to before in wondering if I'm doomed with a 10lber even still lol!!

  • I was 167 when DS conceived, 214 day I had csection at 39.1, he was 11 lbs 11 oz, 20.5". I started out at 183 this time, and haven't gained anything so far at 20 weeks. Hoping this baby is slightly smaller than DS :/ had GD with DS, but he was fine at birth no sugar issues for either of us, I've been on a GD diet since 7 weeks this time.

DS was a 9 pounder and I was not in shape or at a desirable weight...but still not the biggest I let myself get to...before and while pregnwnt with DD#1 I gained a ton of weight and topped over 200 (not my best years)...DD#1 was 8 lbs 12 oz...now after I had DD...I decided to get myself healthier and dropped 30ish pounds before conceiving again and DD #2 was so much tinier compared to her siblings coming in at barely 7 pounds. Now before conceiving this one I got down to a size I had not been since high school...total weight loss of 65 pounds since pregnant with our first DD...so I'm curious if this baby will be smaller as well...or of DD#2s size was a fluke and not related to being healthier and at a better weight...I get what you are saying and have had the same thoughts...especially with this pregnancy. I should add I went to 41 weekswith all of them...first two induced and DD #2 water broke.

I think genetics plays a fairly large role, but as for mothers size, I'm not sure there is a correlation. Like I said, my moms kept getting larger, even the twins were a combined 12lbs of baby. And she too was larger each time. But then again your uterus may be less "limiting" after your first, and a smaller first does seem common. Either way, good luck!

  • With DS, I lost 10 pounds prior to getting pregnant. I gained 24 pounds (+14), he weighed under 6. I have gained about 10-12 pounds so far.

  • I gained 50 pounds with DD1 and she was 38w5d weighing in at 6lbs 3 oz. DD2 I gained 20 pounds and she weighed 7lbs 11oz when she was born at 39 weeks. So I guess for me my weight gain does not affect the baby size, but my babies did get bigger. This time I am expecting a boy and am much smaller than with my girls a this time so we shall see.
  • I think if you are going to have a big baby, you are just doomed:-). My mom weighed 100lbs prepregnancy and we were all between 9lbs12oz and 10lbs 8oz. No GD. I think we were all born at about 41 weeks.

I weigh much more than 100lbs, but my son was 9lbs 5oz at 39 weeks, and I'm thinking this one might be bigger because I've heard that a woman's subsequent babies tend to get larger, and that's what happened to my mom.

I was around 150  (I'm 5'8") when I got pregnant with DD.  Gained 55lbs.  She was 7lbs 15oz at birth.

My mom birthed two 8lbs 8oz babies - she is 5'3" and was maybe 120ish when she got pregnant with her first.  And she gained 20lbs more with her first (60lbs) than with her second.  And her first was two weeks late, second was 10 days early.

I was around 160 when I got pregnant this time.  So far, gained almost 15lbs already.  We'll see how much baby weighs.

  • Yeah with my son I gained a grand total of 40lbd almost this one I haven't hit the 10 mark yet, which with my son I was well over. I'm also still working out with this one where as with my first son I never worked out prior. I also eat A LOT better and healthier than I did prior and with my son so who knows!!

  • @divine0chaos size of baby has little to do with whether you'll tear or whether baby will have shoulder dystocia (aka get stuck). DD was only 7lbs 13oz & I had a 3rd degree tear.

  • I am on the smaller side as far as BMI and my DS was 8 lbs 7 oz born 38 weeks. I gained 32 lbs during pregnancy. I'm not sure if starting off bigger or smaller will have any bearing on birthweight unless gestational diabetes was an issue the first time.
  • With DD I gained 20lbs and she was born 2 1/2 weeks early at 5lbs 110zs. This time, I'm "supposed" to try to gain 30 - so speaketh my OB. I've gained 7 so far, so hopefully I can keep it going and this one will have a healthier birth weight.

This.  My son was 8lbs 4 oz and I had a 3rd, almost 4th degree tear.  Or per the OB sewing me up, "Oh look!  You almost ripped right through your rectum!"  I healed up just fine though.

And then you have my friend who pushed out an 11lb baby with not even a tiny tear. It really has no bearing on whether you'll tear, especially if you're able to control your pushing, no "purple pushing".

This article does say that larger babies have an increased risk of shoulder dystocia. It also says that baby's size is related to maternal pre-pregnancy weight & weight gain during pregnancy, to OP's original question. Although I'm not sure how much difference a 30lb weight loss would make...Good luck OP! If your first was a big baby, you have a good chance of delivering another big baby with no problems!
  • Yeah I only had to push for 30 min so hopefully this one goes as smoothly.

  • My Dr  told me that we take after what our moms had (but either way, you're having big babies!).

I am 20 lbs heavier this time.  M was 7lbs7oz at 38w6d and he was sunny side up so I tore pretty badly.  I'm hoping this one goes better.
